Former Avalara Executive Builds Legata Around Washington’s Estate-Planning Gap

Alesia Pinney, Avalara’s former chief legal officer and executive vice president, is building Legata, a Seattle-area legal-tech company designed for families that need more than a basic online will but may not need a traditional ultra-high-net-worth law firm. The startup was inspired in part by Washington’s estate tax, although the state’s temporary 35% top rate ended June 30, 2026. For deaths on or after July 1, 2026, Washington’s exclusion amount is $3 million and its top rate is 20%.

What Legata is trying to build

Legata is positioned as an estate-planning service rather than an estate-tax calculator or tax-preparation product. Its reported workflow helps customers organize family and asset information and create documents such as:

  • Wills
  • Trusts
  • Health-care directives
  • Powers of attorney

The company also describes ongoing plan management, document storage, reminders, and updates when laws change. That maintenance focus matters because an estate plan can become outdated after a marriage, divorce, birth, property purchase, business sale, or major change in tax law.

GeekWire reported an initial price of $1,495 for an estate plan plus $195 per year for ongoing updates, storage, and reminders. Those figures were reported in February 2026 and should be confirmed with Legata before enrollment.

Pinney has described the target market as households with approximately $1 million to $20 million in assets. That is the company’s positioning, not an independently validated market definition. The intended customer is someone whose financial life may involve a business, Washington real estate, multiple beneficiaries, or tax exposure, but who may not be seeking a highly customized private-client engagement.

Who is Alesia Pinney?

Pinney spent more than 12 years at Avalara, where she served as chief legal officer and executive vice president. She helped guide the tax-compliance software company through its initial public offering and its 2022 private-equity transaction, which was reported at $8.4 billion.

Her earlier career included work as a CPA at Deloitte and as a corporate attorney at Perkins Coie. That background gives her experience across tax, law, corporate transactions, and software-company operations. It also helps explain Legata’s approach: the company is attempting to apply software and workflow discipline to a legal process that is often fragmented between attorneys, tax professionals, financial advisers, and the clients themselves.

GeekWire reported that Henry Frantz, a former Avalara legal-operations manager, is also a Legata co-founder. Bryan Wiggins, a former Avalara vice president of marketing, was reported as the company’s chief marketing officer.

Why Washington’s estate tax created the opening

Washington imposes its own estate tax, separate from the federal estate tax. The rules can apply to a Washington resident’s estate and can also raise issues for a nonresident who owns Washington property or certain Washington-connected business interests.

The tax story that helped inspire Legata needs a date-specific explanation. For deaths between July 1, 2025, and June 30, 2026, Washington used a temporary graduated schedule with a maximum rate of 35%. That temporary schedule has ended.

For deaths on or after July 1, 2026, the Washington Department of Revenue lists a $3 million filing threshold and exclusion amount. The current schedule ranges from 10% to 20%, with the 20% rate applying to the portion of the taxable estate above $9 million. The current brackets are shown in the Department of Revenue’s estate-tax tables.

That does not mean every Washington household with $3 million in net worth owes estate tax. The filing threshold is based on the gross estate, and the final calculation depends on allowable deductions, ownership structure, marital status, business interests, property location, and other facts.

Gross estate is not the same as take-home wealth

The gross estate generally concerns the value of property owned or held in trust under the applicable rules, before the deductions used to calculate the taxable estate. A household could therefore need to examine more than bank-account balances. A home, investment accounts, life insurance, business interests, real estate, and trust-held assets may all require analysis.

Nonresidents can also face Washington questions when they own Washington real estate or other Washington-situs property. The details are fact-specific, and the Department of Revenue’s estate-tax FAQ and the governing Washington statute should not be replaced by a simplified online threshold test.

Washington also lists a maximum qualified family-owned business-interest deduction of $3,076,000 for 2026. That is a specialized deduction for qualifying interests, not a general exemption available to every business owner.

The broader planning problem

Pinney’s thesis is that many families sit between two imperfect options. A basic online document platform can be inexpensive and convenient, but may not address a closely held company, a blended family, multistate property, charitable planning, or state-specific estate-tax exposure. A traditional estate-planning firm can provide deeper advice, but may be more expensive or difficult to access.

Estate planning also does not end when documents are generated. A trust may need to be funded. Real estate may need to be retitled. Bank and brokerage accounts may need updated beneficiary designations. Business owners may need buy-sell agreements, succession planning, valuations, or liquidity arrangements.

