Yes, a one-time Office purchase can cost less than Microsoft 365 over time—but the old $29.97 “lifetime” Office 2019 deal is a dated promotion, not a verified current offer. For U.S. buyers, Microsoft’s current official alternative is Office Home 2024 at $179.99. It gives one person classic Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote on one PC or Mac, but it does not include Outlook, OneDrive storage or future major-version upgrades. Prices below were checked August 18, 2026.
What the “lifetime Office license” deal actually was
The headline phrase refers to a New Atlas deal post published March 31, 2025. It promoted a Windows download of Office 2019 for $29.97, described as discounted from $229. The listing said it included Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Access and Publisher, and was associated with one device; upgrading to a new computer could mean buying again. That was a specific older product and promotion, not Microsoft’s current Office offer. The deal page does not establish that the price or offer is still available in August 2026. Microsoft’s official one-time-purchase product is now Office Home 2024. “Lifetime” is usually marketing shorthand for a perpetual license to a particular version—not a promise of every future Office release, unlimited devices or indefinite security support. Microsoft says Office Home 2024 does not have an upgrade option to a future major version; that version would need to be purchased separately.

Office Home 2024: what $179.99 buys
Microsoft’s U.S. Store listed Office Home 2024 at $179.99 on August 18, 2026. It includes classic desktop Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote for one PC or Mac, and is licensed for noncommercial use. The product page lists Windows 10 or 11 and macOS compatibility. Installation and activation require an internet connection; once installed, the desktop apps can generally be used offline.

It does not include desktop Outlook, 1 TB of OneDrive storage, Microsoft Defender subscription benefits, family sharing, subscription cloud services or continuing feature additions. It also does not grant a free upgrade to the next major Office release. If you need Outlook or commercial-use rights but still prefer a one-time purchase, check Microsoft’s Office Home & Business 2024 page for current terms and price; do not assume Office Home 2024 covers business use.
Office Home 2024 is designed for one PC or Mac, not a succession of unlimited computers. Before buying, read the current license terms and confirm how they address replacing a device. “Lifetime” does not itself establish that a license can be moved freely. Microsoft lists system requirements on its system requirements page; check it before purchase, particularly if the computer is older.

When does the one-time purchase break even?
Using the listed annual prices, $179.99 for Office Home 2024 equals about 1.8 years of Microsoft 365 Personal ($179.99 ÷ $99.99) or 1.4 years of Microsoft 365 Family ($179.99 ÷ $129.99). That is a simple cash comparison, not proof that Office Home is a better value: Family may serve multiple people, while Office Home covers one device and lacks cloud storage and other subscription services.

Before canceling a subscription, account for files stored only in OneDrive: download or synchronize anything you need locally, and check how the change affects storage and access. An installed Office app working offline does not mean cloud-stored files or cloud collaboration will also be available offline.

Check for a Microsoft 365 Classic plan before switching
Some current subscribers may be offered Microsoft 365 Personal Classic or Family Classic, but availability depends on factors such as account, region, eligibility and billing partner. Do not assume the option is available to every subscriber or new customer.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account associated with the subscription and open Services & subscriptions.
- Find the plan, select Manage, then follow the cancellation or plan-change options shown. Microsoft’s switching instructions describe choosing a lower-feature plan if one is offered.
- Check the renewal date and save a record of the displayed plan, price and renewal terms. Read the confirmation carefully: access may continue until renewal, and Microsoft says a new plan is not charged until the switch occurs.
If you bought through Apple, Google Play or another billing partner, that company may control subscription changes and may not offer the same options. Manage the plan through the seller that bills you. Do not treat clicking “Cancel subscription” as an instruction to immediately remove apps or files; follow the on-screen terms and verify the effective date.

Which option fits your situation?
- One person, one computer, basic Office apps: Office Home 2024 can make sense if you do not need Outlook or cloud storage and expect to keep that Office generation for several years.
- You need Outlook or commercial-use rights: Compare Microsoft 365 Personal with Office Home & Business 2024. Check the latter’s current U.S. price and license terms rather than assuming Home 2024 includes those rights.
- You use several devices or want 1 TB of storage: Microsoft 365 Personal is the closer fit, even if its recurring cost is higher.
- Several people in your household use Office: Microsoft 365 Family can spread the cost across users. Comparing its full price with a single-user, single-device license is misleading.
- You want neither a subscription nor a paid key: LibreOffice is free and works locally. It may not preserve complex Excel workbooks, macros, advanced PowerPoint layouts, specialized fonts or Microsoft-specific features perfectly. Test important files before switching.
- You run a business: Do not buy Office Home 2024 for commercial work; review Home & Business or appropriate commercial licensing.
How to avoid a bad “lifetime” key
A very low price does not prove that an Office key is genuine, properly licensed or durable. Marketplace keys can be intended for volume, education, enterprise or another region, may have already been redeemed, or may be tied to a particular device or account. A seller’s use of “lifetime” does not settle whether the key is transferable or whether Microsoft will continue to recognize it.
Before paying, verify the seller’s identity and authorization, exact Office edition, Windows or Mac compatibility, region, number of devices, personal or commercial rights, redemption method and refund policy. Prefer a purchase that produces a normal Microsoft account entitlement rather than access credentials for an account controlled by someone else. Do not rely on a screenshot of a working app as proof of a valid license.
How to install a legitimate one-time purchase
- Buy from Microsoft or a retailer whose identity and terms you can verify.
- Use or create the Microsoft account that will own the license. If you received a product key, redeem it only through Microsoft’s Office setup page.
- Open your Microsoft account’s Services & subscriptions page, find Office and select the install option.
- Install the apps, open one and sign in with the purchasing account. Confirm the product appears as activated.
If redemption fails, the key may already be used, region-restricted, intended for a different operating system or edition, or improperly sourced. Keep the receipt, order number, key and seller correspondence. Contact the seller first; contact Microsoft Support if the seller claims the license is genuine but activation fails. If the seller will not resolve it, seek a refund through your payment provider. Never download activation tools, cracks or unofficial installers.

Bottom line
The old $29.97 Office 2019 promotion is not a current, verified bargain to budget around. For a legitimate one-time purchase, Office Home 2024 is the straightforward option when one person needs classic Office apps on one computer and can live without Outlook, OneDrive and future-version upgrades. If you value multi-device access, storage, Outlook, family sharing or ongoing features, Microsoft 365 may justify its recurring price; check for a Classic option in your own account before switching.
