Qumulo appointed Douglas Gourlay president and chief executive officer on July 9, 2024. He succeeded Bill Richter, joined Qumulo’s board, and took charge as the Seattle data-storage company pursued a more software-led strategy spanning hybrid cloud, enterprise file and object data, and AI infrastructure.
Gourlay remains listed as Qumulo’s CEO on the company’s leadership page as of August 18, 2026. The appointment therefore represents an ongoing leadership direction, not a short-lived transition.
What happened at Qumulo?
Qumulo announced Gourlay’s appointment on July 9, 2024. The change combined the president and CEO roles under Gourlay and followed Richter’s retirement after approximately eight years as chief executive.

Qumulo’s current leadership page confirms Gourlay is still CEO as of August 18, 2026, although current titles for every member of the 2024 leadership team should not be assumed without newer confirmation.
Who is Douglas Gourlay?
Gourlay brought approximately 26 years of Silicon Valley experience to Qumulo. He spent roughly a decade at Cisco before moving to Arista Networks, where his most recent position was vice president and general manager. Earlier in his career, he served as a U.S. Army infantry officer.
That background combines enterprise sales, networking, software, data-center infrastructure, and large-scale technology operations. It is particularly relevant to Qumulo because distributed data platforms depend not only on storage capacity, but also on network performance, automation, data movement, and operational simplicity.
His Cisco experience may help Qumulo navigate large-company purchasing processes and channel relationships. His Arista experience is relevant to software-led infrastructure and cloud-scale customers. It is also reasonable to infer that Gourlay could help Qumulo sell to cloud, AI, application, and infrastructure teams—not only traditional storage administrators. That broader go-to-market effect is an analysis of the appointment, not a stated guarantee from Qumulo.
What Qumulo does
Founded in 2012 by former Isilon employees including Peter Godman, Neal Fachan, and Aaron Passey, Qumulo began with a hardware-oriented storage model. It has since increasingly emphasized software that can run across customer data centers, public clouds, and edge locations.
Qumulo now describes its offering as a cloud data platform for managing file and object data. Its platform supports common enterprise access methods including SMB, NFS, and S3, alongside capabilities such as snapshots, replication, quotas, analytics, security controls, and large-scale namespace management. Its current positioning is broader than that of a conventional cloud-storage provider: the goal is a common data-management layer across different infrastructure environments.

Gourlay took over during a major transition in enterprise infrastructure. Companies were placing data in multiple clouds, on-premises systems, and edge locations while also seeking faster access to unstructured data for analytics and AI.
Qumulo’s strategy addresses that problem by attempting to make data available and manageable across locations rather than treating each environment as an isolated storage system. A networking-oriented executive is a logical fit for that challenge because moving and accessing large datasets requires coordination among storage, networks, compute, applications, and cloud services.
The appointment can therefore be read as a possible effort to scale Qumulo’s enterprise go-to-market operation and strengthen its identity as a software and platform company. It does not, by itself, prove that Qumulo will win the AI-storage market or that a particular financial outcome will follow.
Gourlay’s initial priorities
In the 2024 appointment coverage, Gourlay highlighted rising demand for data and the opportunity created by the AI boom. He focused especially on “applied AI,” including inference and runtime workloads, rather than treating AI as only a model-training problem.
His stated agenda included helping customers move data from systems of record into AI systems. He also said he planned to spend time with customers before making major capital-markets decisions. The available reporting does not support claims that he was hired specifically to take Qumulo public.

