Evans Hankey left Apple after roughly three years leading its industrial-design organization. Apple announced the planned departure in October 2022, with Hankey expected to remain for about six months to support the transition. She was not replaced by another executive in the same role: in February 2023, Apple reportedly decided to eliminate the industrial-design-chief position and have designers report directly to Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams.
What happened to Evans Hankey at Apple?
Hankey, Apple’s vice president of industrial design, announced her departure in October 2022. She had assumed leadership of the company’s hardware-design organization in 2019, after Jony Ive left Apple.

Contemporary reports said Hankey would stay for approximately six months during the transition. Apple had not named an immediate replacement when her departure was announced, and the reporting did not establish a definitive reason for her decision to leave.
Apple thanked Hankey for her leadership and contributions, but there is no verified evidence that she was fired, pushed out, or left because of a disagreement with Apple executives or its product roadmap.

Was Evans Hankey Jony Ive’s replacement?
Hankey was Ive’s successor as Apple’s head of industrial design, but calling her the replacement for Apple’s entire design leadership structure is misleading.
Ive left Apple in 2019 after nearly three decades and formed the independent design firm LoveFrom. Apple then divided design leadership between two senior executives:
- Evans Hankey: industrial design, including the physical form and hardware design of Apple products.
- Alan Dye: human-interface design, including software and user-interface design.
Both reported to Jeff Williams. In other words, Apple did not appoint one person to recreate every aspect of Ive’s former role. It created a split hardware-and-software structure instead. Axios documented that post-Ive arrangement when Apple announced Ive’s departure.
What products launched during Hankey’s tenure?
Major products launched while Hankey led industrial design included the iPhone 12 through iPhone 14 generations, redesigned Apple silicon MacBooks, and other redesigned Mac and iPad products.
That timing does not mean Hankey personally designed each product. Apple hardware is developed by large, collaborative teams over long product cycles. The more accurate description is that these products were developed and released during her period as industrial-design leader.
The length of Apple’s development cycles also means that products released soon after her departure would not necessarily reflect a sudden change in design leadership. A leadership transition in late 2022 could affect future work gradually rather than immediately changing products already far along in development.

Why did her departure matter?
Apple’s industrial design has long been closely associated with its brand. The departure therefore mattered beyond the loss of one senior executive: it raised questions about whether Apple would preserve a highly visible, centralized design authority after Ive.
The timing also attracted attention because Apple was working on new product categories, including a mixed-reality headset and possible augmented-reality glasses. Reports also discussed the company’s automotive ambitions at the time. Those projects help explain why the personnel change was considered significant, but the available reporting does not prove that any of them caused Hankey’s departure or were jeopardized by it.
Contemporary coverage described the change as the first period in decades in which Apple lacked one obvious, publicly recognized design chief in the tradition of Ive. That characterization should be understood as reporting about Apple’s post-Ive structure, not as proof that Apple had abandoned design or that its product quality had declined.

Was Alan Dye appointed as Hankey’s replacement?
No. Alan Dye was the parallel leader of human-interface design, focused primarily on software and user-interface work. He was not announced as the successor to Hankey’s industrial-design position.

In February 2023, Bloomberg reported that Apple had decided not to appoint a new industrial-design chief. Instead, industrial designers would report directly to Jeff Williams.
This was a separate milestone from Hankey’s October 2022 departure announcement:
- October 2022: Hankey’s planned departure was reported, with an expected transition period and no immediate replacement.
- February 2023: Apple’s decision not to refill the position and to eliminate the role was reported.
The documented facts support the conclusion that Apple moved toward a more executive-managed and distributed structure rather than recreating a single Ive-like design authority. Whether that was intended as a permanent philosophy or simply the organization’s next operating arrangement was not fully established in the cited reporting.

- Long-term organizational intent: The reports described the removal of the role, but did not fully explain whether Apple intended that structure to remain unchanged indefinitely.
The broader significance
Hankey’s departure was less a simple celebrity succession story than a sign of how Apple’s design organization had changed after Ive.
Under Ive, Apple had a widely recognized central design leader. After his departure, Apple split hardware and software design leadership, placed both areas under Williams, and later chose not to refill Hankey’s industrial-design-chief role. That sequence suggests a move away from a single, publicly dominant design figure toward a structure managed through senior operational leadership.
It does not establish that Apple had abandoned design, that its design quality had declined, or that Hankey’s departure resulted from a creative or financial crisis. The strongest conclusion supported by the reporting is narrower: Apple did not recreate Ive’s role after his industrial-design successor left.
