Changelly is best understood as a crypto-swap and purchase service, not one conventional exchange with a single public order book. Its instant-exchange product routes a swap from a deposit you send to an address you specify; fees, delivery time, eligibility, and whether verification is required depend on the product and transaction. Changelly describes the instant-swap flow as non-custodial, but that does not guarantee immediate settlement or prevent a transaction from being held for review.

Before using it, compare the amount you will receive, confirm the network and recipient address, and check the current terms for your location. “Leading,” “secure,” and “instant” are not independent guarantees of ranking, safety, or completion time.

What is Changelly?

Changelly says it was founded in 2015. Its broader ecosystem includes several distinct products; their custody, fees, verification rules, and availability are not interchangeable. Changelly’s product overview describes the ecosystem and its instant exchange.

  • Changelly Instant Exchange: one-off crypto swaps in which you send an asset and specify a wallet address for the output.
  • Changelly Buy and Sell: fiat-to-crypto purchases and crypto-to-fiat sales fulfilled with payment partners. Provider rules and charges can differ.
  • Changelly DeFi Swap: decentralized exchange aggregation within a blockchain ecosystem.
  • Changelly PRO: a separate, custodial, account-based trading platform. Changelly says PRO launched in 2020.
  • API and partner products: infrastructure Changelly offers to wallets, platforms, and businesses.

For instant exchanges, Changelly says it works with multiple trading platforms to find offers and complete swaps. It is therefore more useful to think of it as an intermediary or routing service than as a single visible order book. The route and available liquidity can vary by pair, provider, region, and transaction conditions. Changelly promotes support for more than 1,000 cryptocurrencies; a company partner presentation claims more than 185 blockchains. These are company-reported coverage figures, not a guarantee that a particular asset and network are available to you now. Changelly’s asset claim and its partner presentation describe those figures.

How a Changelly crypto swap works

You need a receiving wallet that supports the asset and network you intend to use. Changelly says its instant-exchange service is not itself a wallet and does not provide a normal long-term wallet balance for your deposit. In a typical swap, you send funds to a transaction-specific deposit address and the output is sent to the destination address you enter. Changelly’s app information explains the wallet requirement.

  1. Choose the asset and network you will send, then select the asset and network you want to receive.
  2. Choose a floating or fixed rate if both are offered. Review the displayed estimated or protected output, minimum and maximum amounts, and any listed charges.
  3. Enter the destination wallet address. Check it against the receiving wallet and confirm that the wallet supports the selected network.
  4. Check whether the asset requires a memo, destination tag, or other identifier. Review the order details before proceeding.
  5. Confirm the transaction and send the requested amount to the deposit address shown for that order. For a fixed-rate order, the amount and payment window matter.
  6. Wait for the sending blockchain’s required confirmations and for the swap and outgoing transfer to complete. Check the status and, when useful, the transaction hash in a blockchain explorer.
  7. Verify receipt in the destination wallet. A wallet may take time to display a newly received asset even after an outgoing transaction has been broadcast.

A ticker alone does not identify the right route. For example, a token such as USDT can exist on different networks. Changelly warns about network variants and about memo or tag requirements for assets such as XRP, XLM, XEM, EOS, and BNB where applicable. Sending through an unsupported network, entering the wrong address, or omitting a required identifier can delay recovery or make it impossible. See Changelly’s transaction guidance.

What “non-custodial” means—and what it does not

For the instant-exchange flow, the user generally sends crypto for a particular transaction rather than keeping a standing balance in a Changelly account; the output is directed to the address the user provides. If that destination is a self-custody wallet, the user controls its private keys. This is different from leaving assets in a custodial exchange account.

Non-custodial does not mean trustless, risk-free, or immune to intervention. Changelly and its liquidity partners participate in routing and processing, and Changelly says its risk systems can put a transaction on hold and require verification. A swap can be delayed, rejected, manually processed, or refunded. Changelly’s troubleshooting guidance describes risk-related holds.

How fast are swaps?

“Instant” describes the intended convenience of starting a swap, not a guaranteed settlement time. Completion depends on the sending chain’s confirmation requirements and congestion, the pair and liquidity route, partner processing, whether the correct amount arrives, and whether a transaction is reviewed. The receiving wallet may also take time to display the output.

Changelly’s materials describe floating-rate deposit addresses as usable for approximately three hours, while fixed-rate orders have a shorter payment window. That address validity is not a promise that the entire swap will finish in that time. Use the order’s displayed status and payment instructions rather than assuming a universal completion estimate. Transaction status and timing details are published by Changelly.

