These offers are not interchangeable. A $300 markdown on an unnecessary 1TB cellular tablet is not automatically a better deal than a $100 discount on the right Wi-Fi model.

What “up to $1,000 off” actually means
“Up to” language usually describes the maximum possible value under a narrow set of conditions, not the amount every shopper receives at checkout. The claim may combine several different forms of value:
- Instant discount: money removed from the purchase price immediately.
- Trade-in credit: conditional value received only if an eligible old device passes the retailer’s assessment.
- Gift card or store credit: future purchasing power, not cash back on the iPad order.
- Membership savings: a discount that may require a paid or qualifying membership.

Apple: the cleanest price baseline
Apple’s direct store is useful for establishing the current comparable price and for shoppers who value Apple trade-in, education pricing, financing, engraving, AppleCare+, or Certified Refurbished inventory. Apple says its Certified Refurbished products include a one-year warranty.
Apple is not necessarily the cheapest source for a new, factory-sealed iPad. Its main advantage is a straightforward configuration, direct support, and clearly defined warranty and return arrangements.
Best Buy: strongest for sale, open-box, and trade-in comparisons
Best Buy’s iPad deal page advertised up to $300 off select iPads and up to $500 in qualifying trade-in value in the snapshot. It also showed a 13-inch iPad Air M3, 128GB, at $749 versus $799, plus certain 1TB cellular Air configurations at $949 versus $1,249.

Best Buy can be particularly useful for clearance, open-box inventory, pickup, and trade-in comparisons. However, some of the larger apparent markdowns were unavailable or sold out. Do not cite or rely on a listing until the exact configuration can be added to the cart or reserved for pickup.

Target: useful when pickup or card rewards matter
Target’s iPad deal pages showed some A16 listings around $426.99 to $449.99 and M4 iPad Air listings beginning around $699.99, depending on configuration. Target also advertised 5% savings on Apple devices for Target Circle Card users, along with shipping, store pickup, and Drive Up options.
Target’s pages produced varying starting prices and ranges across crawls. Treat those figures as signals to inspect a particular listing, not as guaranteed prices for every storage or connectivity option. Local inventory can also determine whether pickup is available.
Amazon and Walmart: compare only after seller verification
Amazon and Walmart may offer short-lived price drops, delivery convenience, pickup, or clearance inventory. The research snapshot does not establish a specific current offer from either retailer, so no particular price should be treated as verified here.
On either marketplace, check:
- Who the item is sold by and who fulfills it.
- Whether it is new, renewed, refurbished, used, imported, or carrier-locked.
- U.S. warranty eligibility and Apple service support.
- The seller’s return policy.
- The exact generation, storage, color, screen size, and Wi-Fi or cellular status.
Costco, Sam’s Club, and B&H
Costco may be worthwhile for members if its price, return terms, or bundle outweigh the membership cost. It may be less useful if the desired configuration is unavailable. Sam’s Club can be evaluated using the same membership-versus-savings calculation.

How to calculate the real cost
Use this comparison rather than the largest promotional number:
Effective cost = checkout price
− instant discount
− store-credit value you will actually use
− realistic trade-in credit
+ required membership fee
+ required financing or accessory cost
+ unavoidable feesDo not subtract the full advertised trade-in amount unless you have a qualifying device and the retailer has confirmed its likely value. Do not treat a gift card as cash if you would not otherwise shop at that retailer. Include sales tax when comparing the amount charged to your budget, although tax treatment can vary by location and promotion.

Trade-in math: how to avoid losing the headline credit
A trade-in can make a good deal better, but the quoted maximum is not guaranteed. Credit can be reduced or denied because of cracked glass, battery or charging problems, water damage, Activation Lock, an incorrect model identification, a missing serial number, or a mismatch between your online description and the device’s final inspection. Missing a shipping deadline can also affect the offer.

Before sending an old iPad:
- Back up your data.
- Sign out of your Apple Account and disable Find My.
- Erase all content and settings.
- Photograph the screen, body, serial number, and accessories.
- Record the trade-in quote, deadline, and shipment tracking information.
- Package the device carefully and keep the receipt until the credit is finalized.
Compare the trade-in offer with the resale value you could realistically obtain elsewhere, accounting for fees, shipping, fraud risk, and the time required to sell privately.
Open-box and refurbished iPads
Open-box inventory can offer genuine savings, but it is not equivalent to a new device. Check for cosmetic wear, missing packaging or chargers, non-original accessories, battery-health uncertainty, AppleCare+ eligibility, the return window, and the store’s warranty.
Apple Certified Refurbished is a separate category from retailer open-box, used, renewed, or retailer-certified products. Apple states that its refurbished products carry a one-year warranty. Read the specific terms instead of assuming every “refurbished” label has the same testing or coverage.
Do not mistake financing for a discount
A lower monthly payment does not prove that the iPad costs less. Check the total amount paid, APR, number of payments, required card or account, promotional-period conditions, and consequences of late payment. Promotional financing can be useful for cash-flow management, but it should be compared as financing—not advertised as a price reduction unless the total repayment is actually lower.
Accessories can erase the savings
Budget for the complete setup, not just the tablet. Depending on the buyer, the final cost may include an Apple Pencil, keyboard case, protective case, screen protector, AppleCare+, and cellular service. A discounted iPad that requires expensive add-ons may cost more than a better-equipped bundle with a smaller headline markdown.
