Choose CGMiner for direct pool mining and hands-on control; choose NiceHash for simpler setup, automatic algorithm switching, and Bitcoin-denominated payouts. They are not direct substitutes: CGMiner is mining software, while NiceHash is a hash-power marketplace with its own mining applications. The right choice depends on your hardware and whether you want to mine a particular network or sell hash power.

A more useful comparison depends on the question: CGMiner versus NiceHash Miner for desktop software, direct pool mining versus NiceHash as a mining strategy, or a CGMiner-compatible ASIC pointed at a pool versus one pointed at NiceHash.
What CGMiner does
CGMiner is a command-line mining program, best known today for compatible ASIC and FPGA setups. It connects a miner to a pool or other mining endpoint; it does not select a coin marketplace or determine the pool’s payout policy. Its upstream GitHub repository is archived, so do not assume the upstream project is a currently evolving, general-purpose GPU miner. The repository’s README documents pool configuration, failover, quotas, scheduling, temperature controls and API options.
Hardware support is not universal. It depends on the exact build, device protocol, firmware and manufacturer. Some ASICs run a CGMiner-derived or compatible engine inside their firmware, with pool settings managed through the device’s web interface. That does not necessarily mean the upstream CGMiner program can be installed directly on any ASIC. Check the device or firmware documentation and the upstream ASIC support list; a listed device may be historical rather than a practical current purchase.

What NiceHash does
NiceHash combines a marketplace for hash power with tools for miners. With NiceHash Miner, the user’s computer benchmarks supported hardware and can switch among supported algorithms. The hash power is offered to buyers through the marketplace; users generally receive Bitcoin rather than necessarily receiving the coin associated with the work performed. In other words, using NiceHash is not the same as directly mining Bitcoin on a GPU. See the NiceHash Miner project for its stated operation and requirements.
NiceHash Miner and QuickMiner are different applications. Miner is the broader auto-miner with multiple plugins and algorithm options. QuickMiner is a separate, simpler Windows-focused product built around Excavator and optimization tools. Their hardware coverage, controls and algorithms can differ and change; check the documentation for the exact release and your GPU before installing. How they differ in practice
Hardware and operating system
CGMiner is most relevant when you already have compatible ASIC or FPGA hardware and a supported way to configure it. It is commonly encountered in Linux-based mining environments and ASIC firmware. NiceHash Miner is primarily for Windows desktop users: its repository lists Windows 10 or newer, 64-bit, and specifies hardware and software prerequisites such as CPU AES support for CPU mining, OpenCL for AMD mining and a supported NVIDIA compute capability. Requirements can change, so confirm them on the project page for the release you intend to use. Do not treat QuickMiner’s support as interchangeable with Miner’s.

For a modern gaming GPU or CPU, NiceHash Miner is generally the more natural candidate than upstream CGMiner. For ASICs, compare the firmware’s pool options and compatibility: you might point a device to a direct pool or, where supported, to NiceHash. An ASIC can use CGMiner-compatible software locally while connecting to NiceHash as its destination, so these options can coexist.
Setup and control
NiceHash is usually easier to begin with: install the application, configure a wallet address or the available NiceHash wallet option, benchmark devices, and start mining. Automation reduces the need to pick a pool and manually follow each algorithm, but also means less direct control over the marketplace route.
CGMiner requires more operator knowledge. You need a compatible device, a pool or endpoint, worker credentials, and appropriate hardware settings. In return, you can manage pool selection, failover, scheduling and monitoring more directly, and integrate the miner with scripts or external systems. That flexibility makes it a better fit for technically managed ASIC deployments than for a casual desktop user seeking a guided setup.

