Former U.S. Army soldier Cameron John Wagenius pleaded guilty on July 15, 2025, to participating in a hacking and extortion conspiracy that targeted telecommunications companies and other organizations. Prosecutors said the group stole business and customer records, threatened to publish or sell them, and attempted to extort at least $1 million.

The case involved telecom metadata and identifying information—not, based on the cited filings, confirmed recordings of calls or the contents of text messages. Wagenius had also pleaded guilty earlier in a separate case involving the unlawful transfer of confidential phone-record information.

What Cameron Wagenius pleaded guilty to

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Wagenius pleaded guilty in federal court in Washington to:

  • Conspiracy to commit wire fraud;
  • Extortion relating to computer fraud; and
  • Aggravated identity theft.

The charges covered a broader conspiracy that prosecutors said operated from approximately April 2023 through December 18, 2024. Wagenius was 21 when the plea was announced and used the online identity “kiberphant0m.”

He was described as a former soldier by the time of the July 2025 announcement, although prosecutors said some of the conduct occurred while he was serving on active duty. The case does not establish that he hacked Army systems or that the Army itself was a victim.

How the alleged hacking and extortion scheme worked

Prosecutors said Wagenius and co-conspirators used stolen credentials and other methods to access protected computer networks. They coordinated through Telegram group chats and cybercrime forums and used a tool they called “SSH Brute,” among other techniques.

After obtaining access, the group allegedly:

  1. Entered telecommunications and other protected networks using compromised credentials;
  2. Copied sensitive business, customer, and telecommunications records;
  3. Threatened to release or sell the information on forums including BreachForums and XSS.is;
  4. Sought ransom payments from data owners; and
  5. Sold or reused some stolen information in additional fraud, including SIM-swapping activity.

The DOJ said at least 10 victim organizations were targeted and that the conspirators attempted to extort at least $1 million in total. That figure describes the amount demanded or pursued—not necessarily money the group successfully collected.

The phrase “SSH Brute” should not be treated as the name of a standard commercial hacking product. The DOJ release identifies it as a tool the conspirators called “SSH Brute” but does not establish who created it or precisely how sophisticated it was.

The AT&T and Verizon connection

Earlier charges and reporting linked Wagenius to the theft or attempted distribution of phone-record information associated with AT&T and Verizon. Earlier coverage described those telecom-related allegations, while the later DOJ announcement used the broader description of a scheme involving telecommunications companies and at least 10 victim organizations.

It is therefore more precise to say that earlier charges and reporting connected Wagenius to AT&T- and Verizon-related records, rather than to state that the July plea announcement named every affected company or proved that every intrusion was carried out personally by Wagenius.

What kind of information was involved?

Court-related filings and reporting described confidential phone records, call-detail information, telecommunications identifying data, and personally identifiable information. The records reportedly included call and text-history information that could be matched with names associated with particular telephone numbers.

Call-detail records are metadata. They can show information such as the numbers involved, dates, times, and other routing or account details. They are different from the audio of a phone call or the words inside a text message. The cited materials describe phone records and related identifying information; they do not establish that Wagenius obtained recordings of calls or the contents of text messages.

That distinction matters financially and personally. Metadata can still reveal relationships, travel patterns, business contacts, family connections, emergency activity, or links to sensitive organizations. When combined with names and other personal information, it can also make phishing, impersonation, account takeover, and SIM-swapping attempts more convincing.

The separate confidential-phone-record case

The July 2025 plea was not the first guilty plea in the overall sequence of cases. In a separate Western District of Washington matter, Wagenius pleaded guilty to two counts involving the unlawful transfer of confidential phone-record information.

A guilty-plea filing and related court materials said investigators found copies of confidential phone records on his phone and laptop and alleged that records had been publicly posted or transferred. A detention memorandum said the records did not initially include customer names but were enriched with names connected to specific telephone numbers.

Prosecutors also described records that potentially involved senior public officials, their families, and other sensitive individuals. Those descriptions came from prosecution filings and should be understood as allegations or assertions in that proceeding unless independently established in a final judgment.

What was the Snowflake-related connection?

Security researchers and news reports linked the “kiberphant0m” identity to a wider hacking campaign involving credentials stolen from Snowflake customer environments. TechCrunch reported that connection in its coverage of the plea.

However, the DOJ’s July 2025 announcement focused on the telecom-extortion conspiracy and did not provide a complete technical account of every Snowflake-related intrusion. The Snowflake link is best presented as a reported investigative connection, not as a fully adjudicated finding that the plea established the entire wider campaign.

What prosecutors alleged about foreign contacts

Reporting based on court filings said Wagenius searched for ways to defect from the United States and tried to sell stolen information to an entity he believed was associated with a foreign intelligence service. Those details were reported by outlets including CyberScoop and KrebsOnSecurity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The available material does not establish that a foreign government bought the information, that Wagenius formally worked for an intelligence service, or exactly which records were offered. He was not charged with treason in the charges identified by the DOJ. Searches about defection or alleged attempts to contact a foreign service are not, by themselves, proof of espionage.

How investigators identified and prosecuted him

The investigation involved the FBI Cyber Division, the Defense Criminal Investigative Service, the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division, and federal prosecutors in the Western Districts of Washington and Texas. Cybersecurity firms Flashpoint and Unit 221B also assisted, according to the DOJ.

The public plea announcement does not disclose a complete forensic timeline showing precisely how investigators connected the “kiberphant0m” persona to Wagenius. It is therefore not possible to responsibly describe a specific de-anonymization technique from the cited sources.

Potential penalties and sentencing status

The DOJ said the July 2025 charges carried the following statutory exposure:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Charge Maximum or required penalty cited by DOJ
Conspiracy to commit wire fraud Up to 20 years in prison
Extortion relating to computer fraud Up to five years in prison
Aggravated identity theft A mandatory two-year sentence served consecutively to other prison terms

The DOJ announcement and the Western District of Washington release scheduled sentencing for October 6, 2025. The available dossier does not verify a final sentencing judgment as of August 18, 2026. No specific sentence should be reported without checking the later court docket or an official court or DOJ announcement.

What telecom customers should take from the case

This case illustrates why phone records and account identifiers deserve protection even when message content is not exposed. Criminals can combine telecom metadata with names, leaked credentials, public information, and social-engineering tactics to target financial accounts.

  • Use unique passwords and multi-factor authentication on email, banking, investment, and mobile-carrier accounts.
  • Prefer an authenticator app or security key over SMS-based authentication where available.
  • Set a carrier account PIN and ask the carrier about protections against unauthorized SIM transfers or number porting.
  • Monitor bank, credit-card, brokerage, and payment-app activity for unfamiliar logins, password resets, new payees, or transfer attempts.
  • Consider a credit freeze with the major credit bureaus if personal identifying information may have been exposed.
  • Treat unexpected calls or messages claiming to be from a bank, carrier, or government agency as potential phishing attempts. Contact the organization through an independently verified number.

The bottom line

Wagenius admitted participating in a telecom-focused hacking and extortion conspiracy, while the broader case also involved a separate guilty plea over confidential phone records. The confirmed legal record supports careful distinctions: prosecutors alleged attacks on at least 10 organizations and attempted extortion of at least $1 million; earlier reporting connected the defendant to AT&T- and Verizon-related records; and the cited filings describe telecom metadata and identifying information rather than confirmed call or text content.
