On November 16, 2022, Elon Musk gave Twitter employees roughly one day to decide whether to accept a new, demanding work culture or leave the company. In an email titled “A Fork in the Road,” he said that building “Twitter 2.0” would require “long hours at high intensity” and an “extremely hardcore” approach.

Employees had until 5 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday, November 17 to click an internal confirmation link indicating that they wanted to stay. Musk’s email said that employees who did not opt in would be treated as having left and would receive three months of severance. The episode triggered hundreds of reported departures and later estimates of roughly 1,000 to 1,200—but no authoritative company-wide count was immediately available.

What did Musk ask Twitter employees to do?

The ultimatum was delivered by internal email, not through a public Twitter feature. Employees were asked to confirm electronically that they wanted to remain at the company and help build “Twitter 2.0.”

The message described the expected culture as:

  • “Long hours at high intensity”
  • An “extremely hardcore” work environment
  • A rapid, aggressive approach to product development
  • Less emphasis on work-life balance than many employees had previously expected

The deadline was 5 p.m. Eastern time on November 17, 2022. According to the reported terms, failing to click the confirmation link would be treated as leaving or quitting, with three months of severance offered.

That is why the episode became known as “click yes or leave.” However, the practical arrangement was more specific than the headline suggests: employees were being asked to accept Musk’s new working conditions or take the severance route. It was not an ordinary public firing announcement.

Ars Technica reported the key wording and deadline, while The Guardian reported on the “hardcore” demand.

What did “hardcore” mean in practice?

The email did not establish a precise weekly schedule. It referred to long hours and high intensity, but it did not formally require every employee to work a particular number of hours, such as 100 hours a week.

Reporting connected the ultimatum with a broader management shift that included:

  • Longer and less predictable workdays
  • Aggressive deadlines and rapid product changes
  • Pressure to work nights or weekends in some circumstances
  • Greater expectations around office attendance
  • Reduced work-life balance

The “hardcore” message also came amid Musk’s return-to-office expectations. Those policies should not be treated as identical to the ultimatum, but together they signaled a sharp change from the working arrangements many Twitter employees had experienced before Musk’s takeover.

Why was Twitter already under pressure?

The ultimatum followed a period of extraordinary disruption. Musk completed his approximately $44 billion acquisition of Twitter in late October 2022. In early November, the company cut roughly half of its approximately 7,500-person workforce.

Employees therefore received the new ultimatum after already dealing with:

  • Large-scale layoffs and uncertainty about severance
  • Rapid changes in senior management and company priorities
  • Disputes over remote work and office attendance
  • Pressure surrounding the rollout of paid verification
  • Concerns about the company’s financial and operational direction

For many workers, the decision was not simply whether to work harder. It was whether to place their livelihood and career inside a company that had already undergone major layoffs and policy changes within weeks of a change in ownership.

Contemporary reporting documented the earlier layoffs.

What were the practical choices?

Choice Potential advantages Potential risks
Stay and opt in Continued salary and benefits; the chance to influence Twitter 2.0; possible career upside if the new strategy succeeded Longer hours, intense deadlines, reduced stability, further layoffs, and conflict with personal or professional values
Do not opt in Reportedly three months of severance and a clear exit from an unstable workplace Loss of employment; uncertainty over equity, bonuses and benefits; possible release requirements; visa and immigration consequences

The three-month figure was the reported offer in Musk’s message, not necessarily a complete description of every employee’s final compensation. Individual outcomes could depend on employment agreements, location, equity awards, accrued compensation, benefits, releases and applicable law.

How many employees left?

The precise number was disputed from the start.

  • Initial reports described hundreds of employees choosing to leave.
  • Later reports cited estimates of approximately 1,000 to 1,200 departures.
  • Reuters reported that an authoritative company-wide figure could not immediately be established.
  • A later California filing referred to 204 San Francisco employees among the November 17 departures. That was a location-specific figure, not a global total.

