Dell confirmed on September 20, 2024, that its security team was investigating claims that a hacker had exposed information allegedly tied to more than 10,000 Dell employees and partners. The reported data included names, unique identifiers, employment status and an internal identification string. Dell did not confirm that a breach occurred, that the sample was authentic, or that more than 10,000 people were affected.
The allegation should also be kept separate from Dell’s distinct May 2024 customer-data incident. The available reporting does not establish that the two events involved the same attacker, system, data or intrusion.
What Dell confirmed
Dell’s public response was narrowly worded: it said, “We are aware of the claims and our security team is currently investigating.” The statement, reported by BleepingComputer, confirms an investigation—not a successful intrusion or a verified data breach.

Dell did not publicly confirm the authenticity of the alleged database, the number of affected people, the attack method, the identity of the attacker or whether the people listed were current employees. The group described as “more than 10,000” may have included partners, contractors or former employees.

What the hacker claimed
A threat actor using the name “grep” reportedly claimed around September 19, 2024, that a “minor data breach” had exposed internal information relating to more than 10,000 people. Security-industry reporting from Check Point and a later security bulletin said a small sample was posted or offered for free on a hacking forum.
The alleged full database was reportedly offered using one BreachForums credit, said to be worth about $0.30 at the time. A low asking price, a forum post or a free sample does not prove that the complete dataset was genuine, complete or obtained from Dell. This article does not reproduce employee records or link to stolen data.
What information was allegedly exposed?
Reports identified these alleged fields:
- Full names of employees or partners
- Unique identifiers
- Employment status, such as active or inactive
- An internal identification string
The cited reporting did not verify exposure of Social Security numbers, passwords, payment-card or bank-account information, health information, home addresses, email addresses, authentication tokens, source code or customer records. That is not the same as Dell confirming those categories were absent; it means they were not established by the available reports.

As of August 18, 2026, the sources reviewed for this report do not provide a later, independently verified Dell forensic conclusion about the September 2024 employee-data claims. That absence does not prove the allegations were false, nor does it establish that they remained unresolved indefinitely.
Is this connected to Dell’s May 2024 customer incident?
The September employee-data allegation appears separate from Dell’s May 2024 customer-data incident, although the cited sources do not establish the relationship between them.
In May 2024, Dell said information from a customer portal had been accessed. The affected data reportedly included names, physical addresses, hardware and order information, service tags, item descriptions, order dates and warranty information. Dell said that incident did not involve payment or financial information, email addresses, telephone numbers or highly sensitive customer information. Dell also said it took containment steps, notified law enforcement and engaged an outside forensics firm. Its customer notice and reporting from TechCrunch describe that event.

There is no cited evidence that the May incident and the September allegation shared the same system, attacker, intrusion or root cause. The May customer-record figure should not be added to the alleged employee-and-partner count.

Names and internal identifiers may appear less sensitive than passwords or financial data, but accurate workforce information can help attackers build convincing pretexts. Potential abuse scenarios include:
- Spear-phishing: messages tailored to a person’s name, status or role.
- Help-desk impersonation: attempts to persuade support staff to reset access or bypass controls.
- Business-email-compromise preparation: mapping employees, departments and partner relationships before requesting payments or sensitive files.
- Partner fraud: using a known Dell relationship to make unusual access or invoice requests appear legitimate.
- Credential and MFA theft: sending convincing password-reset prompts or asking for authentication codes.
These are potential consequences, not evidence that any of them occurred in this incident. Employment status can also become stale, and a genuine-looking sample would not by itself prove where the information came from.

What employees and contractors should do
- Treat unexpected Dell-related contact as suspicious. Be cautious with password-reset messages, urgent calls and requests involving payroll, access or device management.
- Never provide secrets to an unsolicited caller. Do not share passwords, multifactor-authentication codes, recovery codes or device-approval prompts.
- Verify requests independently. Use Dell’s internal directory or a known-good communication channel rather than replying to the message or using its phone number.
- Report suspected phishing. Use Dell’s established security or incident-reporting process.
- Review account activity. Check authentication logs and account notifications where available, and report unfamiliar sign-ins, resets or privilege changes.
- Change credentials when warranted. A password change is especially important if there is any indication that passwords or authentication data—not merely employee metadata—were exposed. Do not reuse corporate passwords on personal services.
Messages that correctly contain a person’s name, employment status, title or internal identifier should not be treated as proof that the sender is legitimate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What partners should do
- Confirm unusual requests with a known Dell contact using an independent channel.
- Review delegated access, third-party accounts and recent privilege changes.
- Check for unexpected users, API keys, forwarding rules or privileged access.
- Require multifactor authentication and apply least-privilege access.
- Alert your organization’s security team to suspicious Dell-themed outreach.
Do consumers need to freeze their credit?
Not automatically. A credit freeze is primarily intended to reduce the risk of new-credit fraud after exposure of identity information such as a Social Security number. The September reporting does not establish that Social Security numbers or financial data were exposed.

Consider a credit freeze if Dell or another authoritative source confirms exposure of government identifiers or financial identity information, or if you see signs of identity theft. U.S. readers can use the Federal Trade Commission’s official IdentityTheft.gov guidance rather than relying on commercial “dark-web scan” claims.

Paid identity monitoring may be useful in some confirmed identity-theft situations, but it does not prevent phishing. A password manager can help prevent password reuse, but it is a preventive measure—not proof that this incident exposed credentials.
What remains unknown
- Whether the alleged database was sourced from Dell.
- Whether the sample was authentic and representative of the full database.
- How many people were actually affected.
- Whether the count included partners, contractors or former employees.
- How the information was obtained—through unauthorized access, scraping, an old database, insider disclosure or fabrication.
- Whether passwords, authentication data or more sensitive personal information were involved.
- Whether the September allegation was connected to the May customer incident.
- Whether Dell later issued individual notifications, regulatory filings or a final public forensic conclusion.
Separately reported later Dell cybersecurity events should not be folded into this September 2024 allegation without a direct public connection.
