ChatGPT ads are live: OpenAI began a U.S. test on February 9, 2026, and its Help Center now says ads are rolling out in the U.S., U.K., Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. Eligible Free and Go users may see clearly labeled sponsored placements below a response—not inside ChatGPT’s answer. The service remains a changing beta, with gradual access for advertisers and no reliable public performance benchmarks.
What ChatGPT ads look like
OpenAI places ads below the end of a ChatGPT response, visually separate from the answer and labeled “Sponsored.” A placement may show an advertiser’s name, logo or favicon, headline, description, image, and landing page. Depending on the conversation and available inventory, users may see one or more ads. OpenAI says a paid placement is not an endorsement by the company.
The format is intended to keep advertising distinct from the model’s response. OpenAI has also described possible future formats in which users could ask follow-up questions about an advertised product; that is a stated direction, not evidence that the feature is generally available. Ads do not appear in ChatGPT Atlas during the documented test. OpenAI’s current ads Help Center describes placement and eligibility, while its advertising principles announcement discusses the early concept.
When the test began and how it expanded
- January 16, 2026: OpenAI announced plans to test ads in the U.S. for Free and Go users.
- February 9, 2026: The company began rolling out the live U.S. test to a subset of logged-in adults.
- May 5, 2026: OpenAI announced beta self-serve Ads Manager, CPC bidding, expanded measurement, and agency and technology partnerships.
- By August 2026: OpenAI’s Help Center described ads as rolling out in the U.S., U.K., Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.
These milestones describe a product in development, not a fixed global launch. Availability, formats, and buying options can change as the beta evolves. See OpenAI’s user information and May Ads Manager announcement.
Who may see ads—and who does not
| Account or plan | Ads during the documented rollout |
|---|---|
| Free | May see ads |
| Go | May see ads |
| Plus | No ads |
| Pro | No ads |
| Business | No ads |
| Enterprise | No ads |
| Edu | No ads |
| Accounts identified as belonging to users under 18 | No ads |
“May see” matters: OpenAI is rolling the feature out gradually, and an ad appears only when an eligible, relevant placement is available. Country, account status, age signals, and product availability can affect what a person sees. OpenAI says logged-out experiences are designed to show ads appropriate for all audiences because it lacks account age information; that is distinct from the logged-in plan rules. The Help Center also lists exceptions: ads are not shown in Temporary Chats, after image generation, in political conversations, or near sensitive user contexts. Its current documentation says ads do not appear when a user is logged out, while separately describing an all-ages design for logged-out ad experiences; because these statements describe evolving product behavior, do not assume a logged-out session will always have the same ad experience. Check the current Help Center guidance for the latest rollout and placement rules.
Do ads change ChatGPT’s answers?
OpenAI says no. The company says ads run separately from the chat model, advertisers cannot shape or rank its answers, and the answer is meant to be optimized for usefulness independently of the ad auction. That is OpenAI’s stated technical and policy position, not an independently audited guarantee. The distinction to keep in mind is that the ad system can use conversational context to select a placement, but advertisers do not receive the conversation or directly control the answer.
#1 Best Overall
Even with a “Sponsored” label and separate placement, an ad immediately following an answer can feel like a recommendation. It is not necessarily one: evaluate the sponsored unit as an advertisement, and distinguish it from advice or product information in ChatGPT’s response. OpenAI’s position is set out in its ads guidance.

How ad selection and targeting work
OpenAI says the system can consider the current conversation’s context and intent, the ad’s landing page, advertiser copy and context hints, and—if personalization is enabled—selected signals from a user’s wider ChatGPT activity. Depending on settings, past chats, memory, and ad interactions such as hiding or engaging with an ad may also inform selection.
For advertisers, this is not simply conventional keyword bidding. OpenAI describes context hints as topics, conversations, or keywords where an ad may be relevant; they are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee that an ad will appear in a particular conversation. Delivery also depends on eligible inventory, relevance, campaign settings, and bids. A user might express purchase intent in ordinary language without using a marketer’s chosen keyword, but a brand cannot count on a specific prompt triggering its ad. The distinction is detailed in OpenAI’s Ads basics.
What advertisers receive—and user privacy controls
OpenAI says advertisers do not receive a user’s chat history, memories, name or email, precise location, IP address, sensitive information, or personal details. They receive aggregated, non-identifying reporting such as views and clicks. If a user chooses to message an advertiser through an ad, that advertiser can see the messages sent directly to it in that interaction.