Legata’s opportunity is therefore broader than helping customers produce legal forms. It is trying to make planning and maintenance more repeatable while retaining some level of legal review.

How Legata uses AI—and what remains unclear

According to the February 2026 GeekWire report, Legata uses AI internally to help draft and curate content, while customer-facing materials are reviewed by lawyers. Those descriptions should not automatically be read as equivalent to personalized legal advice or full attorney representation.

Prospective customers should determine:

  • Whether a lawyer reviews every plan or only selected documents.
  • Whether customers can ask individualized legal questions.
  • Whether the service creates an attorney-client relationship.
  • Whether a named attorney is responsible for the work.
  • Whether representation is available if a dispute later arises.

The available reporting does not establish the precise boundary between Legata’s AI-assisted intake, document production, lawyer review, and legal advice. That boundary is especially important because estate planning is governed largely by state law.

Regulatory status and service questions

GeekWire reported in February 2026 that Legata’s Washington legal-services model was under regulatory review. That is a time-sensitive company-status fact, not a finding that the service is invalid. It does mean customers should ask how the business is structured and who is legally responsible for the work.

Before signing up, ask:

  • Does Legata operate through a law firm, a legal-services entity, a technology platform, or a combination?
  • Which lawyers review documents, and in which states are they licensed?
  • How are attorney-client privilege and confidentiality handled?
  • Which states and types of property are supported?
  • What signing, witnessing, and notarization requirements apply?
  • What happens to stored documents if the subscription ends?

A digitally produced document is not necessarily an effective estate plan. The customer still may need to sign it correctly, have witnesses or a notary where required, fund a trust, record deeds, and update beneficiary forms.

Who may be a good fit?

Legata may appeal to a household seeking a guided digital process, lawyer-reviewed documents, and continuing reminders. It could be worth considering for a relatively organized family whose needs exceed a simple will but do not require extensive tax, business, or litigation advice.

A CPA or tax adviser can complement either approach by modeling estate-tax exposure, business valuation, liquidity, and tax-return requirements. A financial planner can help coordinate beneficiary designations, insurance, charitable giving, and investment liquidity. Neither professional necessarily substitutes for legal advice.

Questions to ask before buying any estate-planning service

  1. What is my actual exposure? Ask whether the analysis uses the gross estate and accounts for Washington property, trusts, business interests, and federal estate-tax issues.
  2. Who reviews the plan? Clarify whether review is performed by a licensed lawyer and whether individualized consultations are included.
  3. What implementation is included? Find out whether deeds, trust funding, beneficiary updates, and business documents are part of the quoted price or left to the customer.
  4. What happens after the first year? Confirm the annual subscription price, renewal terms, included updates, and review process.
  5. Does the plan match the family? A generic trust may be unsuitable for a blended family, a beneficiary with disabilities, or a business owner.
  6. How is data protected? Ask what personal, financial, family, and health information is collected, who can access it, whether it is deleted on request, and whether it is used to train AI models.

Legata compared with the alternatives

Option Potential strengths Potential limitations
Legata or a similar legal-tech service Guided workflow, digital convenience, ongoing reminders, and reported lawyer review Service boundaries, state coverage, implementation support, and regulatory structure must be confirmed
Traditional estate-planning attorney Individualized advice, complex tax and business planning, unusual assets, and implementation Often costs more and availability and quality vary
Basic online will or trust platform Low-cost, fast, self-service documents May offer limited human review and may not handle Washington-specific or complex issues
CPA, financial planner, or wealth adviser Tax projections, liquidity, valuation, insurance, and financial coordination Usually complements rather than replaces legal document preparation

General online providers such as LegalZoom and Trust & Will may be useful comparison points, but readers should verify current Washington availability, pricing, product scope, and lawyer involvement directly. A basic online will product is not automatically equivalent to Washington estate-tax planning.

Funding, scale, and the company’s next test

GeekWire reported that Legata had raised $725,000 and had fewer than 10 employees as of February 2026. Those figures describe an early-stage snapshot, not necessarily the company’s current capitalization or headcount.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The central business challenge is whether Legata can standardize enough of estate planning to make the service accessible without flattening the legal and family differences that make estate planning difficult. Its success will depend on more than document generation: it will need clear lawyer accountability, reliable state coverage, strong privacy practices, useful implementation support, and a maintenance model customers actually use.

Readers should also avoid assuming national availability. The February 2026 reporting discussed an initial Washington focus and possible broader expansion, but current state-by-state availability should be confirmed with Legata.
