The claim was accurate, but it is historical—not a current 2026 Apple deal. On or around April 29, 2023, mainland-Chinese retailers reportedly listed the 256GB iPhone 14 Pro Max for RMB 7,999, compared with Apple China’s original RMB 9,899 price for that storage tier. That was a RMB 1,900 reduction, or roughly $280–$290 at contemporary exchange rates.
The promotion came from third-party retail channels rather than an across-the-board price cut on Apple’s own website or in Apple-owned stores. As of August 2026, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is a discontinued former flagship, so the old price should not be treated as a live bargain.
What was the actual discount?
The reported promotion applied to a specific product and market:

The underlying report was published on April 29, 2023. Converting RMB 1,900 at roughly 6.7–6.8 yuan per U.S. dollar produces approximately $280–$290. The yuan figures are the more precise way to describe the promotion; the dollar amount is only a rounded conversion that varies with exchange rates.

It was not an Apple Store price cut
The distinction between Apple’s official price and a retailer promotion matters. Reports indicated that the RMB 7,999 price was available through third-party Chinese retail channels, including major electronics platforms and authorized sellers. Apple’s listed prices generally remained unchanged during the promotion period.
Reuters reported earlier in 2023 that retailers such as JD.com and Suning were discounting some high-end iPhone 14 models by as much as 10%. A South China Morning Post report likewise described retailer promotions while noting that Apple’s own prices were initially retained.

Therefore, “Apple cut the iPhone 14 Pro Max price” is misleading. The more accurate description is that Chinese retailers discounted selected inventory below Apple China’s official reference price.

Why were Chinese retailers discounting iPhones?
The promotions came amid weaker smartphone demand in China and intense competition from domestic Android manufacturers. Contemporary reporting said Chinese smartphone sales in 2022 fell to their lowest level in roughly a decade, while Apple’s China sales also weakened during the relevant period.

Retailers had several reasons to reduce prices:
- Stimulate demand for expensive phones in a softer market.
- Compete with domestic premium smartphone brands.
- Move inventory through large online retail platforms.
- Use channel promotions that did not require Apple to change its official price list.
These market conditions describe 2022 and early 2023. They should not be presented as current 2026 sales data.
Why the storage tier changes the math
Apple’s original mainland-China launch announcement listed the iPhone 14 Pro Max from RMB 8,999 for the 128GB entry configuration. The RMB 9,899 reference price, however, applied to the 256GB model—the same configuration reportedly offered for RMB 7,999.

Comparing RMB 7,999 with the 128GB launch price would understate the original price difference and produce an apples-to-oranges comparison. The reported saving was not $280 off every iPhone 14 Pro Max; it was approximately $280 off the 256GB version against its relevant official reference price.

Was RMB 7,999 available everywhere?
No. RMB 7,999 should be treated as a reported promotional listing, not a guaranteed nationwide price. Actual availability could vary by:

Earlier discount campaigns reportedly saw some large-capacity models sell out quickly. A marketplace price also does not automatically mean that every seller on the platform was authorized or that every buyer qualified for the same offer.

It means the headline should be written in the past tense. Apple removed the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max from its primary lineup after introducing the iPhone 15 Pro series in September 2023. Apple’s current China iPhone buying page and online store focus on newer models.
A phone advertised in 2026 as an “iPhone 14 Pro Max deal” may be remaining inventory, a used or refurbished device, or gray-market stock. The 2023 RMB 7,999 promotion does not establish its current market value.

Checklist for buyers considering one now
- Verify the condition. Confirm whether the phone is sealed, previously activated, refurbished, or used. Check battery health on used devices.
- Check the exact model number. Regional hardware can differ in cellular-band support and SIM configuration.
- Confirm authenticity and activation status. Check the serial number and make sure Activation Lock is disabled before completing a purchase.
- Review warranty terms. Keep the original invoice and purchase documentation. Apple’s mainland-China warranty terms state that product warranty coverage is generally one year from the invoice date, subject to applicable law and exclusions.
- Check the seller and return policy. Prefer Apple, an Apple-authorized retailer, or a major seller with clearly stated returns. Apple provides an authorized retailer and service locator.
- Calculate the landed cost. For an overseas purchase, include shipping, import duties, sales tax, payment fees, return costs, and possible warranty-service expenses.
- Compare newer alternatives. A lower sticker price may be offset by an older battery, a shorter remaining support horizon, or the limited availability of genuine new units.
Common mistakes in interpreting the headline
- Calling a retailer coupon an Apple Store discount.
- Comparing the 256GB promotional price with the 128GB launch price.
- Using the April 2023 promotion as evidence of an August 2026 price.
- Assuming every color, capacity, or Chinese retailer offered the same price.
- Using a current exchange rate while describing the historical dollar conversion as if it were the original quoted price.
- Ignoring regional SIM, warranty, authenticity, and service issues when importing a China-market phone.