This does not mean conversation context is never processed for advertising: OpenAI says its ad system may use the current thread, and broader activity when personalization is on. Eligible Free and Go users can manage the documented controls at Settings → Ads controls:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Turn off ad personalization: ads may still use the current chat thread, but OpenAI says other chat threads, ad history, and topics will not inform ads.
- Use Temporary Chat: OpenAI says ads are not shown in these chats.
- Hide, dismiss, or report an ad: use the controls attached to a placement to give feedback or report it.
- Review why an ad appeared: inspect the explanation provided with the placement.
- Clear data used for ads: OpenAI says deleted ad data can take up to 30 days to be removed from its systems.
Turning off personalization is not the same as removing ads. The separate Ads-Free Free experience removes ads but comes with lower usage limits and reduced access to some features; OpenAI says tools such as image generation or deep research may not be available there. Plus and Pro are ad-free paid plans, without that specific Ads-Free Free trade-off. Current options and qualifications are in the OpenAI Help Center.
Which advertisers and ads are allowed?
OpenAI says early advertiser categories include lifestyle and household goods, consumer products, local services, travel and experiences, digital products, and education. Some financial-services, healthcare, and legal advertisers may be considered case by case and can face additional eligibility checks or manual review.
Rank #3
OpenAI’s ad policies restrict or disallow political advertising, gambling and betting, alcohol, tobacco and nicotine, recreational drugs, dating and sexual-content products or services, misleading health or wellness claims, scams and fraud, phishing and impersonation, counterfeit products, certain financial services, some sensitive or contested social-issue advertising, and ads that imitate ChatGPT or other OpenAI interfaces. Eligibility of an advertiser category is separate from placement safety: even an otherwise eligible ad should not appear beside a sensitive conversation under the stated rules. See the current OpenAI Advertising Policies.
How businesses can buy ChatGPT ads
OpenAI has introduced a beta self-serve Ads Manager and says access is being opened gradually; advertisers may need account verification. It has also named agency partners Dentsu, Omnicom, Publicis, and WPP, and technology partners Adobe, Criteo, Kargo, Pacvue, and StackAdapt. Partner participation does not make the product a mature, universally available network.

Buying models, bid guidance, and measurement
| Buying model | What the advertiser pays for | How bidding works |
|---|---|---|
| CPM / Reach | Impressions, priced per 1,000 | Set a maximum CPM bid |
| CPC / Clicks | Valid clicks | Set a maximum CPC bid |
OpenAI describes a relevance-weighted, second-price auction. Its current guidance recommends starting maximum CPC bids at about $3–$5 per valid click. That is a suggested starting bid—not a guaranteed rate, required minimum, observed market average, or promise of delivery. Actual costs depend on auction conditions, relevance, campaign configuration, and inventory.
Reporting can include impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate (CTR), average CPC, average CPM, and conversions. OpenAI says advertisers can use pixel-based measurement, the Conversions API, and UTM parameters, then analyze click-through traffic in existing analytics systems. Measurement is aggregated rather than a feed of individual conversations. OpenAI says it does not yet publish reliable performance benchmarks by industry, campaign type, or advertiser, so comparisons with established channels need to come from an advertiser’s own properly tracked results. Details are in Ads basics and the advertiser Help Center.

For casual users
Ads may be an acceptable trade-off for continued access to Free or Go, but users who do not want them can consider Ads-Free Free or an ad-free paid plan. Ads-Free Free has lower limits and reduced feature access; Plus and Pro are ad-free according to OpenAI’s current plan guidance.

For privacy-conscious users
Turning off ad personalization limits the historical signals OpenAI says it uses, but it does not remove ads or necessarily stop current-thread context from informing them. Temporary Chat avoids ads according to the Help Center; Ads-Free Free is the option that removes ads without moving to a paid plan, with the usage trade-offs described above.
For advertisers
Treat the beta as an incremental channel to test, not a proven replacement for search, social, or marketplace advertising. Conversational context could reach people while they research or compare, and CPC buying plus conversion tools make a measured pilot possible. But context hints are not exact-match targeting, access and inventory are evolving, and public industry benchmarks are not established.
A controlled campaign should measure whether it adds reach beyond existing channels, whether clicks show genuine consideration, and what conversion rate, effective CPC, and cost per acquisition result. Check that UTMs, pixel or Conversions API events, and site analytics agree; ensure the landing page fulfills the ad’s promise; and monitor approval, pacing, budgets, and billing. Set an explicit test budget and evaluate results against your own channel-specific economics rather than assuming that OpenAI’s suggested bid range predicts profitable traffic.
What the beta means now
OpenAI is building an advertising layer around conversational intent while stating that paid placements do not alter the model’s answers and that advertisers do not receive users’ conversations. Whether users trust ads beside answers—and whether advertisers can achieve repeatable performance—remains to be demonstrated. For now, the most accurate way to view ChatGPT Ads is as an available but evolving beta: a possible new channel for measured experiments, not a mature advertising network with predictable results.
