Estonia-based cybersecurity company Blackwall raised €45 million in a Series B funding round announced on March 12, 2025. Dawn Capital led the round, with existing investor MMC Ventures participating. The former BotGuard is building a security layer that hosting providers, managed-service providers, and cloud platforms can offer to small and midsize businesses (SMBs).
Blackwall’s significance is less about selling another security app directly to individual website owners and more about distributing bot mitigation and application-layer protection through the companies that host those websites.
What Blackwall raised and who invested
Blackwall said the Series B totaled €45 million, or approximately $49.2 million at the exchange rate cited in contemporary coverage. Dawn Capital led the investment, while MMC Ventures returned after leading Blackwall’s roughly €12 million Series A in 2024.

Why malicious traffic matters to smaller businesses
A website can receive large volumes of automated traffic without all of it being harmful. Benign bots include search-engine crawlers, uptime monitors, social-media preview services, payment systems, logistics integrations, and other legitimate automation.
Malicious automation has a different purpose. It can include:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Credential-stuffing attempts using stolen usernames and passwords.
- Scraping of prices, inventory, content, or customer data.
- Fake-account creation and spam submissions.
- Ad fraud that consumes marketing budgets without creating genuine customers.
- Inventory abuse, such as automated purchasing or reservation attempts.
- Vulnerability scanning and attempts to exploit exposed applications.
- Content theft and abusive API requests.
Smaller companies may have fewer security specialists, less money for specialized tools, and less capacity to investigate false positives or tune traffic rules. That is Blackwall’s stated market thesis; it should not be read as evidence that every SMB is equally exposed or that every automated request is malicious.
Bot management is not the same as DDoS protection
A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack is primarily an availability problem: an attacker sends enough traffic or requests to overwhelm a network, server, or application. Layer 7, or application-layer, attacks can consume web-server, database, or application resources even when the network link itself is not saturated.
Bot management tries to classify automated behavior and distinguish harmful automation from legitimate users and crawlers. It may use behavior, request patterns, reputation, fingerprints, and rules. The functions overlap, but DDoS mitigation, a web application firewall (WAF), and bot management are not interchangeable.

What GateKeeper does
Blackwall’s main infrastructure product, GateKeeper, is described as a protective reverse proxy. It sits in front of a website or application, receives incoming traffic, analyzes requests, and forwards legitimate traffic to the origin infrastructure while blocking or mitigating selected threats.
Recommended Free Tools
Blackwall lists capabilities including:
- Bot and hacker detection.
- Layer 7 DDoS mitigation.
- Web application firewall functions.
- Rate limiting and traffic analysis.
- TLS 1.3 and HTTP/3 support.
- Automated SSL certificate management through Let’s Encrypt.
- Caching and compression.
- Health checks and traffic routing.
- API and control-panel integrations.
The company describes two broad deployment approaches in its documentation. Individual websites can use the Blackwall Dashboard for cloud-managed protection. Hosting companies can deploy GateKeeper on their own or provider-side infrastructure while managing it through the Blackwall Dashboard and related APIs.
That distinction matters. A cloud-managed service and a self-hosted or provider-operated reverse proxy create different responsibilities for routing, capacity, certificates, failover, logging, and incident response.
Blackwall’s channel-led business model
Blackwall is primarily pursuing a distribution model through:
- Hosting providers.
- Managed-service providers.
- Cloud and infrastructure platforms.
- E-commerce platforms.
- Companies operating proprietary hosting-control panels.
A partner can provide Blackwall protection as a bundled hosting feature, paid add-on, reseller product, white-label service, or automated option inside a customer portal. Blackwall documents integrations for cPanel/WHM, Plesk, WHMCS, DirectAdmin, and ISPmanager, as well as a Partner API for proprietary panels. Its FAQ also describes cases in which customers use Cloudflare for DDoS protection alongside Blackwall for bot management.

It can also give hosting providers a recurring security product and a way to differentiate their plans.

The trade-off is dependence on the channel. Blackwall’s growth depends on partners selling the service, integrating it correctly, supporting customers, and retaining their hosting relationships. The end customer may also have less direct control over pricing, configuration, escalation, and the explanation of why a request was blocked.
What the funding is intended to finance
Blackwall and its investors said the funding would support product development, hiring, and international expansion. Reported plans included:
- Developing products beyond GateKeeper.
- Continuing work on AI-assisted traffic analysis and security features.
- Doubling the company’s headcount.
- Expanding into the United States and Asia-Pacific.
- Building an ad-fraud-prevention product intended to stop bots from consuming e-commerce advertising spend.
These are stated uses of proceeds and strategic plans, not confirmed outcomes. The available funding coverage does not establish whether Blackwall achieved each goal after the announcement.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What “AI-powered” means in this context
“AI-powered” is not, by itself, a useful measure of a security product. The material describing Blackwall points to a mixture of established techniques, including behavioral analysis, digital fingerprinting, signatures, anomaly-based heuristics, IP reputation, geofencing, request metadata, and custom filtering rules.
The practical questions for a buyer are more specific:
- What traffic and data does the system use to classify requests?
- How are legitimate crawlers, accessibility tools, monitoring systems, and partner APIs protected from false positives?
- Where does analysis occur: at the edge, on provider infrastructure, or in Blackwall’s cloud?
- How quickly can an administrator override, allowlist, or roll back a rule?
- What happens when the system misclassifies a customer or a payment flow?
Dawn Capital’s portfolio page cites a 30% improvement in malicious-activity detection and a 15% to 20% reduction in aftercare costs. Those figures are investor-reported and are not accompanied on that page by a baseline, sample size, methodology, or independent validation. They should therefore be treated as attributed claims rather than general performance benchmarks.

