ChatGPT is losing share on several important measures, while Google Gemini is growing—but the available evidence does not show that Gemini has overtaken ChatGPT overall. The answer depends on what “market share” counts: website visits, app and web audiences, referrals, or company-reported active users. For consumers weighing a paid AI plan, the shift matters less as a horse race than as a choice between ecosystems: ChatGPT’s tools and workflows versus Gemini’s integration with Google services and bundled storage.
What the latest numbers actually show
There is no single audited market-share figure for AI assistants. The strongest indicators point in the same broad direction—ChatGPT remains a leader, but competitors are taking a larger portion of measured activity—while producing very different percentages because they count different things.

The headline is therefore directionally accurate if “losing market share” means losing a portion of measured activity to a faster-growing field. It does not establish that ChatGPT has fewer users in absolute terms, that every lost ChatGPT user moved to Gemini, or that Gemini is now the largest assistant. Similarweb still places ChatGPT first in its web-and-app comparison, and Sensor Tower describes it as retaining category leadership.

Think of the figures as answers to different questions, not competing attempts to report one universal number:

- Website visits count visits to domains. They can miss people using a mobile app or Gemini features inside Search, Android, Gmail, or Docs.
- Audience estimates try to count distinct people across platforms. Their methods and coverage differ from a website-only measure.
- Referrals count traffic an assistant sends to outside websites. An assistant can be widely used for answers that do not generate a click, so referral share is not usage share.
- Downloads show new installations, not whether people keep using an app.
- Monthly and weekly active users use different time windows and may cover different product surfaces. Google’s 950 million Gemini app MAUs and OpenAI’s 900 million ChatGPT WAUs cannot be ranked directly.
- Revenue, paid subscriptions, enterprise seats, and API usage describe commercial adoption, but public figures are incomplete and not consistently defined.
Third-party estimates such as Similarweb, Sensor Tower, and Statcounter also rely on their respective observed traffic, panels, or modeling approaches. They are useful for trends, but their figures should not be averaged into a made-up “true share.” Company disclosures provide scale signals, but companies decide which products and activity count in their own user totals.
One further complication is multi-homing: a person may use ChatGPT to draft a document, Gemini to work with Gmail or Search, and another assistant for coding or research. The growth of one service does not necessarily mean a person has abandoned another.
Is ChatGPT shrinking, or just losing its lead?
The clearest evidence here is about relative share, not an absolute collapse in ChatGPT usage. A service can add users and still lose share if the overall market grows faster or rivals attract more new users. Reporting based on Sensor Tower data has described ChatGPT’s monthly active users as still increasing year over year while Gemini and Claude grew faster; see Forbes’ coverage of the estimates. That does not establish every aspect of ChatGPT’s user trajectory, but it is a useful caution against equating share loss with user decline.

Nor should all of the share ChatGPT has lost be credited to Gemini. Claude, Perplexity, Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek, Meta AI, and other products compete for attention. Sensor Tower identifies Claude as another beneficiary of the shift. Statcounter’s referral measure, meanwhile, still shows a large ChatGPT lead. The defensible conclusion is that competition is broadening, with Gemini the most consequential large-scale challenger—not that a two-company handoff is complete.
Why Gemini’s growth matters beyond its standalone app
Google has a distribution advantage that a standalone chatbot cannot easily reproduce. Gemini can be encountered through Google’s existing products and accounts, including Android, Search and AI Mode, Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Chrome, Google Workspace, NotebookLM, and Google Cloud. Alphabet describes Gemini integrations across cloud and workplace products in its Q2 2026 earnings discussion. Google’s AI plan page also presents Gemini alongside services including Gmail, Docs, NotebookLM, Search, and other Google features, with availability and feature access varying by plan and location.
This lowers the friction of trying Gemini for people who already have a Google account or use Android and Workspace. It also means a domain-visit comparison may fail to capture AI use that happens inside Google products. But distribution is not the same as intentional use: seeing an AI feature in Search does not prove a person has become a habitual Gemini user, and an expanding audience does not prove those users switched from ChatGPT.
Product quality may contribute too. Users may care about reasoning, coding, multimodal features, search-connected answers, context length, or integrations with personal files. But there is no basis in these market figures for declaring Gemini categorically better. Results vary by task, model version, account tier, feature limits, and evaluation method. Market growth can reflect reach, convenience, bundling, promotions, and product capability together.

What this means if you are choosing a paid AI plan
For a household budget, compare the service you will actually use and the benefits you would otherwise pay for—not just the chatbot’s monthly price. Google’s US plan page lists AI Plus at $9.99 per month with 2 TB of storage and higher Gemini limits, and AI Pro at $19.99 per month with 5 TB and additional Gemini and Google-product benefits. Prices, included features, usage limits, and availability can change by country and over time; check Google’s current plan page before subscribing. The captured plan information does not provide a reliable Ultra price, so it is better to check live checkout than rely on an outdated figure.
Those prices do not make Google AI automatically cheaper than ChatGPT. A fair comparison must account for storage you need, which models and features are included, usage caps, and whether you would use the bundled Google services. OpenAI’s official ChatGPT pricing page is the place to check current consumer and business plans; pricing and feature entitlements can change, so compare the live offers rather than an old price quote.

- Gemini may offer better practical value if you already pay for Google storage or spend your day in Gmail, Docs, Drive, Search, Android, or Workspace, and will use the included benefits.
- ChatGPT may fit better if your established workflows depend on OpenAI-specific tools, custom assistants, projects, voice features, or an existing ChatGPT deployment. Businesses should also assess controls and administration, not just consumer features.
- Using both can be rational if each solves a distinct task and the extra subscription is worth the cost. Do not keep two paid plans merely because market-share headlines suggest one is winning.
For workplace decisions, consumer MAU figures are especially limited. OpenAI’s 2025 enterprise report says ChatGPT served more than 7 million workplace seats, an OpenAI-reported figure that is not directly comparable with Google’s enterprise metrics. A business should compare security and data governance, admin controls, integration with its existing software, employee adoption, total cost, and the ability to evaluate outputs—not infer enterprise market leadership from consumer web traffic.

Statcounter’s April 2026 result—ChatGPT accounting for 76.85% of measured AI-chatbot referrals and Gemini 9%—is relevant to publishers because it describes referral traffic, not total assistant use. A falling share can alter where AI-referred visits originate, but it does not imply the same percentage loss in search visibility, total audience, enterprise usage, or API revenue.

Track referral sources separately, distinguish direct and search traffic from chatbot referrals, and pay attention to appearances within embedded products as well as standalone assistant websites. Referral analytics show what sends a click; they do not fully reveal which AI systems shaped a user’s research or purchase decision.

So, has Gemini caught ChatGPT?
Not on the broad evidence available. ChatGPT remains ahead in several prominent measurements, including Similarweb’s web-and-app comparison and Statcounter’s AI-referral share. At the same time, ChatGPT’s share of generative-AI website visits has fallen sharply in Similarweb’s series, Sensor Tower’s cross-platform audience measure has dropped below half, and Alphabet says Gemini’s app reached 950 million monthly active users.
The practical significance is that ChatGPT is no longer the uncontested default and Gemini has become a formidable rival. Google’s ecosystem gives it a path to reach users without requiring them to seek out a separate chatbot. Whether that reach becomes durable habit, paid adoption, or direct displacement of ChatGPT remains a different question—and the market-share figures alone do not settle it.
