Yes—Boston Dynamics offered career paths in 2025 well beyond robotics research. The company’s work spanned robot software and controls, mechanical and electrical engineering, manufacturing, testing, field deployment, support, product, and business operations. But 2025 has passed: the roles and developments below describe that calendar year, not vacancies open today. For current opportunities, check the official careers page and each linked requisition.

Boston Dynamics in 2025: a robotics company moving toward commercial scale

Boston Dynamics develops mobile robots for commercial, industrial, enterprise, and university research uses—not consumer home robots. Its portfolio included Spot for mobile inspection and related applications, Stretch for warehouse logistics, and Atlas, a humanoid platform still in an earlier commercial-development stage in the company’s 2025 materials. The company describes a shift from a foundation in robotics research and development toward a commercial robotics business. That matters to applicants: the work can involve not only inventing a capability, but also making it reliable, manufacturable, supportable, and useful at a customer site.

Boston Dynamics says its robots are designed and perfected in Waltham, Massachusetts, and made in the United States. Waltham is a central engineering hub, but it is not a permanent map of every job: manufacturing, service, support, and international positions may be based elsewhere. Verify location, travel, and work arrangement in the individual posting. The company’s FAQ identifies Hyundai Motor Group as its 80% owner and SoftBank as holding the remaining 20%; ownership and corporate arrangements can change, so treat that as the company’s stated information, not a timeless fact. Two 2025 announcements help explain the company’s direction. In February, Boston Dynamics announced a partnership with the Robotics & AI Institute to develop reinforcement-learning capabilities for electric Atlas, including work relevant to mobile manipulation and transferring skills from simulation to physical robots. In April, Boston Dynamics and Hyundai Motor Group announced expanded collaboration around manufacturing capacity, U.S. robotics production, and deploying Spot and Atlas in Hyundai-related operations. These were plans and areas of collaboration, not proof that every announced capability or production target had already been achieved. The Robotics & AI Institute is a separate organization, despite the partnership. February 2025 partnership announcement · April 2025 collaboration announcement

Career paths: match your skills to the work, not just the word “robotics”

Hiring spans the system around a robot as well as the robot itself. A software engineer, manufacturing specialist, or field applications engineer may be a better match than someone searching only for a “robotics scientist” title.

Robotics software, autonomy, and AI

Teams in this family may work on robot behavior, motion planning, perception and computer vision, locomotion, simulation, fleet and mission software, developer tools, cloud and data infrastructure, embedded software, or firmware. Machine learning and reinforcement learning can be relevant where robots must adapt to physical conditions, but a model’s performance in a lab or simulator is only part of the problem. Latency, compute limits, sensor noise, real-world variation, safe fallback behavior, and debugging intermittent failures all matter. The 2025 Atlas partnership made reinforcement learning and sim-to-real transfer especially visible strategic areas; it does not mean every software opening involved Atlas or machine learning.

Mechanical and electrical engineering

Mechanical work can include mechanisms, actuators, structures, gearing and transmissions, lightweight materials, thermal behavior, reliability, and design for manufacture and assembly. Electrical and embedded work can involve motors, sensors, power and battery systems, electrical architecture, board-level development, instrumentation, and real-time firmware. Testing a robot also makes tolerance analysis, validation, failure analysis, and collaboration across hardware and software boundaries valuable.

Manufacturing, test, and operations

Commercial robotics needs repeatable production as well as prototypes. Relevant work may include manufacturing engineering, assembly, manufacturing test, calibration, supply-chain and procurement engineering, supplier quality, reliability, validation, facilities, lab operations, and production support. The April 2025 Hyundai collaboration placed manufacturing scale and U.S. robotics production prominently in the company’s stated direction. Candidates with process control, test automation, fixtures, quality systems, root-cause analysis, or supplier experience should not overlook these routes.

