Meta’s “Subscription for no ads” has been available to eligible UK adults since its September 2025 rollout. It gives users a choice: continue using Facebook and Instagram free with personalised advertising, or pay a monthly fee to remove Meta-served ads. Web pricing started at £2.99 a month for the first account, while purchases through iOS or Android started at £3.99.
The subscription is not a completely commercial-free version of either platform, and it is not a universal anti-tracking plan. Branded content, creator posts, business posts and messages may remain, while Meta says information will not be used for advertising during the subscription.
What Meta launched in the UK
Meta introduced its Subscription for no ads option in the UK in September 2025 after engagement with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). The rollout was described as a “consent or pay” choice for users aged 18 and over.
This is not a separate paid edition of Facebook or Instagram. It is an account-level choice within Meta’s existing services:

- Paid access: pay a monthly subscription to remove Meta-served ads.
The service is linked to Meta’s Accounts Centre. A subscription can cover eligible Facebook and Instagram accounts grouped in the same Accounts Centre, but accounts outside that grouping may require a separate choice or subscription.
How much does the UK subscription cost?
Meta’s UK launch pricing was:

Meta attributed the higher mobile price to Apple and Google app-store fees. Taxes, location, currency and later pricing changes may affect the amount shown at checkout, so treat these as the announced UK prices rather than a guarantee of today’s final charge.
Assuming the launch prices remain unchanged and the accounts are in the same Accounts Centre:
- One account: £2.99 monthly on the web or £3.99 in-app.
- Two accounts: £4.99 monthly on the web or £6.99 in-app.
- Three accounts: £6.99 monthly on the web or £9.99 in-app.
That is approximately £35.88 a year for one account purchased on the web, or £47.88 through iOS or Android, before any applicable changes to price or tax. Comparing the web checkout with the in-app price can therefore make a meaningful difference.
Does one payment cover Facebook and Instagram?
Yes, where the relevant accounts are connected through the same Meta Accounts Centre and are eligible for the subscription. Additional accounts can incur additional monthly charges.
Do not assume that every Facebook and Instagram account you own is automatically included. Check the accounts shown during sign-up and review your Accounts Centre before paying. This is particularly important if you have separate personal, creator or business identities.
What does the subscription remove?
The subscription is intended to remove advertising delivered through Meta’s advertising system from the subscribed account. Meta says ads should stop appearing within 24 hours or after you restart the app.

Facebook Lite users may need to close the app for at least 10 minutes. Seeing an ad immediately after payment does not necessarily mean the subscription failed; allow the stated activation period first.
Normal platform functionality remains available, subject to Meta’s terms and any account-specific limitations. The subscription does not delete your account or require you to stop using Facebook or Instagram.
What it does not remove
“Ad-free” does not mean that every commercial communication disappears. Meta’s help information says subscribers may still see:
- Posts from businesses;
- Creator posts and sponsored-looking content posted directly by creators;
- Branded content from accounts you follow;
- Messages from businesses;
- Product recommendations, affiliate links and other commercial material embedded in ordinary posts.
The practical distinction is whether content is being delivered as a Meta-served advertisement or appears as an ordinary post, message or creator promotion. The subscription is best understood as removing Meta-served ads, not as creating a completely commercial-free feed.

No—not in the broad sense often suggested by the phrase “stop tracking”. Meta’s narrower claim is that, while subscribed, your information will not be used for ads.
That does not promise zero data processing. Meta may still process information for purposes such as operating and securing your account, providing platform features, complying with legal obligations and other purposes described in its policies and no-ads terms.
For that reason, the subscription may appeal to someone who wants to avoid having their information used for Meta advertising, but it should not be treated as a complete privacy service or universal data-processing opt-out.

