Amazon announced on June 3, 2022, that Dave Clark would resign after 23 years with the company. His last day was July 1, 2022. Clark was CEO of Amazon’s Worldwide Consumer division—not CEO of Amazon—and the company said he was leaving to pursue other opportunities. The announcement was sudden in public, but Clark said he had discussed transitioning out with his family and others close to him for some time.
What happened to Dave Clark at Amazon?
Amazon announced Clark’s resignation on June 3, 2022. The company’s SEC filing records his resignation as effective July 1, 2022. Amazon initially said he was leaving “to pursue other opportunities” and had not named a successor in that first announcement.
“Abrupt” describes how the news landed publicly: the announcement gave the organization only about a month before Clark’s departure. It does not establish that he was fired or forced out. Amazon’s announcement called it a resignation, and Clark said he had been discussing a transition for some time. Neither the company’s public explanation nor the filing says he was dismissed.
What did “CEO of Worldwide Consumer” mean?
Clark was one of Amazon’s most senior operating executives, responsible for a broad customer-facing business. Contemporary Associated Press coverage published by CBS News described the group as encompassing Amazon’s online and physical stores, third-party marketplace and Prime. He did not lead Amazon as a whole; Andy Jassy was the company’s CEO.

Clark took the consumer role in January 2021, succeeding Jeff Wilke, who had announced plans to retire. Before that, Clark led Worldwide Operations, with responsibilities spanning fulfillment, delivery and other parts of Amazon’s logistics network. Amazon’s leadership announcement about Wilke’s retirement also described Clark’s work in areas including robotics and Prime Air.
Clark’s 23-year Amazon career
Clark joined Amazon in May 1999 through its Operations Pathways Program after completing his MBA. He began as an operations manager in Kentucky, later became a general manager in the Northeast and rose to lead Worldwide Operations before taking charge of Worldwide Consumer in 2021. Amazon credited him with helping develop fulfillment centers, transportation and delivery capabilities, as well as leadership talent across the organization. That background matters to the next chapter: Clark’s work was closely connected to the physical systems that move products from suppliers through warehouses and delivery networks to customers. It made a move into logistics technology a natural fit, though it does not by itself explain the timing of his resignation.

Amazon did not give a detailed personal or business reason. Its public explanation was that Clark wanted to pursue other opportunities. Clark said he had discussed transitioning out with his family and others close to him for some time and believed the timing was right. Jassy, meanwhile, said the consumer organization still had significant work ahead.

The departure came against a difficult operating backdrop. Amazon’s announcement acknowledged challenging and unpredictable years for the consumer business. Clark referred to pandemic-era customer-experience challenges and a multi-year plan to address inflationary pressures in 2022. These comments establish that the business was managing substantial operational and cost demands; they do not establish those pressures as the cause of Clark’s resignation.
Contemporary reporting also discussed warehouse expansion, staffing and costs, as well as labor issues including a unionization victory at an Amazon warehouse. GeekWire’s coverage placed the announcement amid those pressures. They are relevant context, but the public record cited here does not show that any one of them prompted Clark to leave. It would overstate the evidence to describe his departure as a firing over operational problems or labor relations.

Who replaced Dave Clark?
On June 21, 2022, Amazon named Doug Herrington CEO of the newly named Worldwide Amazon Stores organization. The change was more than a one-for-one title swap: Amazon renamed the former Worldwide Consumer group and placed its unified Operations organization under John Felton, who reported to Herrington. Herrington had previously led Amazon’s North American Consumer business and worked on businesses including Consumables and AmazonFresh. Amazon’s succession announcement set out the revised structure; the company’s executive profile says Herrington has served in the role since July 2022.
What did Clark do after Amazon?
Five days after Amazon announced his departure, logistics technology company Flexport announced that Clark would become its CEO on September 1, 2022. He initially served as co-CEO with founder Ryan Petersen; Petersen’s planned transition to executive chairman was part of the announced arrangement. Flexport’s announcement described Clark’s appointment and his experience building logistics operations.

The move linked Clark’s Amazon experience in fulfillment and transportation with a company focused on global logistics. The available announcements establish his appointment and the planned leadership arrangement; they are not a basis for claims about his later career status.
