A Venmo payment is usually declined for one of two reasons: your bank or card issuer rejected the charge, or Venmo’s automated security system flagged it. Follow the error message first, then contact the issuer, try your Venmo balance, switch to another linked account or card, and retry later. A Venmo balance is not required for ordinary payments.
What to do when Venmo declines a payment
- Read and follow the instructions in the exact error message.
- Ask your bank or card issuer whether it rejected the transaction.
- Add money to your Venmo balance and retry using the balance.
- Retry with a different eligible bank account or card.
- Wait and try the payment again later, particularly if Venmo may be experiencing a technical or security review.
Venmo does not promise that every decline will include a user-visible explanation. Its documented primary causes are an issuer decline or an automated Venmo security flag (Venmo payment-declined guidance).

Cards
A card may be rejected because the issuer sees insufficient available funds, a fraud risk, or a billing-detail mismatch. The card must be registered in your name. Venmo accepts Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express and prepaid cards, but it does not currently accept a PayPal card or PayPal account as a Venmo payment method (Venmo bank and card FAQ).
Some cards require a ZIP code. If your ZIP code or billing address recently changed, contact the issuer and make sure the details match before adding the card (card FAQ; adding a payment method).

Bank accounts
For a “We lost connection with your bank” message, delete the bank account and add it again. Venmo says this can happen after you change your online-banking password (bank FAQ).
If you add an account manually with its routing and account numbers, verification normally takes one business day and can take up to three business days. Microtransfers are $1 or less; keep at least $2 in the account to avoid overdraft or bank fees. You cannot pay from that account until manual verification is complete. Do not enter the check number printed after the account number, because that can make transfers fail or be rejected (Venmo’s adding-a-payment-method instructions).
An account marked Invalid can mean the numbers are wrong, the bank cannot locate the account, the account cannot accept electronic or ACH transactions (a common issue with some savings accounts), an account transaction limit was exceeded, or funds are being held. Confirm the details and ACH eligibility with the bank; if the details were wrong, delete and re-add the account. Venmo says Support can only rarely revalidate an account after a temporary restriction, so another bank account or card may be necessary (invalid bank account guidance).

Rule out Venmo limits
Limits are generally rolling weekly limits: a transaction counts for exactly seven days from authorization, rather than resetting at midnight on Sunday. For example, a payment authorized Monday at 11:00 a.m. stops counting Monday at 11:01 a.m. the following week. Venmo can review and change limits based on account history, activity and other factors.
| Activity | Current stated limit | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Personal-profile spending without identity verification | $299.99 per rolling week | Includes person-to-person and authorized-merchant payments. |
| Personal-profile spending after identity verification | Up to $60,000 per rolling week | Venmo says other reasons besides limits can still cause a decline. |
| Bank transfer after identity verification | $5,000 per transfer; $19,999.99 per rolling week | Applies to transfers to a bank. |
| Bank transfer without identity verification | $999.99 per rolling week | Applies to transfers to a bank. |
| Instant transfer | $0.26 minimum; under $0.25 cannot be completed | Venmo’s stated minimum threshold. |
| Add Money, where the feature is shown | Up to $10,000 per week from a bank; $3,000 from a debit card | Possible limits, not universal guarantees; Venmo can decline for other reasons. |
Start identity verification at Me → Settings (gear) → Identity Verification. See Venmo’s personal payment limits and bank-transfer limits pages for account-specific information.
Fix an unspecified error or app problem
For a generic error, use Venmo’s order rather than repeatedly submitting the payment:

- Confirm the account and device meet Venmo’s usage requirements.
Venmo supports Apple devices running iOS 14 or later and Android Lollipop/API 26 or later (error-message troubleshooting).

- 400 or 403: The action may not be possible or allowed. Check applicable payment or transfer limits. A login error can also occur if you choose Sign Up instead of Sign In, or try to log in outside the United States; Venmo login is U.S.-only.
- Bad state: Venmo may be having a technical problem or outage. Check in-app transaction history before retrying. If the transaction failed, try again later.
If a failed bank payment froze your account
An insufficient-funds event or an exceeded ACH-transfer allowance can cause a bank-funded payment to fail and Venmo to freeze the account. The bank, not Venmo, can provide the specific bank-side failure reason.
- Use the in-app prompt and tap Restore your account, or visit venmo.com/recover in a computer browser.
- Choose the repayment method. A debit-card repayment is fastest; a bank-account repayment can take up to five business days, and the account stays frozen until recovery finishes.
- To pay only part of the amount, tap the repayment amount before tapping Pay, then enter the amount. Incoming Venmo payments are automatically applied to what you owe.
Venmo emails you when the account is unfrozen (failed-payment account recovery).

Do not confuse a payment decline with a bank-transfer decline
A standard transfer to your bank can be rejected by Venmo’s automated review even when you are below the published limit. Venmo advises trying again later and may request identity documents; not every transfer is approved (standard bank-transfer declines).
For a transfer problem, distinguish the direction of money: a person-to-person payment uses a funding method to pay someone, while a bank transfer moves an existing Venmo balance out to your bank. The limits and review rules are different.

When an online purchase fails
Venmo attributes a declined online purchase to insufficient funds or suspected fraud. Contact the merchant first. If the merchant cannot resolve it, open Me → Settings → Get Help → Chat With Us in the app (online-purchase help).

After a merchant issues a refund, processing can take one to five business days. It normally returns to the original payment method, although Venmo may sometimes credit the Venmo account.
Tap to Pay error messages
| Message | Meaning and fix |
|---|---|
| Payment failed | The seller may be on a phone call or using another communication over the device’s network. End that activity and ensure a device passcode is enabled. |
| Charge not complete | Usually a connection problem or timeout; reconnect and retry. |
| Can’t connect | Wi‑Fi or mobile-data connection problem. |
| Amount too low | The charge is below $1.00. |
| Amount too high | The amount exceeded a protective charge limit; retry with a smaller amount. |
Tap to Pay on iPhone also requires an active iCloud sign-in with a valid Apple ID and acceptance of Apple’s Terms and Conditions (Tap to Pay error guidance).