Coins, pools and payouts
With CGMiner, you normally select a network’s pool and receive whatever currency and payment treatment that pool supports. The pool determines its own fees, minimum payout, schedule, stale-share rules and any account or location requirements.
With NiceHash, you sell hash power and generally receive BTC through NiceHash’s payout system. That can suit someone who wants Bitcoin-denominated proceeds without managing a coin-specific pool. The trade-off is reduced control over which network ultimately uses the hash power, the pool behind the marketplace and the marketplace’s pay-rate mechanics. If you specifically want a coin such as Litecoin, Dogecoin or Bitcoin Cash, compare direct pool mining for that network against the relevant NiceHash option rather than assuming the payout models are equivalent. Fees and costs
There is no single “CGMiner fee” to compare with NiceHash: CGMiner is software, and the pool or endpoint sets its fees and payout terms. Firmware may also have its own fee. NiceHash involves marketplace and service economics, and there may be wallet, payout or withdrawal costs. Rates and thresholds can change; consult NiceHash’s current official fee and payment information before deciding rather than relying on an old percentage. Which is more profitable?
Neither is universally more profitable. Results depend on the hardware, algorithm, electricity rate, accepted and rejected shares, uptime, pool or marketplace economics, coin and pay-rate movements, power and cooling, firmware settings, and withdrawal costs. NiceHash itself notes that online estimates can differ from figures displayed in NiceHash Miner; see its explanation of profitability differences.
Use the same equipment, wall power, electricity rate, measurement period, currency and market timestamp when comparing options. Account for temperature, fan settings and downtime as well as hashrate. A larger displayed hashrate alone does not establish better earnings.

Do not compare one application’s hashrate with another service’s estimated earnings and conclude that the software caused the difference: the algorithms, payout models, hardware settings and fees may not match.

Which should you use for your hardware?
- Bitcoin ASIC: Use direct pool mining as a baseline if you want pool control and that pool’s payout terms. Compare NiceHash if BTC payouts or selling SHA-256 hash power better matches your goals. Confirm the ASIC firmware supports the chosen destination.
- Scrypt ASIC: Compare a direct Scrypt pool with a compatible NiceHash route; do not assume their economics or payout results are the same.
- Modern GPU: Start by checking NiceHash Miner’s current support and plugin requirements. QuickMiner is a separate option, not a guarantee of broad AMD or NVIDIA compatibility.
- CPU-only system: NiceHash Miner documents CPU mining, subject to current requirements. Verify whether the current QuickMiner release fits your hardware rather than assuming it does.
- Mining farm or automation-heavy setup: CGMiner-style direct configuration, device firmware and external monitoring may offer better operational control. Confirm the software and hardware are supported and maintained before deploying at scale.
- Privacy-sensitive operator: Direct pool mining avoids dependence on a centralized marketplace account, though the pool remains a third party. Consider both services’ account, telemetry and custody implications.
Basic setup patterns
CGMiner: connect to a pool
A generic command-line pattern is:
cgminer -o stratum+tcp://POOL_HOST:PORT -u WORKER_NAME -p WORKER_PASSWORDThis is a template, not a universal command. The pool’s URL, port, credentials, TLS requirements and device-specific flags vary. Some ASICs configure pools through a web interface, and some require vendor firmware rather than a manually installed upstream build. CGMiner can also be configured with multiple pool entries for failover, but follow the relevant hardware and pool documentation rather than copying a command blindly.
NiceHash Miner: benchmark and start
- Download the installer or ZIP from the official releases page, and review the release notes and requirements.
- Install or extract the package and launch
NiceHashMiner.exeif using the archive. - Configure the supported wallet option and select the devices you want to use.
- Allow benchmarking to complete; then review detected devices and available algorithms before starting.
- Set a minimum-profit threshold if you want mining to stop when expected returns fall below your chosen level, where that option is available in your release.
- Monitor actual earnings, power draw, temperatures, rejected shares and uptime rather than assuming the initial estimate is guaranteed.
Release details and bundled plugins change. For example, NiceHash Miner’s release notes have documented algorithm removals, hardware-specific fixes and differences between preinstalled and optional plugins. Verify the notes for the version you download instead of relying on a static algorithm list.

Security and operational cautions
- Download only from the official CGMiner repository, NiceHash project pages or your hardware manufacturer. Verify signatures or checksums when the publisher provides them.
- Antivirus products may flag mining software, and an exclusion weakens a protection boundary. Do not treat disabling protection as a routine setup step; verify the download and understand the risk first.
- NiceHash Miner can use third-party miner plugins. NiceHash’s release guidance warns that it cannot guarantee every third-party miner and advises against keeping sensitive data or important wallet access on the mining computer.
- Use a dedicated or isolated mining machine where practical. Do not store valuable private keys on a machine running miners or plugins.
- Protect NiceHash account access and consider the custodial risk of leaving funds on a centralized service. Review current wallet and payout options in the NiceHash wallet guidance.
- For ASICs, monitor cooling, ventilation, power capacity, noise and local requirements. Poor thermal or electrical conditions can erase the value of a seemingly profitable setup.