Fixed versus floating rates

Rate type How it works Main trade-off
Floating The displayed output is an estimate and can change with market conditions while the transaction is processed. It may track changing market pricing, but the final amount can differ from the initial estimate.
Fixed The quoted output is intended to remain unchanged if the user sends the exact amount and the payment is detected within the order’s protected window. Changelly describes windows generally lasting 15–20 minutes, with 20 minutes applying to certain currencies. It offers more quote certainty, but the rate may be less favorable; late or mismatched payments can require manual handling or a refund.

Choose floating when you accept price movement and want to compare the current estimate; choose fixed when certainty during the payment window matters more than the possibility of a better floating result. Neither option removes blockchain confirmation delays. Changelly’s terms and transaction FAQ explain the rate conditions.

What does Changelly charge?

Changelly’s published terms identify a 0.25% exchange/service fee for floating-rate crypto exchanges, plus a separate variable network fee. The network cost can change with the asset, congestion, and route, so 0.25% is not the complete cost of every swap. Fixed-rate pricing uses a dynamic rate or fee structure intended to protect the quote from market movement; judge it by the final amount received rather than by a single advertised percentage. Changelly’s terms describe the fee structure.

For fiat purchases, the selected provider can set charges and limits that vary by payment method, country, asset, and transaction size. For crypto-to-fiat sales, Changelly’s fee FAQ gives 3.95% as a minimum fee indication, not a universal rate; it says the final cost depends on the pair, country, market conditions, volatility, and other factors. Review the checkout quote for the actual transaction. See the purchase FAQ and the fee FAQ.

Before sending funds, compare the final delivered amount with another suitable route, including any network costs and spread. Check the order’s minimum and maximum in the transaction flow: a general asset count does not establish a usable limit for your particular pair.

Does Changelly require KYC?

Not necessarily before every instant swap, but Changelly can request identity checks or additional information during or after a transaction. Its materials say some transactions may be initiated without an account or advance KYC; its terms also reserve the right to apply AML/KYC procedures to users, wallet addresses, or specific transactions, including requests for source-of-funds information. It is not accurate to treat Changelly as a guaranteed “no-KYC” service. Changelly’s app information and its terms set out these qualifications.

If a risk check triggers a Hold status, Changelly says verification may be completed through the relevant account, web interface, or app. It also describes contacting its compliance team about advance verification, but that does not guarantee that future transactions will not be reviewed. Use only the official transaction interface or support channels for identity requests.

Is Changelly safe?

Safety is not one property of a swap service. Consider the different risks separately:

  • Blockchain and address risk: Crypto transfers are generally difficult or impossible to reverse. A wrong address, unsupported network, or missing memo can result in loss or a lengthy recovery process.
  • Platform and partner risk: The swap relies on Changelly’s routing and, depending on the transaction, partner processing. Funds can be delayed, screened, or require manual handling.
  • Wallet and device risk: A compromised device, browser, email account, or wallet can expose credentials or redirect a transfer. Verify addresses independently and never disclose a seed phrase or private key to anyone claiming to be support.
  • Compliance risk: Non-custodial routing does not preclude a transaction hold or request for information.
  • Quote risk: Floating output can change; fixed pricing is conditional on amount and timing.

Changelly PRO lists features including two-factor authentication, email confirmations, and withdrawal whitelists, but those are features of its separate custodial trading product, not a guarantee against risks in instant swaps. PRO’s product page describes those account features. The available product materials do not establish an independent basis for calling Changelly the safest exchange, guaranteeing refunds, or declaring it safe for every transaction size.

Where is Changelly available?

Availability depends on the product, location, and potentially the provider fulfilling a purchase or sale. Changelly’s general terms list restricted locations that include the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, and Turkey; Changelly PRO has separate terms and restrictions. A general claim of worldwide availability would therefore be misleading. Check the applicable current terms and whether the specific transaction is offered before sending funds. General terms and PRO terms cover different products.

Some purchase pages may show fiat services in a location where another Changelly product is restricted, because purchases can be provided by third parties with their own eligibility and verification rules. Changelly’s purchase FAQ notes provider-specific requirements, including identity and address checks for some U.S. purchase flows. Do not infer that access to one checkout means all Changelly products are available to you. See the buy-crypto FAQ and the fiat provider KYC/AML policy.

What to do if a transaction is delayed, held, or fails

Changelly’s transaction interface uses statuses that help identify where a swap is in the process. The label describes the order state, not necessarily the cause of a delay.

