It grew out of a viral travel tactic: find a hotel or rental on a marketplace, use its photos or details to locate the property’s website, then see whether booking there costs less. Directo can make that search faster, but it does not guarantee the lowest price—and the booking route affects who handles your reservation, payment and support.
The TikTok travel hack behind Directo
The original trick was simple: find a hotel, villa or apartment on a large travel platform, then use a reverse-image search, the property name, its address or distinctive details to find its own website. Compare the direct rate with the marketplace listing and book direct only if the total price and terms are genuinely better.
That last comparison matters. A lower nightly rate can come with taxes, resort or cleaning fees, a stricter cancellation policy, advance payment or a different room or rental unit. Compare the final total for the same dates, occupancy and accommodation, not just the first price shown. The potential savings can add up on an expensive or extended stay, but there is no guarantee that a direct rate will beat a platform offer.
Directo was built to automate the discovery step. When it launched, it was described as an extension that could identify properties available through direct-booking websites. The original idea was reported by TechCrunch in June 2024. Its current product is broader than that launch-era description.

What Directo does now
On supported travel and accommodation pages, Directo may display a yellow “D” indicator for a property it has found elsewhere. Opening the comparison can show direct prices, alternative booking options and, when available, a negotiated “Directo Deal.” Directo says its extension covers more than 2.4 million hotels and vacation rentals; that is the figure in its Chrome Web Store listing, not an independently audited inventory count.
There are three distinct ways a result may be booked:
- Direct with the property: The link takes you to the hotel or accommodation operator’s own website. The property generally handles the reservation and related support.
- Through another booking platform: You complete the reservation with that provider, whose terms and support process apply.
- Through a Directo Deal: Directo describes these as special rates negotiated with partners. The booking takes place through its partner-powered interface at
secure.getdirecto.com; a partner handles the reservation and payment process.
So “Directo found a deal” does not necessarily mean “you are booking directly with the hotel.” Check which provider will take payment and issue your confirmation before proceeding. Directo’s How it works page explains the different routes and says support depends on where the booking is made.
How to install and use the extension
Directo is primarily a desktop browser tool. Its FAQ says it works with Chromium-based browsers that support Chrome extensions, including Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Brave and Opera. The Chrome Web Store offers the extension for desktop installation.

- Open the Directo listing in the Chrome Web Store on your computer.
- Select the installation control shown by your browser—Chrome may label it “Add to Chrome”—and confirm the browser prompt.
- Open the browser’s Extensions menu, usually shown by a puzzle-piece icon, and use the pin control to keep Directo on the toolbar.
- Visit a supported travel or accommodation site, search for a property and look for the yellow Directo “D.” Open the comparison options and review the available booking routes.
- Before paying, compare the complete price and terms for the same dates, occupancy and room or unit. Save the final confirmation and the relevant cancellation and support details.
If the icon does not appear, Directo says possible reasons include the extension being disabled, the property lacking an official website, or no alternative deal being available. Check that the extension is installed and enabled, then try another property. Directo recommends desktop for the full experience; it says it is not a full mobile app, though an iPhone Safari beta is available.
Does Directo actually save money?
It can surface a cheaper option or save you the time of finding a property’s other booking channels. But the available product descriptions do not establish an average saving or show how often a Directo result beats an online travel agency (OTA). Treat the comparison as a lead to verify, not a promise that you will pay less.
Use this checklist to judge whether an apparent saving is real:
- Compare final totals. Include taxes, resort or destination fees, cleaning and service fees, booking charges, deposits and any payment-processing or currency-conversion costs. Follow the quote far enough to see the amount due before committing.
- Match the accommodation. Confirm the dates, number of guests, room or unit category, bed arrangement and availability for the entire stay. Similar photos or names do not prove that two listings represent the same room or rental.
- Match the rate conditions. Check refundability, cancellation deadlines, payment timing, breakfast and other inclusions, occupancy rules and any loyalty benefits. A cheaper prepaid, nonrefundable rate is not equivalent to a flexible one.
- Check what happens if plans change. Identify who handles amendments, refunds and customer support—the property, an OTA or a Directo partner. A modest saving may not justify giving up a more useful cancellation policy or familiar support channel.
- Recheck at checkout. Rates and availability can change between the comparison panel and payment. The final booking details and confirmation—not the initial displayed price—are what matter.
Properties may price-match platforms, offer an OTA-only promotion or set aside inventory for one channel. Conversely, a direct booking may offer a property-specific perk or avoid some intermediary charges. Neither outcome is automatic, and a direct site can still charge its own fees.

Is booking direct safer?
Not by default. Finding a property’s own website does not establish that the site is legitimate, and an extension’s screening or comparison features are not a guarantee of safety or service. Directo says it seeks professional inventory and trusted partners, but that should not be read as a universal consumer-protection guarantee for every property or booking option.
Before entering payment details, check that the domain is spelled correctly and uses HTTPS; compare the property’s address and contact information with independent sources; and look for the legal business identity, cancellation and refund terms, total price and payment timing. Confirm who will send the reservation confirmation and who you must contact if the booking needs to change. Keep a copy of the price, policy and confirmation.
Booking through a major marketplace may provide a more familiar centralized account or support process, while a direct booking may send you to the property for help. A Directo Deal has its own partner-powered route. The right trade-off depends on the trip: a well-reviewed, established hotel or a repeat stay may be easier to assess than an unfamiliar overseas operator, a complex itinerary or a nonrefundable last-minute booking. Travelers who need a single platform to mediate problems should weigh that support preference against any price difference.

Directo says the extension is free for travelers and does not require an account. Its Chrome Web Store listing discloses that it may receive affiliate commissions from purchases made through extension links. That is relevant context when reviewing recommendations, although the disclosure alone does not show that results are ranked unfairly.

The 2024 launch coverage described a hotel-subscription model in which properties could pay to improve their connectivity with Directo and promote offers. Current public materials also describe affiliate-linked bookings and partner-powered Directo Deals, so the launch-era description should not be treated as the company’s sole current revenue model.
What changed since the 2024 launch?
Directo’s launch story centered on finding a property’s own booking website. By August 2026, its product materials described comparisons across direct, third-party and negotiated options. The live store listing reported version 2.102.4, updated August 12, 2026, 300,000 users and a 4.5 rating from 344 ratings. These are store figures observed at that time, not launch metrics or an independent assessment of performance.
The same listing shows seven languages for the extension, while Directo’s FAQ says five. Because the company’s pages differ, it is safest to check the current store listing for the languages available in the extension rather than assume a single figure covers every product surface.
For historical context, the June 2024 TechCrunch report said Directo had 115,000 users in testing, a database representing nearly 200,000 hospitality brands and millions of properties and rooms, and $1 million in pre-seed funding from investors including Kima Ventures, Calafia, Derive Ventures and travel-industry angels. Those are launch-era reported figures and should not be conflated with the later store listing.
Who is Directo useful for?
Directo may be worthwhile for desktop users who frequently book hotels or rentals and are willing to compare the terms behind a price. Its discovery layer may be especially convenient for longer or higher-cost stays, where a verified difference in the total could matter. It is less compelling if you book mainly on a phone, do not want to install an extension, or prefer all bookings and support to remain within one major OTA.
For any booking, decide based on the final price, matched conditions and the identity of the party responsible for the reservation—not the presence of a badge or the word “deal.”
