Freedom Mobile says a third party accessed some customers’ personal information between January 12 and January 18, 2026, after using compromised credentials belonging to a subcontractor. The potentially accessed data included names, addresses, email addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers and Freedom account numbers. Freedom says passwords and payment information were not affected, and says customers included in this incident were contacted by email or text on March 18, 2026.
The incident creates a meaningful risk of targeted phishing and impersonation, but the available evidence does not establish that customers suffered account takeover, SIM swaps, identity theft or financial fraud.
What happened in the Freedom Mobile breach?
According to Freedom’s privacy notice, unauthorized activity affected its customer account-management platform from January 12 through January 18, 2026.
Freedom says a third party used compromised credentials belonging to a subcontractor. That description points to unauthorized access to an account-management system; it does not establish that the public website, mobile network or customers’ phones were compromised.

Freedom says it disabled the compromised third-party account, reviewed its third-party-access controls, monitored affected accounts for unusual activity and contacted impacted customers.
There is no evidence in the available notice that this was a ransomware attack, payment-card theft, SIM-swap attack or network outage.
What information may have been accessed?
Freedom says the potentially accessed information included:

Freedom specifically says payment information and passwords were not affected. That is important, but it does not mean the incident is risk-free. Names, addresses, birth dates, phone numbers and account numbers can help scammers create convincing messages or combine the information with data from other breaches.
Freedom’s notice does not identify call contents, text-message contents, location history, Social Insurance Numbers, credit-card numbers, banking information or account passwords as accessed. It also does not establish whether information was downloaded, copied, sold or published.

Freedom has not publicly disclosed how many customers were affected.
Is this the same as Freedom’s earlier breach?
There is no evidence currently establishing that the January 2026 incident was the same event as Freedom’s earlier breach. It is described as “another” breach because Freedom had disclosed a separate unauthorized-access incident involving its customer account-management platform in late 2025.

The available information does not establish that the same attacker, subcontractor, credentials, platform configuration or data set was involved in both incidents. The earlier timeline is documented in reporting compiled by CanadaBreaches.
How can you tell whether you were affected?
Freedom says the March 18 notice applies to customers who received a direct email or text from the company that day. It says customers who did not receive that notice were not included in this incident.
Still, the notice itself could be impersonated. Use this verification checklist:

- Do not rely only on the message’s links. Type Freedom Mobile’s website address manually or use a known bookmark.
- Compare the message with the information in Freedom’s official privacy notice.
- Contact Freedom through an independently verified customer-service channel if you are unsure.
- Preserve the original email or text if you may need it for a complaint or fraud report.
- Do not reply to the breach message unless Freedom’s official instructions specifically tell you to do so.
If you received a later message, verify whether it is a legitimate follow-up and whether it refers to the January incident or a different matter. Former customers should check the wording of the notice rather than assuming they were included or excluded.

What are the realistic risks?
The breach establishes unauthorized access to personal information. It does not establish that the information was misused.
The most credible risks are:
- Phishing messages using your name, address, phone number or account number.
- Someone impersonating Freedom Mobile or another service provider.
- Social-engineering attempts to obtain a password, account PIN, payment information or one-time verification code.
- Attempts to combine this information with data exposed in unrelated breaches.
- Account-takeover or identity-fraud attempts if additional information is obtained elsewhere.
These outcomes are different:
- Data exposure: Information was accessed without authorization.
- Account takeover: Someone gained control of a Freedom account.
- SIM swap or number porting: A phone number was transferred to another SIM or carrier.
- Identity theft: Exposed information was used to commit fraud.
The notice confirms the first category, not necessarily the others. Freedom says it has no indication the information has been misused and characterizes the risk of harm as low. That is Freedom’s assessment, not an independent regulatory finding.
What affected customers should do now
1. Treat follow-up messages as potential phishing
Freedom says it will not request credit-card numbers, banking information, passwords or PINs by email or SMS. Never give an unsolicited caller or message sender a one-time verification code. A caller knowing your address or account number does not prove that the caller is legitimate.
2. Secure reused passwords
Freedom says its passwords were not affected. You should nevertheless change any password reused on other services, especially email, banking, cloud storage and shopping accounts. Use unique passwords and a password manager where practical.

3. Strengthen high-value accounts
Enable multi-factor authentication on email, banking and other important accounts. Prefer an authenticator app or security key over SMS-based authentication when a service supports it.
4. Monitor financial and online accounts
Check bank, card, email and other account activity for changes you did not make. Review credit reports for unfamiliar inquiries or accounts if you are concerned about identity fraud. Customers at higher risk may ask their financial institutions and Canada’s major credit bureaus about additional verification or fraud-alert options.
5. Review Freedom account activity
Freedom says account verification is required for certain account actions. Its account-verification guidance explains the process. Contact Freedom through an independently verified channel if you notice an unexpected address change, account-access event, SIM-related change, number-porting attempt or sudden loss of cellular service.
A sudden loss of service should be treated as a possible account or SIM issue, but it does not prove that this breach caused a SIM swap.

If you see identity fraud or a credible fraud attempt, contact the affected financial institution or service provider. Contact local police where appropriate and report fraud to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. Keep copies of suspicious messages, phone numbers, dates and account activity.

What Freedom has not disclosed
The public information does not state:
- How many customers were affected.
- The identity or role of the subcontractor.
- Whether the same vendor or platform configuration was involved in the October 2025 incident.
- Whether law enforcement or privacy regulators were notified.
- Whether an independent forensic investigation occurred.
- Whether information was downloaded, copied, sold or published.
- The precise security controls added after the incident.
- That customers are entitled to compensation, credit monitoring or another remedy.
Those omissions do not by themselves prove wrongdoing. They identify the limits of what has been publicly established.
What does Canadian privacy law require?
Freedom’s privacy policy says its Canadian operations are governed by the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, or PIPEDA.
Under PIPEDA, organizations must report certain breaches to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and notify affected individuals when there is a real risk of significant harm. Organizations must also keep breach records and assess the risk. The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada provides guidance and findings concerning these obligations.

Freedom’s notice is the company’s account of the event, not an independent finding about the adequacy of its safeguards or the timing of its response.
Should you leave Freedom Mobile?
There is no universal answer. A carrier change may be reasonable if you have lost confidence in Freedom’s handling of third-party access, but switching does not erase information Freedom already holds or eliminate exposure from unrelated breaches.
Before switching, consider:
- Whether you were directly notified or have seen suspicious account activity.
- Freedom’s response and the account-security features available to you.
- Coverage, roaming, contract and device-financing consequences.
- How number porting will be verified and protected.
- Whether another carrier offers materially stronger controls for your needs.
Do not cancel service, replace your phone number or port your number as an automatic response to this notice. If you do switch, use independently verified channels and carefully protect the account-verification process.
Bottom line
Freedom Mobile says a subcontractor’s compromised credentials were used to access some customer information in January 2026. The exposed categories are enough to make targeted phishing and impersonation a realistic concern, even though Freedom says passwords and payment information were not affected and has reported no misuse.

Check whether you received Freedom’s March 18 notice, verify communications independently, protect reused credentials, enable stronger authentication and monitor important accounts. Avoid assuming that the incident caused identity theft or a SIM swap—and avoid clicking links or sharing codes with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.