  • Created: the transaction request was generated.
  • Waiting for payment: the deposit has not been detected.
  • Hold: a risk or compliance review is required.
  • Confirming: blockchain confirmations are pending.
  • Exchanging: funds are being processed through a trading partner.
  • Sending: the output is being sent to the recipient wallet.
  • Finished: the output has been sent.
  • Failed: the transaction did not complete.
  • Not paid: no deposit was detected.
  • Expired: the fixed-rate payment window elapsed.

If a transaction does not complete as expected, take these steps:

  1. Check the order status and transaction ID in the official interface. Keep the ID private.
  2. Look up the deposit hash on the sending blockchain’s explorer to confirm whether it was broadcast and how many confirmations it has.
  3. Recheck the recipient address, asset, network, and any required memo or tag.
  4. Contact official support through Changelly’s support portal or the transaction interface. Do not send more funds unless official support clearly instructs you to do so through a verified channel.
  5. Keep the transaction ID, blockchain hashes, timestamps, screenshots, and fee details. If a refund is offered, verify the refund address carefully.
  6. Respond to any compliance request only through the official interface or support channel associated with the transaction.

Changelly says failed or unprocessable transactions may be manually processed or refunded depending on the reason. Its terms mention refund periods of approximately 1–7 business days in some cases; this is not a guaranteed timing for every failure. A refund may also involve network or market-related costs. Troubleshooting guidance and the terms describe possible outcomes.

Changelly Instant Exchange versus Changelly PRO

Feature Instant Exchange Changelly PRO
Primary use Wallet-to-wallet swaps and purchases Account-based trading
Custody model Marketed as non-custodial for instant swaps Custodial exchange account

Changelly describes PRO as a separate full-featured custodial exchange launched in 2020. Choose it only if you need account-based trading tools and understand that its custody and trading risks differ from a one-off swap. PRO’s overview and Changelly’s ecosystem FAQ distinguish the products.

Buying or selling crypto with fiat

Changelly Buy aggregates third-party providers; it is not necessarily the card processor or bank-transfer provider. Payment methods, limits, identity checks, and timing can vary by provider and country. A provider may request identity or address verification, and payment processing can take longer when checks are needed. Changelly’s purchase FAQ gives examples of provider-specific requirements, so a statement on an individual asset page should not be generalized to every user or transaction.

Changelly Sell likewise depends on partner fulfillment and the displayed terms. Check the actual quote, provider, supported payout method, and verification requirements before confirming. For either direction, treat the checkout terms as transaction-specific rather than assuming one universal fee or processing time. Changelly’s buying guide provides its published explanation of provider variation.

How to decide whether Changelly is the right fit

Changelly can suit someone who already has a compatible wallet, wants a straightforward supported swap, and values convenience over maintaining an exchange balance. It is a weaker fit if a transaction cannot tolerate delays, the user needs a guaranteed no-KYC route, or the user needs order-book tools, fiat account features, or derivatives. Large or privacy-sensitive transactions deserve particular caution because a review or recovery process can have greater consequences.

Before choosing a route, compare the final delivered amount and consider these factors:

  • Does the exact pair and network appear in the transaction flow, and does the receiving wallet support it?
  • Is the quoted amount acceptable after the exchange price, network costs, and any provider fees?
  • Would a fixed quote be worth its pricing trade-off, and can you meet its payment window?
  • Are you eligible for this specific product in your jurisdiction?
  • Can you accept possible identity or source-of-funds checks?
  • Is this a one-off swap, or do you need repeat trading, visible order books, fiat rails, or advanced orders?

For order-book trading and fiat services, a conventional centralized exchange such as Coinbase, Kraken, or Gemini is a different category: it typically involves an account, custody, and platform-specific verification. For on-chain self-custody swaps, Uniswap or Jupiter may suit technically capable users on supported networks, but they introduce smart-contract, gas, slippage, and network-specific risks. Other wallet-to-wallet swap services include ChangeNOW, SimpleSwap, and SwapZone; their current fees, KYC rules, and geographic availability should be checked directly rather than presumed to be better or worse.

If you are choosing a wallet rather than a swap route, distinguish software wallets used for convenience from hardware wallets intended to reduce online exposure. Hardware wallets still require careful recovery-phrase management. Changelly lists wallet partners such as Exodus, Ledger, and Coinomi; inclusion is not a blanket endorsement. A wallet and an exchange solve different problems.