That customer-first emphasis is significant because AI infrastructure requirements vary widely. Training, inference, data preparation, checkpointing, and GPU-burst workloads can have different latency, throughput, metadata, and cost profiles.
Qumulo’s historical financial and organizational position
The 2024 reporting provided several historical indicators of Qumulo’s position:
- A $125 million Series E financing in 2020.
- An approximately $1.2 billion valuation after that financing.
- About $340 million in total funding.
- More than 1,000 customers.
- Approximately 300 employees.
- A workforce reduction of about 19%, or roughly 80 employees, in 2022 during the technology downturn.
Reported investors included BlackRock, Highland Capital Partners, Madrona Venture Group, Kleiner Perkins, and Amity Ventures. Gourlay also described Qumulo as generating “significant free cash flow,” but the report did not provide detailed financial statements or audited figures.
These are historical figures from 2024 reporting, not verified 2026 revenue, headcount, valuation, customer, or funding totals. They should not be used to estimate Qumulo’s current private-company value.
What changed after Gourlay became CEO?
Qumulo’s subsequent product direction has been consistent with the hybrid-cloud and AI themes identified at the time of the appointment.
Cloud-native availability
Qumulo announced the general availability of Cloud Native Qumulo on September 23, 2024. The company offers cloud options across AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. Azure also includes a fully managed native option, while other deployment choices may require customers to manage cloud resources and architecture themselves.

Usage-based AWS pricing
On April 22, 2025, Qumulo announced pay-as-you-go pricing through AWS Marketplace, alongside prepaid credits for customers seeking volume-based pricing. This gives buyers a consumption-oriented purchasing route, but it does not create one universal public price for every deployment.

Total cloud spending can include Qumulo charges as well as cloud compute, storage, network transfer, API, and operational costs. A cloud-native deployment is not automatically a fully managed service.
AI and distributed data access
Qumulo continues to market access to large unstructured datasets for AI and machine-learning workflows. Its AI materials emphasize making existing data available to AI systems without necessarily copying or migrating every dataset into a separate location. The company has also promoted AI infrastructure features, including a Cloud AI Accelerator intended to improve access to data for distributed GPU environments.
Claims about cost reductions, API savings, scale, or performance are vendor claims and should be evaluated against the buyer’s own workload, cloud region, network design, concurrency, metadata behavior, and data-transfer patterns.

- Distributed infrastructure as one problem: Qumulo’s strategy treats data location, access, movement, governance, and performance as connected concerns.
These points are interpretive conclusions based on Gourlay’s background and Qumulo’s product direction. They should not be presented as independently verified evidence that the company’s market share, profitability, or valuation has improved.

Who should consider Qumulo?
Qumulo may be relevant to organizations with large, active unstructured datasets and a need to operate across data centers, clouds, and edge sites. Potentially suitable use cases include media and entertainment, healthcare imaging, life sciences, energy, public-sector workloads, analytics, and AI platforms.
Buyers should assess:
- SMB, NFS, S3, REST, and application compatibility.
- Cloud, on-premises, and edge deployment requirements.
- Fully managed versus self-managed operations.
- Metadata performance, throughput, latency, and concurrency for the intended workload.
- Snapshots, replication, ransomware protection, auditing, identity integration, and compliance controls.
- Data sovereignty, encryption, cloud-region, and replication requirements.
- Migration tooling and support commitments.
- Qumulo licensing plus cloud compute, storage, API, egress, and operational costs.
Qumulo is not a consumer cloud-drive product. Organizations that need only simple backup, archival storage, or small-scale file sharing may not need a unified enterprise file-data platform.
Alternatives and comparison context
Qumulo is not a one-for-one replacement in every deployment. Buyers may also compare it with Dell PowerScale, NetApp ONTAP, WEKA, and VAST Data. Cloud-centric buyers may evaluate Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP or Azure NetApp Files.

Bottom line
Douglas Gourlay’s appointment matters because Qumulo is competing as more than a traditional storage vendor. His Cisco and Arista background aligns with a company trying to connect enterprise file and object data across cloud, on-premises, and edge environments while supporting AI-driven demand for fast access to unstructured data.
The clearest evidence of the strategy is Qumulo’s continued cloud-native, hybrid-cloud, and AI product emphasis through 2026. For buyers, the practical question is not simply who leads Qumulo, but whether its platform, operating model, protocol support, and total cost fit the organization’s data and AI architecture.
