New 2026 MacBook Neo, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro configurations sold in the UK and EU do not include a wall power adapter in the standard box. A charging cable may still be included, but if you do not already own a compatible USB-C Power Delivery (USB-PD) adapter, you will need to buy one separately. You do not have to buy Apple’s: a suitable third-party adapter can work, provided it meets the Mac’s power needs.
The EU rule is part of the reason for the change, but it does not ban bundled chargers. It requires an option to buy covered devices without one. Apple has also adopted the no-adapter packaging in its UK listings, although the UK is outside the EU.
Which new MacBooks are affected?
The current 2026 UK and EU configurations of the MacBook Neo, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro are being sold without a wall adapter in the standard box. Apple’s UK MacBook Air specifications explicitly say the “Power adapter [is] sold separately” (Apple UK MacBook Air specifications). Reporting on the 2026 launches says the same packaging approach applies to the new Neo and Pro models in those markets (MacRumors’ report on UK and EU box contents).

What is missing—and what may still be in the box?
The omitted item is the power adapter: the wall plug or charging brick. That is not the same thing as the charging cable. The cable may be included, and the exact type depends on the Mac model. MacBook Air and Pro models that support MagSafe 3 can charge through a USB-C-to-MagSafe 3 cable, as well as through USB-C; MacBook Neo uses USB-C charging and does not use MagSafe 3, according to launch coverage.
- Power adapter: Connects to the mains and supplies power.
- Charging cable: Connects the adapter to the Mac. A USB-C cable or USB-C-to-MagSafe 3 cable may be supplied.
- Complete setup: You need both a suitable power source and a cable compatible with the charging method you choose.
Apple explains the supported charging methods for Mac laptops in its Mac charging guidance. Do not assume a cable in the box includes the wall adapter, or that a USB-C-shaped cable supports every charging speed.
What the EU rule actually requires
The EU Common Charger Directive’s laptop requirements apply from 28 April 2026. Among other things, covered laptops must support USB-C charging and provide the required charging information. The directive also requires consumers to be able to acquire covered equipment without a charging device where the seller offers it with one (Directive (EU) 2022/2380).

That is an unbundled purchase option, not a ban on including a charger. The directive does not itself require Apple to remove every adapter, charge extra for one or reduce a laptop’s price by the value of an adapter. Those packaging and pricing choices are Apple’s. Its UK listings follow the same no-adapter approach, but the EU directive is not a UK law: the UK is outside the EU.
The practical takeaway is that the EU rule explains the timing and legal context for EU-market products; it should not be described as forcing Apple to omit a charger in the UK.
Will you have to pay extra?
Only if you need to buy a power adapter. If you already own a compatible USB-C PD adapter, or can charge at your desk from a sufficiently powerful USB-C or Thunderbolt display, you may not need another one. If you are a first-time Mac buyer without a suitable power source, add the cost of an adapter to your laptop budget.

Do not assume Apple has reduced the laptop’s price by the cost of the missing adapter. The effective cost depends on the laptop configuration, country, adapter you choose and any retailer bundle. Check the live regional prices for both the Mac and adapter before comparing deals; Apple’s UK store lists its 70W USB-C Power Adapter, but the right choice varies by Mac.

Often, yes. Apple says compatible USB-C Mac laptops can charge from a USB-C adapter or display that supports USB Power Delivery, subject to the power recommended for the particular Mac (Apple’s guidance on power adapters for Mac). The brand matters less than the adapter’s output, USB-PD support and quality.

- USB-C output and explicit USB Power Delivery support. A USB-C socket alone does not guarantee USB-PD.
- Wattage available from the port you will use. A charger’s advertised total may be shared across ports.
- Cable rating. The cable must be suitable for the power you expect; not every USB-C cable supports maximum laptop charging rates.
- Regional compatibility and safety. Use reputable equipment that meets applicable safety standards and has a suitable UK or EU plug.
A modest phone adapter may charge a Mac slowly, especially when the laptop is asleep or under light use. Under a heavy workload, the battery may charge very slowly or even lose charge. macOS may identify an inadequate power source as a “Slow Charger.” If you connect another device to a multi-port adapter, check whether that reduces the wattage available to the Mac.

There is no single wattage that suits every MacBook. Requirements differ by model and configuration, particularly across the Neo, Air and Pro ranges. Use Apple’s current model-specific adapter guidance for the exact Mac you are buying, rather than relying on a generic “65W is enough” rule.
As a practical rule, a lower-wattage adapter may charge slowly or struggle to keep up while the Mac is under load. A higher-wattage USB-PD adapter from a reputable maker is generally acceptable; the Mac draws the power it can use. That does not mean the biggest adapter is automatically the best buy: a 140W unit is unnecessary for many Air users, while a small phone charger is a poor primary supply for a demanding MacBook Pro.

Fast charging is a separate consideration from basic charging. Apple says compatible MacBook Air models introduced in 2022 or later, and 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models introduced in 2021 or later, can charge to around 50% in about 30 minutes with the right adapter and cable combination. The specified combinations vary by model and can include 67W, 70W, 96W or 140W adapters. Check Apple’s current fast-charge compatibility information for your configuration. Both the adapter and cable matter.
A powered USB-C or Thunderbolt display can also supply charge to a compatible Mac, if it provides enough power. That can be convenient at a desk, but it is not a replacement for a portable adapter when travelling, and a low-power display may not deliver the Mac’s maximum charging speed (Apple’s charging guidance).
Apple adapter or third-party charger?
Buying Apple’s adapter is not compulsory. It offers a straightforward compatibility path and a regional plug configuration, but an appropriate third-party USB-C PD charger may be cheaper, more compact or provide several ports. A multi-port model can be useful for a laptop, phone and tablet, but read the per-port output: the laptop may receive less power when other ports are occupied.
Whichever option you choose, avoid unbranded adapters with unclear safety information, vague wattage claims or no stated USB-PD support. Verify the sustained output from the specific port, the cable’s power rating and any power-sharing limits. A low price or a high combined wattage on the package is not enough to show that the charger is suitable for your Mac.

- Look up the adapter wattage Apple recommends for that configuration and whether you care about fast charging.
- If reusing a charger, verify USB-C Power Delivery, the wattage available on the relevant port and the cable rating.
- For a multi-port charger, check whether connecting other devices reduces laptop output.
- Compare the laptop-only price plus the cost of a suitable adapter, rather than assuming the missing brick was deducted from the Mac’s price.
