Databricks’ reported $10 billion financing was a December 2024 story, not a pending 2026 fundraise. GeekWire reported the round at a $62 billion valuation, with proceeds intended to accelerate artificial-intelligence work and compete for scarce technical talent. Since then, the company’s Puget Sound presence has expanded substantially, with the largest reported commitments now in downtown Bellevue rather than Seattle proper.
The available evidence supports a major Seattle–Bellevue engineering and AI base—not a headquarters relocation from San Francisco and not proof that every dollar of the financing was invested locally.
What happened with the $10 billion financing?
On December 18, 2024, GeekWire reported that Databricks was set to raise $10 billion at a $62 billion valuation. The stated strategic rationale was to accelerate its AI push and compete for researchers, engineers and other high-demand employees.
That wording needs updating. A Form D record associated with Databricks shows a $10 billion exempt offering, with $8.589 billion sold and $1.411 billion remaining in the filing’s reported figures (NASAA Form D data). A Form D is a regulatory notice, not an audited financing announcement. It does not by itself establish whether the transaction was one conventional venture round, a mix of primary and secondary sales, or exactly how proceeds were allocated.
#1 Best Overall
Accordingly, the defensible description is that Databricks was reported to be raising a $10 billion round, while regulatory offering data later recorded billions sold. The reported $62 billion valuation is a transaction-related private-company valuation, not a continuously quoted public-market capitalization.
How the Seattle-area operation grew
| Date | What was reported | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| 2021 | 52 regional employees, according to GeekWire’s later comparison | Baseline for the local expansion |
| December 2024 | Nearly 400 employees across a Seattle research-and-development facility and a Bellevue location; more than two dozen engineering openings appeared in a job-board snapshot | A rapidly growing regional talent operation, but not a current headcount |
| Third quarter 2025 | Newmark recorded a 37,497-square-foot Bellevue expansion and said Databricks’ Puget Sound offices exceeded 150,000 square feet | A significant Eastside real-estate commitment |
| December 2025 | Databricks’ ISO/IEC 27018 attestation listed a satellite office at 500 108th Ave. NE, Suite 1820, Bellevue | Documented Bellevue operating presence |
| June 2026 | Local reporting said Databricks signed 160,000 square feet at Four106, 380 106th Ave. NE, taking its reported Puget Sound footprint above 270,000 square feet | The largest reported Washington commitment to date |
The 2024 employee and job figures are historical snapshots. They should not be presented as Databricks’ 2026 staffing level. Likewise, leased space is a proxy for growth plans, not a direct count of occupied desks or employees.

Is this a Seattle expansion or a Bellevue expansion?
Both cities are part of the regional story, but the later and larger commitments are in Bellevue. The 2024 report described a Seattle R&D facility and a Bellevue office. Newmark’s 2025 report documented additional Bellevue space, and June 2026 coverage from Bellevue Beacon/Puget Sound Business Journal described the 160,000-square-foot Four106 lease.

That reporting put the broader Puget Sound footprint above 270,000 square feet, but Databricks has not publicly confirmed in the cited material the move-in date, occupancy schedule or whether the new lease replaces overlapping space. The evidence supports expansion, not a move of the company’s headquarters. Microsoft’s July 2026 announcement still described Databricks as headquartered in San Francisco and operating more than 30 offices worldwide.

Why Bellevue attracts AI and data companies
Access to specialized talent
The Seattle region supplies engineers with experience in cloud infrastructure, security, distributed systems, enterprise software and machine learning. Microsoft and Amazon add large nearby talent pools, while existing Databricks employees can support continued hiring.
Microsoft and Azure proximity
On July 23, 2026, Microsoft and Databricks announced an expanded strategic partnership extending through the 2030s. Microsoft said Databricks would deepen its use of Azure Databricks and broaden integration across Microsoft’s enterprise ecosystem (Microsoft announcement). That relationship gives a Puget Sound location strategic relevance beyond simple labor costs.
Rank #4
Office supply and Eastside geography
Bellevue offers newer high-rise inventory, access to Eastside residents and regional transit connections. Large blocks of Class A space can be easier to assemble there than in a tighter, older downtown Seattle market.

Bellevue Beacon reported Seattle business-and-occupation tax rates of 0.342% to 0.658%, compared with Bellevue’s reported 0.1596% rate, and estimated Seattle’s 2026 JumpStart payroll-tax burden at roughly $1,450 to $9,390 per job depending on circumstances (Bellevue Beacon analysis). These figures should be checked against current municipal schedules, and there is no cited Databricks statement saying taxes determined the Four106 decision. Talent, transit, available space and employee location may be equally important.

What the financing could support
- AI-product research and engineering
- Recruiting and retaining senior technical staff
- Security, compliance and governance capabilities
- Cloud infrastructure and computing capacity
- Enterprise sales, implementation and customer support
- Potential acquisitions or employee-liquidity transactions, if included in the deal structure
The 2024 report linked the financing specifically to AI acceleration and talent competition, but it did not identify a Seattle-specific budget. Connecting the funding to the regional office growth is a reasonable inference from the timing and scale, not a disclosed allocation.
What this means for Bellevue’s technology market
Databricks is part of a broader movement of Bay Area technology companies toward Bellevue. A large lease can help fill new towers and support demand for nearby housing, services and recruiting, while also intensifying competition for AI, data and security professionals.
The development should not be reduced to “Seattle is losing and Bellevue is winning.” Databricks’ regional footprint spans both sides of Lake Washington, and its choice of Bellevue appears to reflect a combination of workforce access, real-estate availability, Microsoft and Amazon proximity, transit and tax differences. Office commitments also may represent future growth or consolidation rather than immediate hiring.
What remains unverified
- Databricks’ current Seattle and Bellevue employee count as of August 2026
- The complete investor list and primary-versus-secondary structure of the $10 billion offering
- The exact Four106 occupancy and move-in schedule
- Whether all 160,000 square feet is incremental space or partly replaces existing leases
- A company statement explaining why Bellevue was selected over Seattle
- A Seattle-specific hiring target funded by the financing
These gaps matter because private-company financing records and commercial leases reveal commitments, not the full operating plan.
Bottom line
Databricks’ 2024 $10 billion financing report marked an AI hiring push; the subsequent record is a much larger Puget Sound presence, increasingly concentrated in Bellevue. Reported leases point to more than 270,000 square feet regionally by June 2026, but they do not establish an equivalent headcount or a headquarters move. The clearest conclusion is that Databricks is treating the Seattle–Bellevue corridor as a major engineering, security and enterprise-AI base while remaining headquartered in San Francisco.
