Form I-9 Compliance, LLC reported unauthorized access to part of its network in 2024, and later reporting put the potential impact at more than 193,000 people. Names and Social Security numbers were among the information reported exposed. The incident involved a private service provider used by employers—not a reported breach of the federal government’s Form I-9 systems. A related class-action settlement had a May 14, 2025 claim deadline, which has passed.
What happened in the Form I-9 Compliance breach?
Form I-9 Compliance, a company that helps employers manage employment-eligibility verification, experienced unauthorized access to part of its network in early February 2024, according to reporting and court materials. The company reportedly detected the intrusion on April 12, 2024, and began notifying customers in late May.
The estimated number of people affected changed as the investigation and reporting progressed: the initial estimate was about 27,000; an October 2024 update put it near 97,000; and later reporting said the figure had risen above 193,000. What is Form I-9 Compliance?
U.S. employers use Form I-9 to verify the identity and work authorization of new hires. Form I-9 Compliance operated as a private technology or service provider that helped employers complete or manage that process.
The reported incident concerned the company’s network and information it held while providing services to employers. It was not reported as a breach of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the Department of Homeland Security, E-Verify, or another federal I-9 system. The fact that an employer handled a worker’s I-9 through a vendor does not, by itself, show that the worker’s information was exposed.
Who may have been affected?
Potentially affected people include current and former employees of businesses that used Form I-9 Compliance for employment verification. Records may be retained after a person leaves a job, so former employees should not assume they are outside the potentially affected group.

The settlement materials for Wilcopolski v. First Advantage Form I9 Compliance, LLC describe a class of U.S. residents whose personally identifiable information may have been compromised, subject to exclusions. That is a legal class definition, not proof that each person in it suffered identity theft or received a payment. If you received a breach notice, check its date and the company or employer identified. If you are unsure, ask your current or former employer’s HR or privacy office whether it used the vendor during the relevant period. The employer may not be able to confirm whether a particular individual’s information was included.
What information was reported exposed?
The reported compromised information included names and Social Security numbers. The available sources cited here do not establish that dates of birth, addresses, passport or driver’s-license details, immigration-document numbers, or financial-account data were exposed. Do not assume those additional categories were involved unless your own notice or an official filing says so.
A Social Security number can remain useful to identity thieves long after a breach, so the expired settlement claim process does not eliminate the value of basic identity-protection steps.

Was it a ransomware attack?
The available reporting did not identify a ransomware group or establish that ransomware was used. SecurityWeek reported that it was unclear whether the company had been targeted in a ransomware attack and noted that no known group had claimed responsibility. The incident is best described as unauthorized network access unless stronger evidence establishes a more specific attack method.

The proposed settlement arose from Wilcopolski v. First Advantage Form I9 Compliance, LLC, Case No. 1:24-cv-03235-LMM, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. The court issued a preliminary approval order on January 13, 2025. The settlement materials set April 14, 2025 as the deadline to request exclusion or object, and May 14, 2025 as the claim deadline.
Secondary reporting described a $650,000 settlement fund and reported a May 19, 2025 final-approval date. Those details should be treated as reported rather than as a statement of payment status: the materials cited here do not establish whether payments have been issued, how much any individual received, or whether all administration is complete. The preliminary approval order, settlement brief, and claim form provide the case and deadline details. A secondary database reports the fund and final-approval date; consult the court docket or administrator for authoritative current status.

Can you still file a claim?
No new claim can generally be filed through the settlement’s published process: its May 14, 2025 deadline has passed. If you submitted a claim on time, you can check its status or ask about payment using contact information from the official settlement website, formi9datasettlement.com. A status inquiry is different from filing a new claim. Do not rely on unsolicited messages promising late eligibility, replacement payments, or guaranteed compensation; no current late-claim procedure is established by the sources cited here.

- Verify any notice. Compare the sender and case number with the official settlement site and court materials. Do not enter your Social Security number on a page reached through an unsolicited email, text, or social-media link.
- Consider freezing your credit. A security freeze is free at each of the three nationwide credit bureaus and can block most new creditors from accessing your report, which can make it harder to open new credit in your name. Request freezes directly from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. You may need to lift a freeze temporarily when applying for credit. A freeze does not stop misuse of existing accounts or every form of identity fraud.
- Review your credit reports. Use AnnualCreditReport.com, the federally authorized site, and dispute unfamiliar information with the reporting bureau.
- Watch existing accounts. Review bank, card, and utility statements for transactions or account changes you do not recognize. Turn on transaction alerts and use multifactor authentication where available.
- Act on suspected identity theft. If you find a fraudulent account or other misuse, contact the affected company promptly and use the Federal Trade Commission’s recovery steps at IdentityTheft.gov.
- Be cautious with employment-related messages. A scammer may use a breach story to make a fake onboarding, payroll, tax-form, employment-verification, or immigration-status request sound credible. Confirm unexpected requests through a known employer contact, not the contact details in the message.
The company reportedly offered affected individuals free identity-theft protection and credit monitoring as part of its initial response. That offer was distinct from the later court settlement. Monitoring may alert you to certain suspicious activity; it does not prevent a new account from being opened. A credit freeze is a preventive step for many new-credit applications, while neither measure protects every kind of account or fraud.

Be wary of anyone who asks you to pay a fee to release settlement money, provide gift cards or cryptocurrency, share bank credentials, or send a full Social Security number through an unsolicited link. Verify the web address independently and use administrator contact details from the official settlement site or court documents. If a message claims you need to act urgently to preserve a payment, pause and check it through an independently verified channel.
