Cheap Windows keys can activate Windows, but activation alone does not prove that the key is genuine, properly licensed, transferable or dependable long term. Microsoft says activation associates a product key or digital licence with a device’s hardware configuration; it does not evaluate whether the copy is authentic or guarantee that Windows is genuine.
The key question is not simply whether a discounted code works today. It is whether the seller can show what type of licence it is, where it came from, and what rights you receive if you replace your motherboard or move to another PC.
What you are actually buying
A Windows purchase involves several related but different things:

- Product key: a 25-character code used to activate an edition of Windows.
- Digital licence: an entitlement associated with a device, sometimes linked to a Microsoft account.
- Activation: Microsoft’s technical process for accepting a key or digital entitlement on a particular device.
- Validation: checks related to whether the Windows installation meets licensing requirements.
- Licence rights: the legal and contractual terms governing use, transfer and support.
- Installation media: the files used to install Windows, which are separate from proof that you own a valid licence.
A key can pass activation without proving that the seller had the right to resell it. That is why “activated” and “properly licensed” should not be treated as synonyms.

OEM vs. retail Windows licences

Microsoft’s OEM terms generally tie preinstalled Windows to the licensed device. Retail terms generally allow transfer to another device after removal from the previous one, but the exact terms depend on the edition, market and purchase route. Do not rely on a marketplace listing’s use of the words “OEM” or “retail” without documentation.
Microsoft’s Product Terms and applicable Windows licence terms should control the decision.
Why are some Windows keys so cheap?
A low price does not identify the source by itself. A discounted code may be legitimate, improperly resold, already overused or completely invalid. Common possibilities include:
Legitimate OEM supply
An OEM key may be genuine but intended to remain with a particular computer. It can be a reasonable choice when supplied with a new or refurbished PC and when you do not expect to transfer the licence later. An isolated “OEM key” sold independently of the original computer is not automatically equivalent to a transferable retail licence.
Resold volume keys
Volume licensing is designed for organisations with qualifying agreements. A volume key may activate Windows on a consumer PC, but that does not establish that the buyer is entitled to use it.
Be cautious if a listing mentions KMS, MAK, enterprise, education, datacenter or “volume licence,” particularly when it is offered in unlimited quantities to individuals. KMS is a legitimate business activation method in the right organisational setting; the problem is unauthorised consumer resale or use outside that agreement.

A genuine key may have been activated on too many devices, supplied to several customers or blocked after misuse. Microsoft documents activation errors including 0xC004C008, 0xC004C770 and 0x803FA071 in situations involving previous use or activation limits.
Fraudulent or invalid keys
Some keys may have been obtained through fraud, compromised accounts or other unauthorised sources. A key might initially activate and later be rejected if its source or use is identified as invalid. The buyer generally cannot establish provenance from the code alone.

Unofficial activation methods
The greatest security risk often comes not from the code itself but from what the seller asks you to install or run. Avoid instructions to download modified ISO files, disable Defender, run unknown PowerShell or batch scripts, use KMS emulators, install remote-access software or provide Microsoft account credentials.
A normal product key should be entered through Windows Setup or Settings > System > Activation > Change product key. Microsoft documents this standard process in its activation guidance.
What activation proves—and what it does not
Activation can show that:
- Windows accepted a key or digital entitlement for the installed edition and device configuration.
- The system is currently activated.
- A hardware change or reinstallation may require activation again.
- A key may have reached its permitted activation count.
Activation cannot prove that:
- The seller had the right to sell the licence.
- The key is retail rather than OEM or volume.
- The licence can be transferred to another PC.
- The key was not obtained fraudulently.
- Microsoft will never block or reject it.
- The installation media is genuine.
- The seller will provide a refund.
- The licence is suitable for commercial use.
Microsoft explicitly separates activation from authenticity. Therefore, “it activated” is evidence of a technical result—not proof of ownership or lawful resale rights.
Check whether you already have a Windows licence
Before buying any key, check the PC you intend to use:
- Open Start.
- Go to Settings > System > Activation.
- Record whether Windows is activated, which edition is installed, and whether the digital licence is linked to a Microsoft account.
You may not have a visible 25-character key. A device can have a valid digital licence that reactivates after reinstalling the same edition. Microsoft says linking that licence to a Microsoft account can help with reactivation after significant hardware changes, but account linkage does not turn an OEM licence into a retail licence.
If the PC is already activated and you are reinstalling Windows on the same device, you can normally choose “I don’t have a product key” during Setup, install the same edition and connect to the internet afterward.
Match the Windows edition
Windows 11 Home and Pro are different editions. A Home key does not provide a Pro licence. If Home is installed and you need Pro, use an appropriate Pro upgrade or full Pro licence.
Check the edition in Settings > System > Activation, with winver, or by running:
DISM /Online /Get-CurrentEditionBuying Pro merely because a marketplace listing calls it “better” is not good value if you only need Home features.

