Captions, an AI video startup founded by former Microsoft engineer Gaurav Misra, announced a $60 million Series C on July 9, 2024. Index Ventures led the round; existing backers Kleiner Perkins, Sequoia Capital and Andreessen Horowitz joined new investors Adobe Ventures, HubSpot Ventures and actor Jared Leto. The company’s valuation was reported at about $500 million. The financing was part of a shift from a camera app toward a broader AI video-production platform—not a current funding announcement.
What Captions raised and who invested
Contemporaneous coverage reported the $60 million Series C and approximately $500 million valuation on July 9, 2024. Because Captions is privately held, that valuation was a reported financing figure, not a public-market price or an independently established measure of the company’s present worth. VentureBeat’s report attributed the valuation to founder Gaurav Misra.

“Top VCs” is a promotional shorthand, not a measure of performance. The investor list shows who participated; it does not disclose each investor’s contribution, terms, board rights or due diligence. Leto was not the lead investor. The report also noted his earlier investment in AI-video company Pika, making his participation a cultural and entertainment-industry signal rather than proof of Captions’ technology or business prospects.
From camera app to AI video suite
Misra founded Captions in 2021 after working as a Microsoft engineer, according to the 2024 report. The early product was a camera app built around people recording direct-to-camera videos. The company later repositioned itself around AI tools that help edit, adapt or generate video. That is a change in the product’s central promise: from helping someone record themselves to helping a creator or team produce more of the workflow inside one application.

What the product can do
Captions’ listed capabilities span conventional footage and synthetic media. Depending on the plan and feature, users can add and style captions, make AI-assisted edits, correct eye contact, create short clips, draft scripts, resize content for social platforms, and edit through chat. The suite also includes dubbing and lip-sync translation, AI voiceovers and voice cloning, avatars or digital twins, and generated images, video, music, sound effects and B-roll. This breadth is the strategic proposition: a user might move from source footage or a script to an edited, captioned, localized or avatar-led video without stitching together several specialist apps. Captions is therefore not just a text-to-video generator. It still supports workflows built around footage someone records, while also offering ways to create material without filming every shot or presenter.

Why the company attracted financing
The investment case is plausible because video is central to creator and marketing work, while recording, editing, captioning and localizing frequent content can take time and money. A suite that combines those tasks could appeal to individual creators as well as social and marketing teams. HubSpot Ventures’ participation is consistent with the relevance of business content and marketing workflows; Adobe Ventures’ participation connects the round to the broader creative-software market. Those are reasonable readings of the investor mix, not disclosed statements of investment rationale.

What the 2024 usage figures do—and do not—show
In the 2024 coverage, Captions said more than 10 million users had created videos on the platform and that users were making more than 3 million videos per month. It also said newer AI features had accelerated adoption. The report named ESPN, Kevin O’Leary, Justin Kan and Unnecessary Inventions as users. These are company-reported or reported company figures from 2024, not independently audited metrics or evidence of current usage. The account does not specify whether the user total means registered users, active creators or another measure.
Those numbers indicate reported product activity, but they do not answer the questions a financier or customer would need to assess business quality: paid conversion, retention, revenue, gross margins after model and video-generation costs, or the amount of repeat usage after the novelty of generation fades. The reported valuation cannot resolve those unknowns.

How Captions fits among video tools
Captions overlaps with mobile editors, social-video repurposing tools, avatar platforms, dubbing products and generative-media systems. Its advantage is potential convenience across categories; its risk is that breadth may not match the depth of a specialist product. The most relevant alternative depends on the work being done.

Captions’ credit-based plans make the effective cost depend on the length of generated content, the model used and how many iterations a project takes. The official help documentation last modified March 27, 2026, listed Pro at $9.99 per month with 200 monthly credits; the pricing page separately displayed the higher plans in the table. Check the current plan details for the platform and region you use, then run a representative project before committing to a high-volume subscription.
Risks to consider before using synthetic video
- Consent and likeness: obtain documented permission before creating or distributing a digital twin or cloned voice, and retain the consent record.
- Disclosure and deception: label synthetic or materially altered video where appropriate. A generated spokesperson or testimonial can mislead viewers if presented as an actual person’s unaltered statement.
- Human review: check facts, pronunciation, visual artifacts, translation, tone and brand safety before publication. Automated dubbing may preserve literal meaning while losing cultural nuance.
- Data and commercial terms: sensitive brands and regulated teams should verify content ownership, privacy and data handling, training-data exclusion, access controls, review processes and commercial-use rights against their requirements. The product and pricing pages cited here do not establish that every enterprise control or compliance standard is met.
- Cost predictability: estimate credit use with a typical final video, including revisions and generated assets, rather than assuming the subscription price is the full production cost.
Choosing a tool for the job
- Consider Captions when short-form social production benefits from editing, captions, localization and AI generation in one workflow.
- Compare Synthesia or HeyGen when presenter-led business video, avatars or multilingual communication are the primary need.
- Consider Descript when transcript-driven editing and management of long recordings matter more than synthetic presenters.
- For cinematic or experimental text-to-video work, assess a dedicated generative-video product rather than assuming a broad editing suite is the best specialist tool.
The funding announcement established that investors were willing to back Captions’ product direction in 2024. It did not establish profitability, durable market leadership or that the company fulfilled every announced research plan. Its commercial test is whether creators and teams repeatedly value the consolidated workflow enough to pay for it—and whether the output quality, controls and economics hold up in real production.
