Apple’s iPhone Pocket was a knitted phone pouch priced at $149.95 or $229.95, depending on strap length. It drew jokes for looking like an expensive phone sock, yet a November 14, 2025 report said it sold out across Apple’s U.S. sales channels on launch day. That is a striking contrast—but “sold out everywhere” needs context: the same report said it was stocked at only 10 retail locations worldwide, and no unit count was disclosed.
What Apple’s iPhone Pocket was
The iPhone Pocket was a limited-edition accessory created with Japanese fashion house ISSEY MIYAKE. It was a stretchable, 3D-knitted pouch for carrying an iPhone, with room potentially for small items such as AirPods or lipstick. It was not a new iPhone, a conventional case, or a technical product.
Coverage described two versions: a short-strap model reported at $149.95 in the U.S. and a long-strap model at $229.95. The pouch could be carried by hand, worn cross-body, or attached to a bag. The reported product details and prices are in Phandroid’s November 14, 2025 coverage.

The most immediate comparison was a sock: a small fabric sleeve around a phone, sold for luxury-accessory prices. For buyers judging it as a case, the value proposition was difficult to see. It appeared to offer less impact protection than a conventional case, while the phone could still be exposed to rain, dirt, and abrasion.

There was also a practical objection. Many people already carry a phone in a pocket or bag, or use a case with a strap. Wearing a phone against the body can be uncomfortable, and a dangling strap can snag or make theft easier in crowded places. These objections explain the mockery; they do not establish that everyone disliked it. The available coverage describes polarized criticism, not a measured survey of public opinion.
What “sold out everywhere” actually means
Phandroid reported that the iPhone Pocket sold out across the U.S. on its launch day, November 14, 2025. Its report also said the limited product was available at just 10 retail locations worldwide, including Apple’s SoHo store in New York. That points to a narrow release, not a product stocked broadly in stores around the world. Macworld’s account of Apple’s head-scratching products also places the Pocket in the context of the company’s unconventional accessories.

A sellout tells us that the available initial inventory was bought or reserved. It does not tell us how many units existed, how much revenue Apple made, whether the item was restocked, or how many people wanted one but could not get it. Those figures and a verified current availability or resale picture are not established by the cited coverage. Without the inventory denominator, a quick sellout cannot be translated into broad demand or long-term commercial success.

The most plausible explanation is that shoppers were not all evaluating the Pocket as a protective phone case. It sat at the intersection of fashion, branding, and consumer electronics: a visible wearable accessory with an ISSEY MIYAKE design association and Apple’s name. For a buyer who values those signals, utility is only part of the price calculation.

Scarcity and the launch window
With only 10 reported retail locations worldwide, access was unusually limited. Scarcity can make a purchase feel time-sensitive and exclusive. That is a reasonable interpretation of the distribution and sellout, not evidence that Apple disclosed scarcity as a sales strategy.
Design, brand, and collector appeal
A fashion collaboration can appeal to design fans, Apple collectors, or people who want a distinctive accessory even if it is less practical than a standard case. Viral ridicule may have helped the product travel further online, too: a memorable joke can increase awareness as readily as praise. But the reporting does not include buyer interviews or sales demographics, so it cannot establish which motive drove purchases.

Is the iPhone Pocket worth buying?
That depends on what the buyer wants. As a fashion-led way to carry a phone hands-free, the Pocket had a clear purpose. As a substitute for a protective case or a roomy everyday bag, it was a poor fit. The cited reporting does not establish drop protection, water resistance, cleaning instructions, load limits, strap strength, warranty terms, or confirmed compatibility with every iPhone size and case combination.
It may suit buyers who value
- A distinctive knitted accessory and the ISSEY MIYAKE collaboration.
- Hands-free phone carrying as part of an outfit.
- Apple-related collecting or limited-edition design objects.
It is a poor fit for buyers who need
- Reliable drop, water, or screen protection.
- Storage for more than a phone and a few small items.
- A confirmed fit for an unusual phone size or a bulky case.
- A low-cost way to carry or protect a phone.
For anyone considering a resale listing, fit, authenticity, condition, and return protection matter. The original reported U.S. prices were $149.95 for the short strap and $229.95 for the long strap, but the available coverage does not verify current resale values or inventory. Ask for clear photos of labels and stitching, proof of purchase, the exact strap version and color, and a return option before paying a premium.

Apple’s history of accessories that invite debate
The iPhone Pocket fits a broader pattern of Apple accessories that prompt arguments over whether design, status, and brand identity justify a high or unusual price. Macworld groups it with products such as iPod Socks, Mac Pro wheels, the Pro Display XDR stand, the polishing cloth, and an iPhone crossbody strap. These are not interchangeable comparisons: some serve different practical purposes, and controversy around a product does not establish its sales performance.
The Pocket’s case is distinctive because its function was so easy to summarize—put a phone in a knitted pouch—while its price and fashion framing invited a different kind of valuation. The launch-day sellout is evidence of a fast sell-through of limited reported U.S. stock, not proof that consumers broadly wanted an expensive phone sock.
