The easiest reliable way to find an NFT’s metadata is to identify its blockchain, contract address, and token ID, then read the metadata URI from the NFT’s contract. For ERC-721, look up tokenURI(tokenId); for ERC-1155, use uri(tokenId). Open the returned URI to inspect the JSON, then follow its image or animation field to the media.
What NFT metadata includes
Metadata is descriptive information associated with a token. It is usually JSON, and it is not necessarily the image itself. A typical record might look like this:

}name and description identify or describe the NFT; attributes commonly contain its traits; image and animation_url point to media. The exact fields vary by project and marketplace. ERC-721 describes a conventional metadata interface, while OpenSea documents commonly used fields such as attributes and animation URLs (ERC-721; OpenSea metadata standards).

- Collection metadata: information about a collection or its contract, not necessarily an individual token.
- Media asset: the image, video, audio, or interactive file referenced by the JSON.
- Ownership data: the blockchain record of who owns a token.
- Marketplace display: a third-party view that may cache, normalize, or omit source data.
Find the chain, contract address, and token ID
Start from the NFT’s marketplace page and open its Details, Blockchain details, or similarly named panel. Record the blockchain, contract address, token ID, and token standard if shown. The contract address identifies the smart contract; the token ID identifies an individual token within that contract. ERC-721 defines each NFT as a unique ID within its contract (ERC-721).

A collection name alone is not enough: names can be duplicated, spoofed, or used on multiple chains. Make sure the contract address and network correspond to the NFT you mean to inspect.
Use a marketplace page for a quick first look
- Open the NFT’s page.
- Expand the details or blockchain section and copy the chain, contract address, and token ID.
- Check whether the page shows a metadata or storage classification.
- If there is a metadata link, open it and inspect both the URL and the response. Confirm that it shows the JSON record, rather than a marketplace API response, cached representation, or media file.
OpenSea may show classifications such as Fully onchain, Onchain metadata, Decentralized, Centralized, or Unknown. OpenSea says these are programmatically determined and may be inaccurate, so treat them as a clue rather than proof (OpenSea’s explanation of the Metadata field). A marketplace is convenient for finding token details, but its displayed data is not necessarily the contract’s current response.
Verify the URI in a block explorer
For a one-off lookup, a block explorer’s read-only contract interface is usually the clearest way to query the contract. Use an explorer for the NFT’s actual blockchain, not a similarly named network.
For ERC-721: call tokenURI
- Open the contract address on the correct chain’s block explorer.
- Select Contract, then Read Contract (labels can differ by explorer).
- Find
tokenURI, enter the token ID, and choose Query, Read, or the equivalent button. - Copy the returned URI and open or resolve it according to its scheme.
ERC-721 defines tokenURI(uint256) as the token-specific metadata method, but its metadata extension is optional. A contract that does not expose it may use a different approach or no standard metadata interface (ERC-721).

For ERC-1155: call uri
- Open the contract on the correct chain, then go to Contract → Read Contract.
- Find
uri, enter the token ID, and run the read call. - If the returned URI contains
{id}, substitute the token ID using ERC-1155’s specified 64-character, zero-padded hexadecimal format. - Open the resulting URI.
For example, decimal token ID 1 becomes 64 hexadecimal characters with leading zeroes, ending in 1. Do not replace {id} with the ordinary decimal token ID. ERC-1155 defines this URI method and the substitution rules (ERC-1155).
A contract may be unverified, use a proxy, or implement custom metadata logic, leaving the explorer without a usable read method. A token may also be unminted or queried on the wrong chain. In those cases, inspect verified source code or use an API as an indexed cross-check; an indexer is not the same thing as a direct contract read.
Open the returned URI
The URI scheme tells you how to access the metadata. Keep the original URI for reference: a gateway or web URL is a way to retrieve content, not necessarily the URI the contract returned.

curl -L "https://example.com/1.json" | jq .An HTTP endpoint may return JSON through an API whose response can change. Record the exact URI and, when the result matters, compare its response later or against another source.
IPFS
An IPFS URI may look like ipfs://bafybeihExampleCID/1.json. A browser-accessible gateway URL for that example is https://ipfs.io/ipfs/bafybeihExampleCID/1.json. You can fetch it with:
curl -L "https://ipfs.io/ipfs/CID/1.json" | jq .The ipfs:// URI identifies the content; the gateway retrieves it over the web. If one gateway fails or is slow, try another. Gateway availability varies, and the gateway URL is not the underlying IPFS address (Alchemy’s NFT API FAQ).