An electronics manufacturing and supply-chain internship posting is one example of a student path outside conventional robot research. Its existence illustrates the breadth of work; it does not establish that the role remains open or that its requirements apply elsewhere. Field applications, service, and customer support

Robots have to work in buildings, warehouses, factories, and other operating environments—not only in a controlled lab. Field applications and service engineers, technical support specialists, trainers, deployment and customer-success teams, solutions or sales engineers, and fleet-operations staff help install, troubleshoot, operate, and improve systems. These jobs can suit people who combine practical technical ability with clear communication, customer discovery, systems integration, and sound judgment under time pressure. They may involve travel or on-site work; confirm the conditions in the posting.

Product and non-engineering roles

Robotics companies also need product managers, UX and human-robot interaction specialists, program managers, product marketing, finance, legal and compliance, recruiting and HR, IT and business systems, procurement, and facilities teams. These roles support development and commercialization without requiring every employee to be a robotics engineer. The careers page has shown openings across such functions as well as engineering and support; listings change frequently. Boston Dynamics careers

Internships and early-career routes

Boston Dynamics says it offers paid internships and developmental programs to full-time students pursuing bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD degrees in technical or nontechnical fields. The company describes internships of about 10–12 weeks and six-month co-op opportunities. Exact programs, eligibility, and openings vary by year and team. The company says internship recruiting begins in the new year, while its FAQ says internships are typically posted in February or March. A practical approach is to begin watching in January, then apply promptly when a relevant requisition appears. Careers and internships · FAQ

Students can upload a resume to the Talent Hub for consideration for future positions, but that is not a substitute for applying directly to a specific open job. Nor is an internship a promised route to a full-time offer: one internship posting says conversion depends on performance, business need, and approved headcount. Plan for the internship as a valuable experience in its own right, not a guaranteed hiring pipeline. Internship posting with conversion qualification

What qualifications should you build?

Requirements vary by requisition and level. A degree in robotics, mechanical or electrical engineering, computer science, controls, or a related field can be relevant, but do not assume one particular credential is mandatory across all roles. Likewise, C++, Python, embedded C, Linux, ROS, CAD, or a specific simulator may matter for a particular team; the reviewed company materials do not establish any of them as universal requirements.

Build a portfolio that proves execution

A small, complete project is often more informative than an ambitious concept with no working demonstration. Useful examples include a wheeled or legged robot with closed-loop control; a perception-and-navigation system evaluated under changing light or obstacles; a simulation project that measures and explains the sim-to-real gap; an embedded motor-control project with timing and fault handling; a manipulator that accounts for uncertain grasping and contact; or a manufacturing/test fixture with measurement and quality checks.

For each project, provide a concise repository, a short video of the system operating, setup instructions, a diagram or architecture summary, test conditions and results, and a technical write-up. Explain what failed, what you changed, what the system cannot yet do, and how you made it safer or more robust. Be precise about your own contribution to team projects. A simulation is a legitimate project, but label it honestly rather than presenting it as hardware experience. Familiarity with ROS 2 or other open tools can help; it does not by itself show production readiness. ROS documentation

How to apply

  1. Start at the official careers page. Filter for discipline, location, and job type, and confirm that the requisition is still accepting applications. Do not rely on old search results or archived 2025 postings as live vacancies. Official careers page
  2. Read the full requisition. Identify the actual system, team, required experience, location, travel expectations, and work arrangement. A title alone is not enough to establish fit.
  3. Tailor your resume to the role. Connect your experience to the job’s system boundary—such as a sensor-to-control pipeline, a production test process, or a customer deployment. Include measurable outcomes where you can support them, and do not claim tools or hardware you have not used.
  4. Apply through the linked Workday page. Use the Talent Hub for future consideration if there is no suitable role, but submit a direct application for a specific opening.
  5. Track the application. Boston Dynamics says candidates can use the Workday Candidate Homepage to follow status. Its FAQ describes a process of online application, resume review, interviews, and, depending on role and level, possible technical assessments or presentations. The company says the process may take weeks to a few months; timing is not guaranteed. Application process and candidate status information

