On January 9, 2024, Flip Electronics and Ampleon announced an agreement to extend the availability and manufacturing lifecycle of Ampleon’s legacy LDMOS RF power transistors. Flip said its model combines authorized distribution with inventory acquisition, wafer procurement and licensed intellectual property, while Ampleon continues as the original manufacturer and authorizing brand. Flip also said the arrangement could support uninterrupted manufacturing for more than 20 years, a company projection rather than a publicly verified guarantee.
The agreement is a supply-continuity measure for existing RF equipment—not a new LDMOS technology launch. Because the announcement is historical, buyers in 2026 should confirm each part number’s current status, lead time, production source and documentation before relying on it.
What the agreement actually changes
The announcement covers Ampleon’s legacy LDMOS (laterally diffused metal-oxide semiconductor) RF transistor portfolio. These silicon devices are used in power amplifiers, and many installed systems were designed, tested and approved around a particular transistor, package and matching network.

Flip is described as both an authorized distributor and an extended-life manufacturer. Its stated lifecycle model includes acquiring inventory, procuring wafers and licensing original-manufacturer intellectual property so older components can continue to be supplied. The EE Times report does not identify Flip’s specific wafer fabs, assembly plants, test facilities or responsibilities in each production stage.
#1 Best Overall
Ampleon remains the original RF-power supplier and authorizing manufacturer. The companies said products would be certified and guaranteed by Flip and remain 100% authorized by Ampleon. Those are statements made in the announcement; obtain current certificates and quality records for the exact device you intend to buy. EE Times reported the agreement on January 9, 2024.
Why a “legacy” RF transistor can still be valuable
Legacy means an established product, not automatically an unusable one. A replacement can force changes to the RF matching network, bias circuit, thermal interface, EMC performance and software or protection settings. It may also require regulatory approval, customer acceptance testing, reliability work and new field-service stock.
For a long-lived transmitter or instrument, preserving a qualified component can therefore cost less and introduce less risk than redesigning the amplifier. That logic is particularly strong where a system’s service documentation, approvals and maintenance procedures already specify the original device.
Applications named in the announcement
| Application | Why continuity can matter |
|---|---|
| 4G LTE infrastructure | Installed radio hardware may remain in service after the original production window for its transistors. |
| 5G NR infrastructure | Service requirements for existing LDMOS equipment can coexist with newer, GaN-based designs. |
| Broadcast | Transmitters often have long service lives and tightly qualified RF chains. |
| Industrial RF | Equipment may depend on a specific transistor and impedance-matching network. |
| Scientific and medical | A component change can trigger extensive validation or regulatory work. |
| Navigation | Approved configurations and traceability may be more important than adopting the newest device. |
| Safety radio | Reliable, compatible replacements can take priority over technology refresh. |
The announcement refers to customers worldwide, but current regional distribution, export requirements and package availability must be checked separately. It does not publish a complete list of covered Ampleon part numbers.

What Flip’s authorization means—and what it does not
An authorized channel can provide a documented route to genuine components instead of relying on brokered or excess inventory. It may support traceability, warranty handling, change notification and customer or regulator acceptance. However, “authorized” does not by itself prove that a current production lot is identical in every manufacturing detail to an old lot.
Before placing an order, request:
- The exact Ampleon ordering code, revision and package or flange variant.
- Certificate of conformance, lot and date-code traceability, and applicable electrical test results.
- Current datasheet, reliability qualification and any process, assembly or test change notices.
- Confirmation whether the unit is newly manufactured under license, original inventory or remanufactured stock.
- Packaging, moisture-handling and counterfeit-screening procedures.
- Warranty terms and the return-material authorization process.
Information the 2024 announcement does not establish
- Which individual Ampleon part numbers are included.
- Current 2026 stock, pricing, minimum order quantities or lead times.
- Wafer, assembly and final-test locations.
- Whether every package or electrical grade remains supported.
- The contractual meaning of Flip’s “20+ years” support statement.
- Whether the program is active for a particular customer’s region or volume.
Flip’s statement that it can support customers for more than 20 years should be treated as a long-term-support objective, not a guaranteed production term, unless a product-specific agreement says otherwise.
Engineering checks before treating a part as a replacement
RF transistors that share a package or headline voltage rating are not necessarily drop-in substitutes. Compare the proposed production lot with the design baseline for:
Recommended Free Tools
- Operating frequency, output power, gain, efficiency and linearity.
- Bias conditions, gain compression and stability behavior.
- Load-mismatch tolerance and frequency-dependent matching.
- Thermal resistance, mounting surface and flange dimensions.
- Pinout, package parasitics and recommended matching network.
- Performance over temperature and normal production variation.
Use a controlled engineering build to verify RF, thermal and protection behavior before releasing the part to production or field service. A device can meet its datasheet ratings and still fail in an existing amplifier because the surrounding network was optimized for a different die or package.

Legacy continuation versus redesign
| Option | Advantages | Risks and work |
|---|---|---|
| Authorized legacy LDMOS | Preserves a validated design and can reduce redesign and recertification effort. | May carry a higher unit cost, lower efficiency or dependence on a specialized supply. |
| Newer LDMOS | May improve efficiency, availability or cost for a refreshed platform. | Requires RF, thermal, reliability and often regulatory requalification. |
| GaN migration | Can enable higher power density or efficiency in suitable systems. | Usually requires substantial changes to biasing, protection, matching and thermal design. |
| Brokered or excess inventory | May provide rapid access or a lower apparent price. | Higher risks of counterfeit parts, mixed lots, storage damage and uncertain test history. |
| Complete amplifier replacement | Avoids transistor-level redesign. | Can increase system cost and create mechanical, firmware or regulatory integration work. |
A practical sourcing checklist
- Identify the device. Record the full Ampleon ordering code, revision, package, approved alternates and the equipment revision in which it is used.
- Ask for a current quotation. Confirm whether supply is from stock, scheduled production or made to order; request price, minimum quantity and lead time.
- Validate provenance. Obtain authorization confirmation, lot traceability, certificates, test coverage and packaging details.
- Review continuity terms. Ask about wafer availability, last-time-buy notices, change-control notifications, safety stock and bonded inventory.
- Qualify the lot. Test representative samples in the amplifier for RF output, gain, efficiency, thermal performance, stability and mismatch protection.
- Document the decision. Retain supplier records, test results and approval evidence for future service and regulatory audits.
Who should consider this route?
The arrangement is most relevant to OEMs, contract manufacturers, operators and service organizations supporting broadcast transmitters, cellular infrastructure, industrial RF equipment, scientific or medical systems, navigation hardware and safety radios. It is especially useful when the installed design still has meaningful service life and redesign would be expensive.
For a completely new platform, compare lifecycle supply with current LDMOS and GaN options on efficiency, cooling, power density, cost and expected availability. The fact that an authorized legacy device can be sourced does not make it the best technology for a new design.