The most accurate summary is that contemporary reports initially described hundreds of departures, while later estimates put the number as high as roughly 1,000 to 1,200. Those estimates should not be presented as a definitive company count.

Sources included Reuters reporting carried by Investing.com, Fortune’s report on the later estimate and the San Francisco Chronicle’s location-specific figure.

Which parts of Twitter were affected?

Reports identified departures across engineering, trust and safety, content moderation, misinformation response, payroll, finance and other teams responsible for maintaining core systems.

The significance was not just the number of people who left. A social platform depends on institutional knowledge: employees who understand legacy code, security processes, infrastructure dependencies, moderation systems, payroll procedures and regulatory obligations. Losing a large share of that knowledge can make the company more fragile even if the service continues operating.

Some reports described certain teams as severely depleted. Claims that an entire department disappeared should be treated as accounts from reporting or unnamed employees rather than independently verified company-wide facts.

What happened after the deadline?

After the November 17 deadline, reports of resignations intensified. Twitter temporarily closed its offices and restricted badge access. Musk then sought to identify employees he considered essential and asked software engineers and other technical workers to meet him at headquarters.

The immediate concerns were operational:

  • Fewer engineers available to respond to outages or security problems
  • Loss of knowledge about critical infrastructure
  • Reduced trust-and-safety and content-moderation capacity
  • Disruption to payroll, finance and internal systems
  • Greater difficulty maintaining advertiser, regulator and user confidence

These were serious resilience risks, but they did not prove that Twitter would immediately stop functioning. Musk publicly argued that strong employees were staying, while contemporary reporting showed substantial uncertainty about staffing levels and the company’s ability to maintain all of its systems normally.

The Guardian covered the office closure, and Ars Technica reported Musk’s effort to find software engineers.

Was the three-month severance legally guaranteed?

Not necessarily. The email reportedly promised three months of severance to employees who did not opt in, but the legal and practical result could depend on the worker’s agreement, location, role and separation documents.

Important questions could include:

  • Whether the worker was classified as having resigned, been terminated or been constructively discharged
  • Whether a release of legal claims was required
  • How equity, bonuses, accrued pay and benefits were handled
  • Whether the employee was covered by a severance plan or contract
  • Whether the employee held a visa tied to employment
  • Whether the promised money was paid on time

Employees on protected leave, employees with disabilities, pregnant employees, caregivers and workers in jurisdictions outside the United States could face additional legal or practical issues. Contractors were also not necessarily covered by the same terms as Twitter employees.

Could the ultimatum raise employment-law issues?

Yes, but “could raise legal questions” is more accurate than saying the policy was definitively illegal.

The federal WARN Act generally requires covered employers to provide 60 days’ notice before certain mass layoffs. California’s WARN law also generally requires 60 days’ notice for covered mass layoffs, relocations or terminations. Earlier Twitter layoffs prompted WARN-related litigation and government filings.

Whether November 17 departures qualified as resignations, terminations or a constructive discharge could affect the analysis. The label used in an email would not automatically resolve the legal question. A three-month severance offer also would not automatically eliminate every potential statutory, contractual, discrimination, disability, leave or wage claim.

The answer depends on facts such as the employee’s location, classification, contract, circumstances of departure and the legal rules applicable to that worker. California’s labor department explains the state WARN requirements. This is general information, not legal advice.

Why the episode mattered beyond Twitter

Musk’s tactic was designed to force rapid alignment. Employees who accepted the new culture stayed; those unwilling or unable to accept it were given a defined exit route. That can produce fast cultural change.

It can also create a damaging selection effect. The people most willing to accept extreme hours are not necessarily the same people who hold the institutional knowledge needed to operate a complex platform safely. A company can reduce its headcount while also losing critical capability in engineering, security, compliance, moderation and finance.

That is the central lesson of the “click yes or leave” episode: aggressive management choices can simplify a workforce on paper while making the underlying organization more difficult to operate. The immediate story was about an ultimatum, but its broader significance was the tension between cultural alignment and operational resilience.
