Yes, but only at participating cardless ATMs. You need an eligible bank debit card in Apple Wallet, an ATM that supports contactless withdrawals with that card, and the card’s ATM PIN. Apple Pay alone—and a contactless symbol by itself—does not guarantee that a withdrawal will work.
This guidance is for U.S. users; Apple Pay and bank ATM features vary by country, issuer, card and machine. At a compatible ATM, your iPhone or Apple Watch presents the debit card in Wallet. The cash comes from that card’s bank account, not from Apple Pay as a separate balance.
What you need
- An iPhone or Apple Watch set up with Apple Wallet and the eligible debit card.
- A card issuer that supports mobile-wallet ATM withdrawals, and an ATM that accepts that card and its payment network for cash withdrawals.
- The debit card’s ATM PIN. Device authentication does not generally replace it.
- A charged, working device, enough available funds, and an account and card that are not locked or otherwise restricted.
Apple requires a supported card from a participating issuer for Apple Pay. Check with your bank if you are unsure whether your specific debit card is eligible. Apple’s guide to where Apple Pay is accepted explains general card and merchant compatibility; the bank and ATM operator determine whether cash withdrawals are supported.
How to withdraw cash with an iPhone
- Find an ATM displaying the contactless symbol or explicitly marked for cardless withdrawals. An issuer’s ATM locator is the best way to check a particular machine.
- Open Wallet and select the eligible debit card you want to use.
- Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID or your iPhone passcode if prompted.
- Hold the top of the iPhone near the ATM’s contactless reader and wait for the machine to recognize the card.
- Enter the debit card’s ATM PIN on the keypad.
- Choose Withdraw, select or enter an amount, and follow the ATM prompts. Take your cash and receipt, if offered.
Apple’s ordinary in-store payment flow may use a side-button double-click, but an ATM’s prompts and Wallet behavior can differ. Follow the machine’s instructions and authenticate on your device if requested.

How to withdraw cash with an Apple Watch
- Open Wallet on the Watch, or double-click the side button to bring up the default card, then select the eligible debit card if needed.
- Hold the Watch display close to the ATM’s contactless reader.
- Enter the debit card’s ATM PIN on the ATM keypad and follow its withdrawal prompts.
The Watch must have the debit card set up, and the ATM must support contactless cash access. A Watch that works for store purchases will not necessarily work at every ATM.
Which banks and cards work?
A bank debit card is the normal choice. It must be enabled for ATM withdrawals, accepted by the machine, and associated with a working PIN. Bank policies differ, and support at a bank’s own ATMs does not mean the same card will work at another bank’s machines.

- Chase: Chase says eligible consumer and business debit cards can be used at Chase cardless ATMs with a phone or smartwatch. Select the card in the digital wallet, tap at the contactless symbol, enter the PIN and follow the prompts. Chase says cardless withdrawals have the same limits as physical-card withdrawals; its page says Chase credit cards and ATM-only cards are not currently eligible. See Chase’s ATM information for current details.
- Bank of America: Its instructions say to select the Bank of America debit card in a digital wallet, tap the contactless reader and enter the PIN. Use the Bank of America ATM locator and look for “Cardless ATM” to check a location. A reader does not guarantee that outside-bank cards are accepted.
- Wells Fargo: Wells Fargo says customers can use a digital wallet instead of a physical Wells Fargo debit card at its ATMs displaying the Contactless Symbol. Not all locations are necessarily equipped; check its ATM and branch locator help and confirm any account-specific restrictions.
These are examples, not a complete list of participating banks. Check both your card issuer’s policy and the specific ATM’s capabilities, especially when using an out-of-network machine.
Apple Pay, Apple Cash and Apple Card are different
| What you have | What it means at an ATM |
|---|---|
| Debit card in Apple Wallet | The main cardless-withdrawal option, but only at a compatible ATM that accepts the card. |
| Apple Pay | A way to use eligible cards stored in Wallet; it is not itself a bank account or a cash balance. |
| Apple Cash | A separate balance. For dependable ATM access, transfer it to a linked bank account or eligible debit card first, then withdraw through that account. See Apple’s Apple Cash information for transfer details and eligibility. |
| Apple Card | A credit card, not a conventional bank debit card. Do not assume it provides ordinary debit-style ATM access. Credit-card ATM transactions, where available, may be treated as cash advances with separate costs. |
Fees and withdrawal limits
Apple says it does not charge an extra fee for using Apple Pay. That does not make the ATM withdrawal free: your bank may charge its usual fee, an out-of-network ATM operator may add a fee, and your issuer may separately charge for using that machine. Check the ATM screen before confirming.

- Get set up quickly with no long-term commitments. Download the Square Point of Sale app for free, create an account, and start taking payments anywhere.
- Run your business all in one place with the free Square Point of Sale app. Track your sales, manage inventory, accept tips, send receipts digitally, and more.
- Works with Apple devices with a Lightning connector.
Limits depend on the card, account, issuer and ATM. Chase says its cardless ATM withdrawal limits match its physical-card limits, but that policy should not be assumed for other banks. The machine may also impose transaction or denomination limits. A credit-card cash advance can carry fees and interest unlike a debit withdrawal. If a declined attempt appears to have reduced your available balance, contact your card issuer.
Why a withdrawal may fail
A contactless reader may be intended only for purchases, or the ATM may not support withdrawals with your card. The machine, payment network and issuer all have to permit the transaction. If it fails:

- Confirm you selected the bank debit card in Wallet—not Apple Cash or Apple Card.
- Authenticate before tapping if prompted, then hold the top of the iPhone directly over the reader for several seconds. With a Watch, hold its display close to the reader.
- If detection fails, remove a thick case or magnetic accessory and try again.
- Check that the ATM supports your bank and card network, and that your card is unlocked, valid and enabled for withdrawals.
- Verify your PIN and available balance. If you are unsure of the PIN, do not keep guessing; contact your bank.
- Use the issuer’s app or ATM locator to find a cardless-enabled location, or try the physical debit card if you have it.
If the account was debited but the ATM did not dispense cash, contact your card issuer promptly and report the issue to the ATM operator as well. Keep the receipt, or note the ATM’s location, time and amount. Ask your issuer how to dispute the transaction and monitor your account for the resolution.

When Apple Pay cannot replace your physical card
Wallet can stand in for the physical debit card only when the ATM, issuer and card all support the transaction, your device works, and you know the PIN. It will not help at a machine without compatible cardless access. It is also not a reliable solution if your phone is dead or lost, you cannot authenticate, your card is ineligible, or you have only an Apple Cash balance.

Other options include using the physical debit card, using your bank’s separate app-based cardless ATM feature if available, or visiting a branch with acceptable identification. Some retailers offer cash back on eligible debit purchases, but availability depends on the retailer, terminal and payment method; do not assume Apple Pay cash back is available. You can transfer Apple Cash to a linked bank account or eligible debit card before withdrawing. Sending money to someone you trust or using a money-transfer or check-cashing service may also be possible, but check fees, limits and fraud risks first.
Use cardless ATMs safely
- Keep your PIN private and shield the keypad as you enter it.
- Use your bank’s official ATM locator when possible, and look for signs of tampering before tapping or entering a PIN.
- Keep your device locked and use its authentication controls.
- If your iPhone or Watch is lost, use Find My and contact your bank to suspend or remove cards from the device.
ATM features, Wallet interfaces and card eligibility can change. Confirm current instructions with your issuer before relying on a phone or watch as your only access to cash.