Prepare for a role-specific interview

  • Software and AI/ML: Be ready to explain your data pipeline, evaluation design, generalization limits, latency and compute trade-offs, sim-to-real issues, and fallback behavior. Practice diagnosing an intermittent robot failure rather than discussing only model accuracy.
  • Controls and robotics: Review kinematics, dynamics, state estimation, feedback and model-based control, trajectory generation, contact, stability, sensor noise, actuator saturation, and recovery from unexpected terrain or contact.
  • Mechanical and electrical: Explain design trade-offs, load paths, fatigue, tolerances, manufacturability, power and thermal limits, component selection, failure analysis, and how you would validate a change.
  • Manufacturing and test: Prepare examples involving root-cause analysis, calibration, test coverage, fixtures, automation, supplier limits, quality escapes, process control, and moving from a prototype to repeatable production.
  • Field applications and support: Discuss customer discovery, site deployment, safety assessment, troubleshooting under pressure, training non-specialist users, communicating product limits honestly, and feeding field evidence back into product decisions.

Across all tracks, expect to explain your own projects in detail: what the objective was, what constraints mattered, how you tested the result, what did not work, and what you would change next. Exact interview formats depend on the role and level.

The careers page describes multidisciplinary collaboration, mentoring, learning and development, employee resource groups, internal mobility, inclusion, and values including “Revel in Robotics,” “Understand Why,” “Act With Integrity,” and “Work Together.” These are employer-reported values, not independent evidence of every employee’s day-to-day experience. The nature of physical robotics also suggests practical trade-offs: lab, test, manufacturing, or customer-site work may be necessary; commercial reliability and deadlines can limit research freedom; and relocation or travel may be part of some roles. Check the actual posting and ask role-specific questions in the interview.

Likely attractions include technically demanding work, hardware-software integration, varied paths from research to production and deployment, and contact with real industrial applications. The counterweights are competition, the value of demonstrated execution over coursework alone, location constraints, and the possibility that a commercially useful and reliable solution matters more than the most novel academic idea. In 2025, Atlas should be understood as under development, not as a mature consumer product line.

Is Boston Dynamics a realistic fit for you?

Candidate profile Practical fit assessment
Robotics PhD with locomotion or manipulation research Potential fit for advanced engineering or research-oriented roles; connect research to implementation, real-world constraints, and reproducible results.
Software engineer whose experience is limited to web applications Possible, especially for relevant infrastructure or product roles, but robot-facing positions benefit from evidence in systems, embedded work, simulation, testing, or hardware integration.
Mechanical engineer with production experience Potentially strong for hardware, manufacturing, test, or reliability roles; highlight manufacturability, validation, and cross-functional delivery.
Electrical engineer with embedded and motor-control work Potential fit for robot hardware and firmware; show timing, sensor and actuator integration, debugging, and fault handling.
Student without an internship but with completed projects Still possible, though competition may be high. Make the work easy to evaluate and apply early to relevant internships or co-ops.
Customer-facing automation engineer Potential fit for field applications, deployment, service, or support; emphasize troubleshooting, communication, and safe site work.
Product manager with industrial automation experience Potential fit for product and commercialization roles; show how you translated customer needs into prioritization and delivered systems.
Career changer with no technical portfolio Likely needs a bridge: targeted education, a documented project, lab or technician experience, or an adjacent industrial-automation role.

Before applying, ask yourself whether your evidence matches the requisition, whether you have worked with real hardware or operational constraints where the role requires it, whether you can work at the stated location or travel, and whether you want research, product development, manufacturing, field deployment, support, or business operations. If the answer is not yet clear, adjacent robotics suppliers, integrators, university labs, industrial automation firms, warehouse-robotics companies, and Hyundai-related robotics work can build relevant experience. A less famous first step can still develop the systems, testing, and deployment skills that matter.