Questions to ask a seller
Before paying, ask:
- Is this OEM, retail/FPP, volume, MAK or KMS?
- Which country or market issued the licence?
- Is it a full licence or an upgrade licence?
- Can it legally be transferred to another PC?
- What proof of licence or purchase is supplied?
- Is the seller an authorised Microsoft reseller?
- What happens if Microsoft later rejects or blocks the key?
- How long does the refund period last?
- Does the purchase include official installation media, or only a code?
“100% genuine lifetime activation” is a marketing claim, not proof of a transferable retail licence. A seller who cannot identify the licence channel or provide credible documentation is asking you to accept the risk without evidence.
Useful diagnostic commands
These commands help document the current activation state, but they do not prove lawful ownership or a complete chain of title. Open Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator:
slmgr /xprThis reports whether activation is permanent or has an expiry date.
slmgr /dlvThis displays detailed licensing information. Depending on the licence, you may see labels such as RETAIL, OEM_DM, OEM_COA, VOLUME_KMSCLIENT or VOLUME_MAK. Treat these as indicators of an activation channel, not proof that the seller had resale rights.
What happens after purchase?
Immediate activation
The key may activate normally if the edition matches and the key has not exceeded its permitted use. That is useful, but it does not answer the provenance or transferability questions.

Delayed failure
Activation can disappear later after a validation issue, hardware change, key block or licensing conflict. Keep the invoice, listing, seller correspondence and payment records. A short refund window makes a questionable key especially risky.
Motherboard replacement
A major motherboard replacement can change the device’s hardware identity and trigger reactivation. Run the Activation troubleshooter and sign in to the Microsoft account associated with the digital licence where appropriate.
An OEM licence generally remains tied to the original licensed device. A manufacturer’s replacement motherboard may be treated differently from a user-installed replacement, so do not assume every motherboard swap preserves the same rights. For a custom-built PC likely to receive major upgrades, retail is the safer choice.
Reinstallation
Before wiping the drive, confirm activation and edition, link the digital licence where appropriate, reinstall the same edition, select “I don’t have a product key” if prompted, and check Settings > System > Activation after connecting to the internet.

Used and refurbished PCs
A second-hand PC can appear activated even when its licence documentation is missing or its key has been reused elsewhere. Microsoft says the refurbisher—not Microsoft—is responsible for supplying the product key for a refurbished PC.
Ask for the refurbisher’s invoice, proof of licence, applicable Certificate of Authenticity or other licence documentation, and a written return or activation guarantee.

Non-genuine Windows does not necessarily become immediately unusable. Microsoft says critical security updates may still be available, while some updates and benefits may be limited. That is not a substitute for holding a properly documented licence.
When an OEM licence makes sense
OEM is not inherently fake or bad. It can be appropriate when:

- You expect the licence to remain with that computer.
- The price reflects an OEM licence rather than an implausibly cheap standalone “retail” offer.
- You accept narrower transfer and support rights.
For a fixed PC, a properly sourced OEM licence may be all you need. The warning is against treating a detached marketplace code as if it automatically carried retail rights.
When retail is worth paying for
A retail licence is usually the better fit when you:
- Build your own PC.
- Expect to replace the motherboard or move to a future system.
- Want clearer documentation and a more dependable purchase trail.
- Need transferability under the applicable licence terms.
- Use the computer for work, business, school or client projects.
Retail does not mean unlimited simultaneous use. It generally means the licence may be transferred under its terms, normally after removal from the old device, and one installation at a time.
Safer low-cost alternatives
- Use an existing digital licence. Check Activation before buying another key. Reinstalling the same edition on the same device may reactivate automatically.
- Buy a PC with Windows preinstalled. The cost is included in the computer price, and the manufacturer or refurbisher should provide the relevant proof of licence.
- Buy Windows through Microsoft or an authorised retailer. This costs more than a questionable marketplace code but gives you a clearer purchase record and support route.
- Upgrade Home to Pro only when needed. On an activated Home installation, the official route is Settings > System > Activation > Go to Store.
- Consider Linux if your software supports it. This can avoid a Windows licence cost, but compatibility with Windows-only software, games, drivers and workflows must be checked first.
Official US prices
As observed in the US Microsoft Store in August 2026, Windows 11 Home was listed at $139.00 and Windows 11 Pro at $199.99. Prices, availability and configurations can change.
Those prices are relevant to US buyers and should not be generalized to other countries. Also check whether the PC already has a valid licence before paying for a new one.
Bottom line
Cheap Windows keys sometimes work, but buyers should treat activation as a technical result, not proof of ownership. For a fixed PC, a properly sourced OEM licence may be sufficient. For a custom PC or anyone who wants transferability, buy a retail licence from Microsoft or an authorised retailer. Avoid keys that require scripts, KMS tools, unofficial downloads or unverifiable claims about “lifetime” retail rights.
