No—AirTags do not require a monthly or annual subscription. You buy the tracker once and use Apple’s Find My network without an AirTag fee. You may still pay for a replacement battery or an optional holder, and you need a compatible Apple device and internet access to use it as intended.
How much does an AirTag cost?
For the United States, Apple lists the second-generation AirTag at $29 for one or $99 for a four-pack. Apple offers free personalized engraving when you order through Apple.com or the Apple Store app. Its FineWoven Key Ring is an optional $35 accessory; other holders are available from Apple and third parties. These prices are U.S. prices and may change or vary with tax, retailer, or promotion. Apple’s 2026 announcement gives the launch pricing and accessory details.
The tracker has no built-in key-ring hole, so a holder may be useful depending on what you want to attach it to. A holder, sales tax, or shipping can raise the checkout total, but none is a recurring AirTag charge.

Apple’s current second-generation model requires an iPhone with iOS 26.0 or later, or an iPad with iPadOS 26.0 or later, and an Apple Account. Find My is the service used to locate the item. A paid iCloud+ storage plan is not required just to use an AirTag. Check Apple’s technical specifications for the current requirements.

Your iPhone or iPad also needs internet access, through Wi-Fi or its existing mobile-data plan, to communicate with Find My. That is ordinary connectivity for your Apple device—not a separate cellular plan for the AirTag.

Apple specifies a replaceable CR2032 coin-cell battery. Replacing it is an occasional ownership expense, not a subscription. Apple’s battery and product guidance has the current model details.

How can it find an item without a subscription?
An AirTag is not a cellular GPS tracker. It uses Bluetooth to communicate at close range; supported devices can use Ultra Wideband features for Precision Finding. When the tag is out of your device’s range, nearby Apple devices can relay an encrypted location report through the Find My network, which you can view in the Find My app. The second-generation AirTag also includes NFC for Lost Mode information.

In a busy airport or city, nearby devices may help; in an isolated area, the last reported location may stay unchanged. An AirTag is not a guaranteed live-location beacon, and it does not transmit its own position over a cellular connection.

Can you share an AirTag without paying extra?
Yes. Apple currently allows an owner to share an AirTag with up to five borrowers, for six users total, without an AirTag subscription. Sharing is not the same as transferring ownership, and participants must meet Apple’s account, security, and operating-system requirements. See Apple’s sharing instructions for current conditions.
Does AirTag work with Android?
AirTag setup and ordinary owner-side tracking are designed for Apple devices and Find My, not Android. Android phones can help detect an unknown tracker in certain unwanted-tracking situations or read Lost Mode details by NFC, but those functions do not make an Android phone a full AirTag owner device. If you primarily use Android, compare a cross-platform tracker such as Tile and verify its current device compatibility before buying.

AirTag versus trackers with paid plans
AirTag’s economics suit someone who already has a compatible iPhone and mainly wants to find belongings. Tile also offers basic functionality without requiring Premium, while its U.S. Premium plan is listed at $2.99 monthly or $29.99 yearly; Premium Protect is listed at $99.99 for one year. Those are optional Tile services, not AirTag costs. Check Life360’s Tile pricing information for current rates and plan terms.

A cellular GPS tracker or a family-safety service may make more sense if you need frequent location updates, safety alerts, or monitoring beyond finding objects—but those services may have separate recurring fees. Compare what each plan actually provides rather than assuming that an item finder and a live-tracking service do the same job.

When an AirTag may be the wrong purchase
- You use Android only: AirTag is not a full Android tracking solution, and the cost of buying compatible Apple hardware could outweigh its no-subscription advantage.
- You need continuous or independent tracking: AirTag depends on nearby Apple devices for remote location reports and does not have its own cellular service.
- You are tracking a person, pet, or vehicle for safety: AirTag is designed to help locate belongings, not provide guaranteed monitoring or emergency response. Anti-unwanted-tracking protections can also alert someone to an AirTag traveling with them.
- The item will be in a remote area: Sparse nearby Apple devices can mean fewer location updates.
For keys, luggage, bags, or other belongings—and for an iPhone owner who wants to avoid a tracker subscription—the second-generation AirTag is a straightforward one-time hardware purchase. Its main trade-off is that no subscription does not mean no requirements: you need Apple hardware, Find My access, and a network that can help report the tag’s location.
