Dane Stuckey joined OpenAI in October 2024 after more than a decade at Palantir Technologies, where he served as chief information security officer. Contemporary reports described him as OpenAI’s CISO or co-CISO, working alongside Matt Knight rather than replacing him outright.

The appointment matters because OpenAI’s security responsibilities extend across user data, enterprise systems, model infrastructure, privacy, compliance, and emerging AI-specific threats. Later OpenAI and partner publications continued to identify Stuckey as the company’s CISO.

What happened

Stuckey announced his move to OpenAI on October 15, 2024. Coverage published on October 15 and 16 described him as OpenAI’s newest CISO or as a co-CISO. TechCrunch reported that he would work with Matt Knight, who was already leading security at OpenAI. Bloomberg Law described the arrangement as shared CISO leadership.

That distinction is important. The public record does not support saying that Stuckey immediately became OpenAI’s sole security chief, that Knight left the role, or that Stuckey replaced him.

Who is Dane Stuckey?

Stuckey joined Palantir in 2014 on its information-security team, working in detection engineering and incident response, according to TechCrunch. He later became Palantir’s CISO. SecurityWeek reported that he held senior security roles at Palantir for more than ten years, including more than six years as CISO.

That background is relevant to OpenAI because both companies operate systems that handle sensitive information for enterprise, government, research, and developer users. Palantir’s government and defense relationships provide context, but the available reporting does not establish that Stuckey held a particular government clearance or was hired specifically to support Pentagon work.

What Stuckey said about the move

In announcing his appointment, Stuckey emphasized that security, compliance, and trust were central to OpenAI’s mission. He also highlighted protecting users, supporting democratic institutions, and helping develop safe artificial general intelligence.

Those statements describe the priorities he associated with the job; they do not prove that OpenAI had already resolved its security or privacy challenges.

Why the appointment mattered

OpenAI was expanding rapidly in late 2024, with growing consumer and enterprise use and increasing interest from government and national-security organizations. That expansion increased the importance of protecting:

  • user conversations and personal information;
  • model weights, research systems, and training infrastructure;
  • developer platforms, APIs, and enterprise environments;
  • internal systems and third-party integrations;
  • compliance controls and customer assurance processes.

An AI company also faces risks that are not limited to conventional corporate security. These include model and infrastructure theft, prompt injection, data exfiltration through AI agents, misuse of AI for cyberattacks, and attacks against increasingly automated systems.

It is reasonable to view the hire as a sign that OpenAI needed more mature, senior security leadership as it scaled. That is contextual analysis, not a formally stated explanation from OpenAI for the appointment. SecurityWeek also reported the hire alongside broader security and governance developments, including OpenAI’s safety-and-security committee and the appointment of former NSA Director Paul Nakasone to the company’s board.

What the CISO role does—and does not—establish

Stuckey’s title establishes responsibility for a senior security function, but it does not show that he personally controlled every security-related activity at OpenAI. Cybersecurity, information security, privacy, product security, model safety, preparedness, and national-security policy can involve different teams and executives.

Public evidence suggests that Stuckey’s work has touched several of these areas. In an OpenAI post about the New York Times litigation, he was identified as Chief Information Security Officer and wrote about user privacy and access to data. Later public statements connected him with enterprise security, cyber defense, resilience, controls, and compliance.

Evidence that he remained involved at OpenAI

The appointment was not merely a short-lived 2024 announcement. Later first-party and partner material continued to identify Stuckey as OpenAI’s CISO:

Together, these references support the conclusion that Stuckey remained publicly involved in OpenAI’s security work. They do not reveal his exact reporting line, team size, internal authority, or whether the co-CISO structure later changed.

What remains unknown

OpenAI has not publicly established, in the cited material, the precise division of responsibilities between Stuckey and Knight. The available sources also do not provide a complete list of Stuckey’s duties, measurable security outcomes, compensation, team size, or evidence that he oversees OpenAI’s separate model-safety and preparedness functions.

For enterprise customers and risk professionals, the practical takeaway is therefore limited but meaningful: OpenAI has continued to present Stuckey as a senior security executive while building security, privacy, compliance, and cyber-defense partnerships. That signals institutional priority, not proof that all associated risks have been eliminated.

Bottom line

Dane Stuckey joined OpenAI in October 2024 as a senior security executive after a long tenure at Palantir. The best-supported description is that he initially shared or overlapped CISO responsibilities with Matt Knight. Later OpenAI, IBM, and CrowdStrike materials continued to identify him as OpenAI’s CISO, confirming an ongoing public role without establishing every detail of the company’s internal security structure.
