Concha is a Western Australian-founded dating app built around one unusual rule: make voice contact before relying on text. Users could browse profiles, match, call or exchange voice messages, then continue texting or arrange a date. Its current status is less clear: Concha’s official website says the product is “Coming Soon” and still in active development, while Google Play continues to show an Android listing last updated on August 29, 2024.
What Concha was designed to do
Concha’s central proposition was “Talk before text.” The company describes the flow as “Swipe, Match, Talk,” using an in-app voice call that does not require users to disclose a personal phone number. Voice dating did not mean dating exclusively by audio; it changed which interaction came first.
The founders positioned voice as a way to hear tone and conversational style earlier, reduce the projection that can build during long text exchanges and create a more direct social interaction. Those were design aims, not independently demonstrated results. There is no published evidence here that Concha reduced ghosting or improved relationship outcomes.

PerthNow’s June 19, 2021 launch report described a stricter sequence in which users sent a recorded voice note and completed a call before text functionality was enabled. Concha’s current product description uses broader language covering calls, voice messages and talking before texting, so the mandatory sequence should be treated as a launch-era description rather than a confirmed current rule.

Why it was called Perth-conceived
PerthNow identified Concha’s founders as Western Australian entrepreneurs Sam Smith, Ronnie Giandzi and Zak Anak. The Google Play listing gives the developer address as Bentley, Western Australia. That supports describing Concha as Perth-conceived or Western Australian-founded, but does not establish that every part of its corporate operation was exclusively based in Perth.
The reported origin story is that Smith and Anak were making random calls because Smith wanted a real conversation rather than impersonal digital contact. They reached Giandzi, spoke for about 20 minutes and saw the potential for an app centred on immediate conversation. This is founder history reported by PerthNow, not an independently documented corporate timeline.
Concha says its name refers to the conch shell, which it presents as a symbol of talking and listening across cultures and centuries.

Concha used a freemium model. Free users received limited likes, compliments, voice messages and calls, while Concha Club subscriptions and individual purchases provided more access. Public company pages do not agree on the free allowances:

The difference may reflect a change between versions, a platform or regional variation, or inconsistent copy. It should not be treated as one universally current quota.

Privacy and safety considerations
An in-app call can reduce the need to reveal a phone number, but it is not a guarantee that a conversation is safe, private or free from recording. Ordinary online-dating risks still apply.

- A caller may harass, record or redistribute voice content.
- Scammers may push for money or a rapid move off-platform.
- Profile details can expose identity or approximate location.
Google Play says the app may share device or other IDs with third parties and collect location and personal information. It also reports encryption in transit and an option to request data deletion: Google Play’s Concha listing.
Apple’s developer-supplied disclosure for the US listing identifies possible collection or linkage involving coarse location, name, email address, phone number, photos or videos, audio, customer-support information and usage data used for tracking or analytics. Apple says those disclosures were supplied by the developer and were not verified by Apple: Apple’s Concha listing.
Concha’s terms require users to be at least 18: Concha’s terms and conditions. That conflicts with store labels showing 16+ on Apple and Mature 17+ on Google Play. Follow the contractual 18+ requirement rather than inferring eligibility from a store rating.

Is Concha still available in 2026?
The evidence is mixed rather than conclusive:
- Concha’s official website says “Coming Soon” and that the product is still in active development.
- Google Play continues to show an Android listing, 10K+ cumulative downloads and an August 29, 2024 update.
- The US Apple listing is available in the evidence, but an Australian App Store link returned 404 during verification.
- The support page still offers an app-issues contact while repeating the active-development language.
“10K+ downloads” is a store threshold, not a count of active users, local members, matches or successful relationships. The public evidence therefore supports calling Concha a genuine product with live company and store pages, but not a clearly operational, broadly available dating service with an established 2026 community.
Who might prefer Concha?
- People who dislike prolonged text exchanges.
- Users who want to assess conversational chemistry earlier.
- Those who prefer hearing a voice to judging a short bio alone.
- People who want more friction than rapid swipe-and-message dating.
Who might find it a poor fit?
- People who prefer text before speaking to a stranger.
- Users who communicate better in writing or feel uncomfortable with voice interaction.
- Anyone needing proof of a large local user base before joining.
- Readers seeking currently verified pricing or a mature, documented safety ecosystem.
- Anyone under 18 under Concha’s terms.
A first call should remain limited and on-platform. Do not share financial information, passwords, precise location or other sensitive details simply because the app provides an in-app calling feature.
Bottom line
Concha was a distinctive Perth-founded experiment in putting voice before text in online dating. Its founders were Sam Smith, Ronnie Giandzi and Zak Anak, and its product combined swiping and matching with calls, voice messages and paid extras. But the official “Coming Soon” message, conflicting quotas, dated pricing and uncertain regional listings mean Concha should not be presented as a clearly active or established dating platform in August 2026.
