Freedom Mobile’s May 23, 2025 announcement introduced a $65-per-month plan with 150GB of data and restored a $4 monthly bring-your-own-phone (BYOP) credit on selected plans. That offer is no longer current in its original form. Freedom reduced the credit to $3 in June 2025, and later reporting said the BYOP discount ended for new customers and customers changing plans in March 2026.
This is therefore a historical deal report with a current-status update—not a claim that new customers can still receive the original $4 discount.
What Freedom Mobile changed in May 2025
On May 23, 2025, MobileSyrup reported two major changes to Freedom Mobile’s monthly lineup: a recurring $4-per-month BYOP credit returned on selected plans, and Freedom added a new $65-per-month plan with 150GB of data. The reported prices generally reflected Freedom’s advertised monthly pricing and may have involved Auto Pay or other plan-specific pricing conventions, so they should not be treated as identical to today’s live prices.

The table below separates the plans reported as receiving the BYOP credit from the other lineup changes. A BYOP-adjusted price is not necessarily the plan’s standalone base price: advertised prices could also reflect Auto Pay or other conditions.

The broader reported lineup also included $25/3GB, $34/10GB plus 1GB of Roam Beyond data, $40/100GB Canada-wide, and $50/125GB Canada-wide plans.
What the $65/150GB plan included
The new plan was reported at $65 per month for 150GB, with 30GB of Roam Beyond data. The 150GB headline should not be confused with the separate Roam Beyond allowance. Freedom distinguishes between a plan’s ordinary domestic or North American data and data usable under Roam Beyond terms.

The latter was described with an explicit Canada/U.S./Mexico footprint and was reported as eligible for the BYOP credit. The available reporting does not justify assuming that the $65 plan automatically became $61 through BYOP or had precisely the same geographic terms as the $69 plan.

What BYOP meant
BYOP means using your own phone instead of financing one through Freedom. Freedom’s BYOD information says the device must be compatible with its network and completely unlocked. BYOP pathways are available for both postpaid and prepaid service, although postpaid service can involve account and credit requirements. Freedom describes prepaid service as having no credit check and no contract.
- Confirm that the phone is fully unlocked and paid off.
- Check the device against Freedom’s compatibility requirements.
- Verify whether it supports a physical SIM or eSIM, as appropriate.
- Confirm the required LTE and 5G bands and features.
- Choose between Canada-only and Canada/U.S./Mexico service based on actual travel needs.
- Review the checkout summary to identify the plan price, Auto Pay discount, BYOD credit, taxes, and any other promotion separately.
- Keep the old account active until number porting is complete.

Canada-only, North American, and Roam Beyond data are different
A large data number does not by itself describe where that data works. Before comparing plans, check three separate questions:
- Where does the core data work? Some plans are Canada-only, while others include Canada/U.S./Mexico access.
- How much Roam Beyond data is included? Roam Beyond data is a separate roaming allowance and should not be added casually to the plan’s main data total.
- What happens after the full-speed allowance? “Unlimited” plans can continue at reduced speeds after the high-speed allotment is used.
Freedom’s published BYOD information lists reduced speeds of up to 256 Kbps download and 128 Kbps upload on the Freedom Network, and up to 128 Kbps download and 64 Kbps upload on partner networks in Nationwide, the U.S., and Mexico. Basic messaging and light browsing may remain possible, but video streaming, large downloads, hotspot use, and app updates can become impractical.

Important trade-offs in the 2025 changes
The 150GB Canada-only plan became more expensive for some users
The reported removal of the $60/150GB Canada-wide plan and its replacement with a $69/150GB Canada/U.S./Mexico plan gave customers broader North American usage but raised the advertised price. Someone who rarely travels outside Canada may not value the added U.S. and Mexico access enough to justify the difference.
The cheapest reported option rose from $19 to $25
The reported replacement of the $19/1GB plan with a $25/3GB plan provided more data but increased the entry price by $6 per month. That was potentially worse for customers who mainly needed calling and texting and used very little data. These postpaid monthly plans should not be confused with prepaid annual options.
BYOP was not available on every plan
The reported $4 credit applied to selected plans, not the entire lineup. In particular, the existence of a $65/150GB plan did not establish that its price could automatically be reduced to $61. Customers needed to check the plan-specific eligibility rules and final checkout price.
What happened after the announcement?
June 12, 2025: the credit fell to $3
MobileSyrup later reported that Freedom reduced the BYOP credit from $4 to $3 per month on June 12, 2025. The reported affected prices included $36/60GB, $46/80GB, $56/100GB, and $66/150GB Canada/U.S./Mexico. The report also noted that Freedom’s website initially contained outdated $4 wording before being updated.