Reported scale at the time of the round
Contemporary reporting said Blackwall had:
- More than 100 hosting and service-provider partners.
- Technology deployed across more than 2.3 million websites and applications.
- A team of approximately 65 people.
- A prior Series A of approximately €12 million in 2024.
These figures were company-reported or publication-reported, not independently audited in the available sources. “Deployed across 2.3 million websites and applications” does not necessarily mean 2.3 million paying customers. It could refer to domains connected through hosting relationships, technically covered sites, or another company-defined measure. The available material does not resolve that distinction.
Operational issues buyers should examine
False positives
Fingerprinting, reputation scores, geolocation, and behavioral rules can block legitimate visitors. Before deployment, a provider should understand allowlisting, rule overrides, rollback, logging, appeals, and emergency support.
TLS termination and data handling
A reverse proxy commonly terminates TLS before inspecting and forwarding traffic. Buyers should establish where traffic is decrypted, what data is retained, how logs are protected, and which party is responsible for certificates and privacy disclosures.
Protecting the origin
A proxy is less effective if attackers can bypass it and connect directly to the origin server. Correct firewall rules, origin access controls, and network architecture are essential.
Control-plane dependency
GateKeeper can run on provider infrastructure, but Blackwall’s documentation describes interaction with the Blackwall Dashboard and API for management. A hosting provider should ask what continues to work during a control-plane or connectivity outage, how policy changes are cached, and how traffic is handled during recovery.
Deployment ambiguity
Blackwall materials describe both DNS-based GateKeeper deployment and older BotGuard website-protection integrations that did not require DNS redirection or proxying. These are not necessarily the same architecture. A buyer should confirm the exact product, traffic path, DNS changes, certificate responsibilities, and rollback procedure.

For technical teams evaluating GateKeeper, the current quick-start documentation specifies a clean Debian 12 or newer installation and package installation through Blackwall’s Debian repository. Installation commands and repository details can change, so production operators should follow the current official documentation rather than copy an old article.
Blackwall compared with larger security platforms
The most useful comparison is by target customer and deployment model, not by counting feature labels.
| Provider | Where it may fit | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Blackwall | Hosting providers, MSPs, cloud platforms, and multi-site operators | Provider-centric, partner-integrated, and potentially self-hosted reverse-proxy model |
| Cloudflare | Organizations seeking a broad self-service edge platform | Large CDN, WAF, DDoS, bot, and edge-security ecosystem; bot-management access varies by account and plan |
| Imperva | Enterprise application and bot security buyers | Enterprise-oriented and commonly quote-led procurement |
| Akamai | Large organizations needing extensive global edge and security infrastructure | Large-scale, enterprise and consultative deployment model |
| Fastly | Developer-led organizations already using its edge platform | Developer-centric edge delivery and security products |
| Sucuri or native hosting tools | Smaller website operators | Potentially simpler website-focused or bundled protection, but not necessarily equivalent to provider-level infrastructure |
Cloudflare’s documentation notes that bot-management availability and entitlement can vary. Imperva and Akamai generally target enterprise security programs, while Fastly is often most attractive when an organization already uses its edge network. Native hosting-provider tools may be cheaper or easier for a small operator but may provide less specialized bot detection and analytics.
Who may benefit from Blackwall?
Blackwall appears most relevant to a hosting provider, MSP, cloud platform, or agency managing many websites that wants to bundle or resell security. It may also suit an operator that needs hosting-panel integration, provider-side enforcement, or a single control layer for many SMB customers.
It may be a weaker fit for a single low-traffic website seeking transparent self-service pricing, a company that already has a mature CDN/WAF/bot-management stack, or a buyer unwilling to operate or support reverse-proxy infrastructure. Blackwall’s GateKeeper page uses dynamic commercial terms rather than publishing a standard list price, so commercial terms should be confirmed directly.
Questions the funding announcement does not answer
- What are Blackwall’s revenue, growth, retention, and gross-margin figures?
- How many of the 2.3 million sites are active paying customers?
- What are the false-positive and false-negative rates?
- How were the reported detection and aftercare improvements measured?
- How much traffic is analyzed locally versus in Blackwall’s cloud?
- What are the service-level commitments and outage procedures?
- How portable are rules, logs, analytics, and customer configurations?
- How much negotiating power do hosting partners have over pricing and support?
- Were the planned U.S. and APAC expansion, hiring, and new products completed?
The round shows investor confidence in a provider-led route to web security. It does not, on its own, prove that Blackwall detects threats better than Cloudflare, Imperva, Akamai, or other established vendors.