An Arweave URI may look like ar://transaction-id. To try it in a browser, use a gateway such as https://arweave.net/transaction-id. The gateway retrieves the referenced content; it does not change the identifier or make a claim about who created the NFT.

Data URI or JSON returned directly
A URI beginning data:application/json;base64, contains encoded JSON. You can decode the Base64 portion locally with Python:

PYA data URI can also contain plain JSON, for example data:application/json,{"name":"Example"}. If a contract or service returns a JSON object directly rather than a URL, format or save it as JSON instead of trying to open it as a web address.
Follow the JSON to the NFT’s media
In the JSON, inspect image, image_url, animation_url, media, external_url, and any project-specific fields. Follow the relevant field to see the asset; interactive or animated content may be in animation_url rather than image.
The metadata and its media can use different storage. For example, JSON can be on IPFS while the image is hosted on a centralized server, or an on-chain-generated metadata record can point to externally served media. “On-chain metadata” does not by itself mean that the image bytes are on-chain. OpenSea distinguishes “Fully onchain” from “Onchain metadata” in its classifications (OpenSea’s Metadata field guide).

Use an API for many NFTs
For one NFT, manually reading the contract is usually simpler. For repeated or bulk lookups, an NFT API can save time, but it returns an indexed representation that may be normalized or cached. Compare raw URI and metadata fields with the contract when you need to investigate a discrepancy.
OpenSea API
OpenSea documents this endpoint for a specific NFT:

Alchemy NFT API
Alchemy’s getNFTMetadata endpoint supports ERC-721 and ERC-1155 lookups on Ethereum and supported networks. Its response includes normalized fields and raw values such as tokenUri and raw metadata. For verification, inspect both rather than relying only on normalized display fields (Alchemy getNFTMetadata endpoint; Alchemy NFT API overview).

For a recently minted NFT, an indexer may not have caught up. Alchemy also notes that token IDs and metadata fields are not always recognized or populated uniformly (Alchemy NFT API FAQ).
Assess where the metadata lives and whether it can change
Distinguish four cases: a contract stores or returns a URI; metadata values are stored or generated on-chain; media bytes are also on-chain; or an on-chain pointer refers to off-chain metadata or media. A contract that returns an IPFS or HTTP link may only store a pointer on-chain.
- HTTP/API URI: The server can return a different response later. Check whether the contract owner can change the URI or base URI.
- IPFS CID: The content identifier is based on content, so changing the content changes its identifier. That helps detect alteration of the referenced content, but does not prove the project will keep it available. Content must remain accessible through a reachable node or pinning service, and the contract may still be able to point elsewhere.
- On-chain data URI or generated JSON: This can indicate metadata embedded in or constructed from blockchain data. Check whether the media itself is also embedded; a JSON field can still point off-chain.
- Reveal or proxy system: The URI or its response may be designed to change. Inspect contract permissions and the project’s reveal state before describing the metadata as immutable.
OpenSea describes centralized metadata as served from traditional web servers and uses “Unknown” when it cannot determine the storage method. Its classification is a programmatic assessment, not a guarantee (OpenSea’s Metadata field guide). A fixed CID does not prove that the creator is legitimate or that the NFT is authentic.

Check authenticity safely
- Verify the contract address against the creator’s official channels and the original mint information.
- Never connect a wallet just to inspect public metadata, and do not sign a transaction to “unlock” it.
- Treat unexpected downloads, executable files, and wallet prompts as suspicious.
- Remember that metadata describes a token; it does not by itself prove ownership, authenticity, copyright, or value.