March 2026: the discount reportedly ended for new signups and plan changes
In March 2026, MobileSyrup reported that Freedom ended the BYOP discount for new customers and customers changing plans. Existing customers could reportedly retain the discount while remaining on eligible plans. The same report described affected prices rising by approximately $10 per month, including $50/100GB formerly at $40, $60/150GB formerly at $50, $70/200GB formerly at $60, and $80/250GB formerly at $70.
That distinction matters: changing plans can remove a grandfathered credit even when the customer owns their phone.

Not in its original form, based on the later reporting and Freedom’s current published discount language. As of August 18, 2026, Freedom’s official BYOD page describes a separate $5-per-month Digital Discount. It requires an eligible prepaid or postpaid plan, Auto Pay, a valid payment method, and redemption of the “Digital Discount” promo code in a Freedom store or through My Account.
The current Digital Discount should not be described as a continuation of the historical $4 BYOP credit. Promotional terms can change, and Freedom’s live checkout flow is the final authority for a new customer’s exact price. Check the Freedom plan shop and the current BYOD terms before switching.

Who would have benefited from the historical offer?
The 2025 offer was most attractive to someone who already owned a compatible unlocked phone, used substantial data, travelled between Canada and the United States or Mexico, valued included Roam Beyond data, and did not need device financing.
It was less attractive to a light-data user, someone with weak Freedom coverage at home or work, someone who wanted a subsidized handset, or an existing customer who would lose a grandfathered price or credit by changing plans.

Device financing can make sense when replacing a phone immediately, but the total cost is not just the advertised wireless rate. Review the remaining device balance, plan eligibility, TradeUp return conditions, and possible cancellation charges before changing plans.

Network and billing details to check
Freedom says 5G and 5G+ require a compatible device, compatible SIM, and coverage in a 5G or 5G+ area. Outside those areas, LTE may be used where available. Performance varies with location, device, congestion, environmental conditions, and whether the phone is using Freedom’s network or a partner network.
Advertised prices exclude applicable taxes and may not include regional charges such as Alberta’s 911 levy. A displayed price may already include Auto Pay, a Digital Discount, student pricing, a home-internet bundle credit, or an additional-line promotion. Ask Freedom to show each credit separately before accepting the final price.
What to verify before porting your number
- Current plan price and whether it is a temporary or ongoing promotion.
- Whether the offer is for a new customer, an existing customer, or only a customer staying on a legacy plan.
- Whether Auto Pay or a promo-code redemption is required.
- Whether Canada/U.S./Mexico access is included or whether the plan is Canada-only.
- The amount and destinations covered by Roam Beyond data.
- Full-speed data limits and reduced post-threshold speeds.
- Device compatibility, unlock status, SIM or eSIM support, and 5G requirements.
- Coverage at home, work, and regular travel locations.
- Taxes, levies, activation charges, and any bundle or additional-line conditions.
- Whether changing plans will remove a grandfathered credit, bonus data, or roaming benefit.
Do not cancel the old service before Freedom confirms that the number transfer has completed. Keep the final checkout screen, promotional terms, and first bill so you can compare the promised credits with the charges.
Bottom line
Freedom’s May 2025 announcement was notable because it combined a $65/150GB plan with a restored $4 BYOP credit on selected plans. But the credit was reduced to $3 within weeks and later reportedly ended for new customers and plan changes. In 2026, shoppers should compare Freedom’s live checkout price and current Digital Discount terms—not rely on the historical $4 figure or assume the $65 plan is still available on the same terms.