How to subscribe
Meta’s screens and menu labels can change by app version, account and region. The stable process is:

- Open Facebook or Instagram while logged into the eligible UK account.
- Respond to Meta’s subscription choice prompt if it appears.
- Choose the option to subscribe for no ads.
- Review the monthly price and the Facebook and Instagram accounts covered.
- Check the payment method and complete payment through the web, Apple App Store or Google Play.
Meta’s support material also refers to managing the choice through Ad Preferences and Accounts Centre. If price matters, compare the web and in-app totals before subscribing. The web route was the cheaper option at the UK launch.
How to cancel
The subscription is billed monthly unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the next payment date. Menu wording may vary, but the usual route is:
- Open Facebook or Instagram.
- Go to Settings and privacy.
- Open Accounts Centre.
- Select Ad preferences.
- Open the no-ads subscription and follow the current cancellation or free-with-ads prompts.
If you bought the subscription through Apple or Google, you may need the same Apple ID or Google account used at sign-up. Meta says that cancelling through Apple or Google settings first may not complete every step, so check the Meta Ad Preferences flow as well. See Meta’s cancellation guidance for the current process.
After cancellation, Facebook and Instagram remain available. The account returns to the free-with-ads experience, and Meta says information may then be used for advertising under that choice. Cancelling does not delete the account.

Meta warns that a subscriber’s ability to advertise and monetise with ads may be limited. This could matter if the account is used to:
- Run or manage advertising campaigns;
- Boost posts;
- Manage business advertising tools;
- Earn money through Meta ad monetisation;
- Operate a creator or professional account.
This does not establish that every creator loses monetisation or that every business account will be affected in the same way. The impact depends on the account and tools involved. Review the warning shown for your account before subscribing, and consider staying on the free-with-ads option if advertising or monetisation is essential.

Why did Meta introduce the option?
The UK launch followed regulatory engagement with the ICO. The regulator said Meta’s previous approach—using targeted advertising as part of the standard terms for using Facebook and Instagram—was not consistent with UK law.
The ICO described the new arrangement as a “consent or pay” model: users can consent to personalised advertising or pay for an ad-free service. That does not mean the ICO formally endorsed every aspect of Meta’s product or guaranteed that the model is permanent.

Meta has presented the UK arrangement as different from its EU approach, where regulators have also pushed for less-personalised advertising options. UK users should not transfer EU prices, menus or regulatory choices to their accounts; the two arrangements are not identical.

Ads continue after payment
Allow up to 24 hours and restart the app. Facebook Lite users may need to close it for at least 10 minutes. If ads continue after that, check whether the subscription is active and whether you are viewing the correct account.
One account is still ad-supported
Check Accounts Centre. The account may not have been included in the same centre as the subscribed account. Confirm the account grouping before purchasing another subscription.
You appear to have been charged twice
Meta says that adding an account subscribed to no ads to another already-subscribed Accounts Centre can trigger a notice to cancel the earlier subscription. Review Accounts Centre, receipts and payment history before assuming both charges are necessary.
Cancellation is not working
For an Apple or Google purchase, use the same Apple ID or Google account used during sign-up and also check Meta’s Ad Preferences flow. App-store subscriptions can require management through the original payment platform.

Commercial content is still visible
This can be expected. A business post, creator promotion, branded-content post or business message is not necessarily a Meta-served ad. The subscription does not guarantee that all commercial material disappears.
You want a refund
For a website purchase, refunds are subject to Meta’s approval. Apple and Google purchases are handled under their respective refund policies. Meta’s refund guidance explains the relevant routes.
Should you pay for Facebook and Instagram without ads?
Paying may make sense if you strongly dislike Meta-served ads, value a cleaner feed, want to avoid having your information used for advertising, and accept that the charge renews monthly. It is more economical to buy through the web under the announced pricing, particularly if you have multiple linked accounts.

Free users can still use Meta’s advertising resources and ad controls, including Ad Preferences and the “Why am I seeing this ad?” explanation. Those tools can influence the advertising experience, but they do not make the feed ad-free.
Bottom line
Meta’s UK subscription is a paid opt-out from Meta-served advertising, not a paid requirement for using Facebook and Instagram. The free option remains available, and the subscription does not remove every commercial post or stop every kind of data processing.
Before subscribing, check the final price, the accounts included in Accounts Centre and any warning about advertising or monetisation. For many personal users, the decision comes down to whether a cleaner feed and narrower advertising-data choice are worth at least £2.99 a month. For creators, advertisers and businesses, the possible loss of professional functionality may be more important than the absence of ads.
