Apple has reportedly discussed a possible bid for Perplexity, but there is no verified public offer or announced acquisition. Bloomberg reported in June 2025 that Apple executives held early internal discussions about the idea and that they might not lead to an offer. Perplexity later said it had no knowledge of current or future M&A discussions involving the company. The strategic case is credible: Perplexity could give Apple a faster route into AI-powered search. But buying it would be an expensive, complex shortcut—not a guaranteed fix for Siri or Apple’s broader AI gap.
What is actually known about an Apple-Perplexity deal?
The evidence supports reported internal Apple discussions, not a formal transaction. Bloomberg reported on June 20, 2025, that executives including M&A chief Adrian Perica, services chief Eddy Cue and senior AI decision-makers had discussed potentially bidding for Perplexity. Bloomberg described the conversations as early-stage and said they might never result in an offer. That report is not confirmation that Apple made a bid.
Perplexity subsequently told Reuters it had “no knowledge” of current or future M&A discussions involving the company, while Apple did not publicly confirm negotiations. That response does not rule out internal deliberations at Apple; it does underscore that a rumor about a possible bid is not the same as a negotiation or an agreed deal. Reuters-sourced coverage carried the response.
The distinction matters: internal strategy discussion, contact with a target, a formal offer, due diligence, a signed agreement, regulatory review and a completed acquisition are separate stages. The reporting supports only the first. Apple’s newsroom archive contains no public Perplexity acquisition announcement in the material reviewed through July 2026. That establishes no announced deal in the reviewed public record, not whether any private conversations continue.

Apple’s leadership has also changed since the original report. Apple announced in April 2026 that Tim Cook would become executive chairman and John Ternus CEO. Cook’s earlier comments that Apple was “very open to M&A that accelerates our roadmap” show a general openness to acquisitions, not a confirmation that Perplexity is a target or that the new leadership has adopted such a plan. Apple’s company-news page documents the transition.
Why Perplexity could appeal to Apple
Perplexity’s central product is an AI-powered search and answer service. It retrieves information from the web and presents synthesized responses with sources. That is a more specific fit for Apple than the claim that buying it would instantly deliver a complete AI platform: Apple could be interested in search technology, a product already used by consumers, specialist engineers, or some combination of them.
- Safari: Apple could develop a more conversational search experience, with answers and cited sources alongside or instead of a conventional list of links. It could also gain more control over how users search from its browser.
- Siri: Web retrieval and answer synthesis could help Siri respond to questions that need current information. Perplexity’s search experience and engineering team might also give Apple a head start on building that capability.
- Apple Intelligence: A search service could provide an external knowledge layer for requests that exceed what an on-device model knows, potentially complementing Apple’s own models and systems.
- Distribution and product feedback: An existing consumer product can show how people use AI search in practice. Buying it might give Apple a running service and experienced team rather than requiring it to build every layer from scratch.
The appeal may be speed as much as technology. Bloomberg’s report described Apple’s discussions as connected to its interest in AI talent and capabilities. A purchase, if completed and integrated well, could accelerate a product roadmap. But acquisition does not automatically transfer a team’s speed, preserve its product quality or make its systems ready for Apple’s scale and privacy requirements.

It could strengthen one important part of Siri: finding relevant, up-to-date information and turning it into a readable answer. That is not the same as making Siri a dependable assistant across Apple devices.

A capable assistant also needs to understand intent, securely use personal context, take actions across apps, manage permissions, recover when an action fails and respond quickly across languages and regions. It must work with on-device processing and Apple’s private-cloud architecture where appropriate. Search retrieval can help answer “What happened today?”; it does not by itself solve “Reschedule my meeting, message everyone affected and tell me if there is a conflict.”
Apple would still have to integrate Perplexity’s technology with its operating systems, identity and privacy protections, models, app-action framework and devices. It would also have to decide when Siri should use Apple’s own systems, Perplexity, another provider or a conventional search engine. The result could be a better search tool without being a dramatically better all-purpose Siri.
Apple’s Google relationship is both an opportunity and a constraint
An Apple-owned AI search service could give Apple greater control over Safari’s search experience and a stronger alternative in negotiations with Google. That matters because the default-search relationship is strategically valuable but exposed to regulatory pressure. Coverage has described Apple’s interest in AI search for Safari against a backdrop of U.S. scrutiny of Google’s search arrangements. The reported acquisition idea has been discussed in that context.

However, Google’s payments to Apple are also a major part of the economic backdrop. An Apple search product would have to attract users and develop a sustainable business model before it could replace the value of that arrangement. Search advertising, paid AI features and commerce referrals are possible revenue routes, but each brings its own costs, policy questions and competition. Replacing Google is therefore not an uncomplicated financial win; it could mean giving up dependable revenue in exchange for a costly effort to build a rival.

