Chatr did temporarily replace unlimited outgoing SMS with a 2,000-message monthly allowance in May 2025. MobileSyrup reported that additional outgoing texts cost $0.70 each, while incoming messages remained unlimited. However, Chatr’s public plan page now advertises unlimited Canada-, U.S.- and international texting, so the 2025 restriction should not be treated as a description of every current plan.
What Chatr changed in May 2025
On May 14, 2025, MobileSyrup reported that Rogers-owned Chatr had quietly removed unlimited outgoing texting from new activations and plan changes. Under the reported policy, customers received 2,000 outgoing SMS messages per billing period. Each additional outgoing message reportedly cost $0.70.
The report did not establish that every existing Chatr customer was automatically moved to the new terms. The change was described as applying to new activations and customers changing plans.

Who could actually exceed 2,000 messages?
A customer sending a few dozen conventional texts per day would generally be unlikely to reach 2,000 in a month. The cap mattered more to high-volume users, including:
- People sending automated business, appointment, delivery or community notifications.
- Customers in large group-text conversations.
- Households using one number or account for frequent messaging.
- People who regularly communicate internationally through traditional SMS.
- Users with limited access to mobile data or Wi-Fi.
Message counts can also rise quickly when someone sends many short individual messages instead of fewer longer ones. The practical risk was not just the allowance; it was the unusually high per-message charge after the allowance.
SMS is not the same as every kind of “text”
The reported restriction concerned outgoing carrier SMS. It did not automatically apply to every messaging service on a phone.

- iMessage: Messages sent through Apple’s data service generally use mobile data or Wi-Fi rather than SMS.
- RCS: Depending on the device, settings and connection, RCS can use mobile data or Wi-Fi.
- WhatsApp, Signal and Messenger: These services use data, not traditional carrier SMS.
Be careful with fallback behaviour. An iMessage or RCS conversation can revert to SMS if the recipient does not support the service, data messaging is disabled or connectivity is unavailable. Check the message colour or status and your phone’s settings before assuming a conversation is outside your SMS allowance.
Data-based apps can reduce SMS use, particularly for international conversations, but they are not a complete replacement. Verification codes, bank alerts, business notifications and messages to people without the same app may still require SMS.
Why the policy drew attention
Unlimited texting had become a common feature of Canadian budget wireless plans, although the exact international coverage varied. Removing it made Chatr’s offer less generous and created the possibility of unexpected charges for customers who did not understand the new terms.

The policy was controversial because $0.70 per additional message could become expensive quickly. That is different from proving that a customer was charged without legally required notice: the available reporting establishes the plan change, but does not establish whether Chatr breached Canadian consumer-protection or contract rules.
At the time, MobileSyrup compared Chatr with competitors including Fido, Freedom Mobile and Public Mobile, which were reported to offer various forms of unlimited domestic or international texting. Those comparisons describe the May 2025 market and should not be treated as current prices or plan terms.
What Chatr offers now
As of the August 18, 2026 snapshot, Chatr’s official plans page advertised unlimited Canada-, U.S.- and international texting on its listed plans. The page showed monthly options priced at $19, $21, $25, $30 and $35, with different data allowances and, on some offers, autopay bonuses.

The current page also promotes prepaid service, no credit checks, no commitment and nationwide calling on the Rogers network. Prices and bonus data are presented for new activations and may depend on successful autopay enrollment.
Chatr’s current public listings indicate that the 2,000-text restriction is no longer reflected in its standard advertised lineup. They do not establish the exact date of any reversal, whether every legacy plan changed, or whether the old $0.70 rate remains in any account-specific terms.

Check your account before changing plans
Existing customers should verify their own terms rather than assume the public plan page applies to them. Before switching, confirm:

- Whether the plan is legacy, grandfathered or promotional.
- The outgoing SMS allowance and any pay-per-use rate.
- Whether texting to the U.S. and other international destinations is included.
- How group texts, picture messages, premium SMS and annual plans are treated.
- Whether changing plans removes benefits that cannot be restored.
Chatr’s support page includes a “Plan changes & features” category. Chatr’s terms of service also say that removed plans may no longer be available at their former price. That makes checking the account before migrating especially important.
Should you stay with Chatr?
Staying may make sense if your account shows unlimited texting, you rarely send high volumes of SMS, and you value prepaid service, no credit check, no contract or Rogers-network coverage.
Consider another plan or carrier if your account still has a low outgoing-text limit, international SMS is essential, you cannot depend on data-based messaging, or a surprise per-message bill would be difficult to absorb. Compare the full package—coverage, data, calling, international texting and price—not texting alone. Potential alternatives include Public Mobile, Freedom Mobile and Fido, but verify their current offers directly at Public Mobile, Freedom Mobile and Fido.
