Brian Thompson, the 50-year-old UnitedHealthcare chief executive, was fatally shot in Midtown Manhattan on December 4, 2024. He was survived by his wife, Paulette “Pauley” Thompson, and their two sons. Relatives described him as a loving parent while asking the public to respect the family’s privacy.
Who was Brian Thompson?
Thompson joined UnitedHealth Group in 2004 and became UnitedHealthcare’s CEO in April 2021, according to the company biography cited in contemporaneous reporting. He was 50 when he was killed.

Thompson was shot outside the Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan on the morning of December 4, 2024. A federal criminal complaint alleges that, at approximately 6:45 a.m., Luigi Nicholas Mangione positioned himself between cars on West 54th Street and fired a 9mm pistol, killing Thompson.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office later announced that Mangione had been indicted in connection with the shooting. An indictment and a criminal complaint contain prosecutors’ allegations; they are not a finding of guilt. Mangione should therefore be described as accused unless a later authoritative court outcome establishes otherwise.

Paulette Thompson told NBC News that Brian had received threats before his death but said she did not know their details. She mentioned a possible “lack of coverage.” That comment is her account, not an established explanation for the killing, and authorities’ allegations about the criminal case should be kept separate from the family’s remarks.