Why buying may be harder than partnering
A full acquisition would give Apple more control over Perplexity’s product, technology and roadmap. It would also require Apple to assume the company’s obligations and integration challenges. There are less sweeping options: a search partnership, a licensing deal, a minority investment, or a broader multi-provider architecture for Siri and Safari. Apple could also continue developing its own systems and buy smaller specialist teams without taking over an entire company.
| Option | Potential advantage | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Acquire Perplexity | More direct control of the product, team and technology | High cost, integration burden, regulatory attention and retention risk |
| Partner or license | Faster access with less capital and more flexibility | Apple would not fully control the service, roadmap or provider relationships |
| Minority investment | A stake in the company without a full takeover | Less influence and no assurance of exclusivity or long-term access |
| Build internally | Closer fit with Apple’s systems, privacy design and product priorities | Could take longer and still require outside models or services |
Apple has already shown that it can combine its own technology with external AI services rather than owning every model or product it uses. A partnership could let it test AI search in Safari or Siri while preserving the option to use multiple providers. The cost is dependence: Apple would not control the partner’s priorities, infrastructure, policies or agreements with competitors.
The price could be unusually large for Apple
Reports in 2025 placed Perplexity’s private valuation at roughly $14 billion to $18 billion, with later reporting suggesting that valuations could rise further. These are reported figures from different moments and financing contexts, not a single definitive current price or an announced purchase valuation. A buyer’s actual cost could also include a premium, employee retention packages and continuing infrastructure investment.
For scale, Apple’s largest widely reported acquisition remains Beats, purchased for about $3 billion in 2014. A Perplexity transaction at or above the cited private-market range would be a major departure from Apple’s acquisition history. That comparison illustrates the size of the potential bet; it does not mean Apple could not afford it or that the deal would be worthwhile.

The purchase price would be only part of the bill. AI search requires significant computing, product development and ongoing work to retrieve and rank information responsibly. Perplexity’s reported three-year, $750 million Microsoft Azure commitment, covered by Bloomberg in January 2026, illustrates the scale of cloud infrastructure commitments that can accompany this kind of service. That reported arrangement is not an Apple transaction, but it is relevant to the economics of operating the product Apple might buy.

Accuracy, sources and copyright
AI search can produce incorrect or outdated answers, misrepresent sources or synthesize material in ways that frustrate publishers and rights holders. A cited response is not necessarily an accurate one. Apple would inherit reputational and legal exposure as well as the technology, and would need to examine the service’s content practices, licensing arrangements and treatment of publisher material. Those are due-diligence issues, not proof that an acquisition would be unlawful.
Privacy and data handling
Apple would need to reconcile the handling of search histories and other user data with its privacy commitments. Key questions include how queries are stored, whether data is used for model training, how third-party content is processed and whether the experience can fit Apple’s on-device and private-cloud approach. An acquisition would not make those questions disappear; it would make Apple responsible for answering them.
Regulatory scrutiny
Regulators could examine whether ownership of a prominent mobile ecosystem, browser and assistant gives Apple an unfair way to favor its own search product or limit rival AI services. The transaction could also draw attention to competition in search and mobile distribution, data use and consumer choice. That makes regulatory review a material risk, especially in the United States and European Union, but it does not establish that regulators would block a deal.

Existing contracts and partner relationships
Perplexity has reportedly pursued relationships with device makers and cloud providers. Bloomberg reported a substantial Microsoft cloud commitment in 2026; earlier coverage also discussed device-maker relationships. Apple would need to review contract terms, investor rights, licenses and any exclusivity provisions before it could know what control an acquisition would actually confer. A takeover could also make Perplexity less appealing to users or partners who value it as an independent, cross-platform service.
Talent and integration
A startup team may not want to work inside a large company with more layers of review, tighter secrecy and different release priorities. Apple can offer resources and distribution, but it cannot assume that every key employee will stay or that startup product habits will survive integration. If the people and pace that made Perplexity useful leave, the value of acquiring it could fall sharply.
What Apple can do without buying Perplexity
Apple has several ways to improve its AI position without acquiring this company: build more capabilities internally, invest in private-cloud infrastructure, use outside models or services through partnerships, integrate AI search into Safari under a commercial agreement, or acquire smaller teams with specific expertise. Each path carries trade-offs, but Perplexity is not Apple’s only route to better search or a more capable Siri.

What to watch next
The meaningful signs of a transaction would be stronger than another headline about strategic interest: public confirmation from either company, a documented offer or agreement, regulatory filings, or an announcement describing a completed deal. Until then, a product integration or commercial partnership would also be possible evidence of Apple pursuing AI search without buying Perplexity. The existing reporting does not establish which, if any, of those routes Apple will take.
