Box’s June 27, 2024 announcement removed end-user query caps for eligible Enterprise Plus customers using Box AI in Documents, Notes and Hubs. It did not make every kind of Box AI usage unlimited. Box described GPT-4o support as a planned integration for Box AI in Hubs, expected later in 2024—not as an immediately available feature across Box. Current plan entitlements, technical limits and API charges still matter.
What Box announced
On June 27, 2024, Box announced three related changes: unlimited end-user questions for Enterprise Plus customers in selected Box AI experiences; a planned GPT-4o integration for Box AI in Hubs; and additional AI capabilities, including image and spreadsheet queries and a Box AI for Metadata API. Box attributed the query-cap change to improvements in its AI platform, architecture and underlying costs. That is Box’s explanation, not independently verified cost data.
The announcement’s scope matters. It concerned questions asked by people through particular Box product experiences—not every request sent to a Box AI API, every automated extraction job or every technical limit on content and prompts. Box’s announcement described Hubs as being in beta at the time.

The 2024 announcement applied to Enterprise Plus and named Box AI for Documents, Notes and Hubs. It did not announce a universal entitlement for every Box plan or every kind of cross-document question. Box’s current plan documentation describes some Box AI access in Business plans as well, while listing broader multi-document and Hub capabilities for Enterprise Plus and above. Entitlements can depend on the plan, feature and tenant rollout, so check the current plan matrix and your organization’s account rather than relying only on the 2024 announcement.

A Hub is a Box content experience where users can ask questions about content collected in that Hub. Box’s current support material says the Hub’s content supplies the query context; users cannot add outside sources to that Hub query. That makes Hubs a specific Box-content search experience, not a claim that GPT-4o replaced Box’s entire AI stack.
To check access, administrators should confirm the plan and Box AI entitlements, then review the organization’s AI settings in the Admin Console and whether Hubs or beta features have been enabled. Box says administrators can enable or disable Box AI through account settings, but exact controls and labels may vary by tenant and interface rollout.
Was GPT-4o available immediately?
No—not on the basis of the original announcement. Box said GPT-4o was expected later that year and tied the planned integration specifically to Box AI for Hubs. Box said it expected the model to bring higher-quality answers, support for more than 20 additional languages, multimodal understanding and improved handling of task-specific requests. These were announced product benefits, not independently measured results or a verified current language list.

A later Box AI API update includes an image-query example identifying an Azure-hosted OpenAI model as azure__openai__gpt_4o. That is evidence of GPT-4o being used in at least one part of the Box AI API platform. It does not establish that the originally announced Hubs integration shipped as described or is available to every customer. Buyers should confirm GPT-4o availability for the particular product surface and tenant they intend to use.
What “unlimited” does—and does not—mean
Unlimited refers to the number of end-user questions under the applicable entitlement. It is not a promise of unlimited model capacity, response speed, context, file size, Hub size, API activity or output quality. Box’s current Box AI support documentation lists limits including:
- 1,000 characters per query.
- 2 MB of text content per file.
- Hub size limits: up to 40,000 files per Hub and 10 million files across all Hubs in an organization.
These are distinct from a cap on how many questions a user may ask. A user can have an unlimited query entitlement and still be unable to get a useful answer if the prompt is too long, the relevant file exceeds a limit, the content is outside the selected context or the requested information is not in Box.

Box AI works from the content available in the chosen context. Answers can be incomplete when important files are outside a selected set or Hub, when documents are scanned or poorly OCR’d, or when the question requires outside information. Review citations and source passages rather than treating a generated answer as authoritative.
Interactive questions and APIs are separate cost questions
For developers and workflow teams, AI Units are the important distinction. Box’s current plan documentation says Business and Business Plus customers must purchase AI Units for Box AI APIs; Enterprise, Enterprise Plus and Enterprise Advanced plans include specified allocations, with additional usage potentially requiring purchase. The documented allocations are 1,000 units for Enterprise, 2,000 for Enterprise Plus and 20,000 for Enterprise Advanced. Confirm current allocations and the definition of chargeable activity with Box, since account terms and product documentation can change.
The Metadata API is aimed at developers and workflow builders rather than ordinary end users. Box introduced it as a way to extract information from unstructured documents at scale, use the resulting metadata in automation, and potentially populate systems such as Salesforce. At announcement, Box described the Metadata API as a beta for Enterprise Plus customers, with pricing to be announced closer to general availability. Its use should be evaluated separately from a person asking a question in a document preview.

What Box AI plans may cost
Box’s pricing page displays online price signals, but these are not guaranteed enterprise quotes. The listed amounts below reflect the page information supplied for this article and can change; contract terms, billing choices, minimum seats and negotiated pricing may affect an organization’s actual cost.

How to assess it before a wider rollout
- Map the work to the right surface. Distinguish single-file questions from multi-document searches, Notes, Hub queries and API-driven extraction. They may have different entitlements and usage accounting.
- Confirm eligibility in your tenant. Check your plan, enabled features, Hubs access and current availability of any beta or model-specific capability.
- Pilot representative content. Test the file types, document lengths, languages and real questions employees will use. Include scanned and poorly structured documents if they are common in your repository.
- Set governance before broad access. Decide which sensitive or regulated material may be processed, who can use AI, how access permissions and audit controls apply, and where human review is required. Do not assume a plan label alone resolves privacy or compliance obligations.
- Teach verification. Ask users to inspect citations and source text, especially for financial, legal, clinical, employee or operational decisions.
- Model interactive and automated usage separately. Removing a per-user question cap may help adoption, but API calls and metadata extraction should be budgeted using applicable AI Units and contract terms.
For users, Box’s support page describes opening the Box AI icon from a file preview, selecting files or other content for multi-document questions, and entering a question in a Hub’s search bar. Notes may present AI in a sidebar, modal or inline. Interface details can vary, so follow the controls shown in your account.

Who is most likely to benefit?
The change is most relevant to organizations that already keep substantial working content in Box and want employees to ask frequent, small questions without tracking a per-user question allowance. Box-grounded answers can be useful where relevant material is already permissioned and organized in the repository. Developers can evaluate the separate API and Metadata API capabilities for extraction and workflow automation.
It may be a weaker fit for teams with little content in Box, buyers seeking a general-purpose chatbot, or organizations that need predictable automated API costs but cannot accept usage accounting or annual commitments. Alternatives such as Microsoft 365 Copilot, Google Workspace with Gemini, OpenAI’s business offerings and Dropbox Dash may suit different content and collaboration ecosystems; they are not direct equivalents to Box’s content-management entitlements.
For procurement, ask Box whether unlimited access applies to your precise plan and tenant, which surfaces and file types are covered, whether GPT-4o is available in the surface you plan to deploy, which operations consume AI Units, what overage or commitment terms apply, and what controls exist for permissions, citations and administration.

Bottom line
Box’s announcement lowered the adoption barrier for eligible Enterprise Plus users by removing end-user query caps in specified Box AI experiences. It did not abolish technical limits or make API workflows unlimited. GPT-4o was announced as a future Hubs integration, while later API evidence shows GPT-4o in at least one Box AI API example—not proof of universal Hubs availability. Check current tenant entitlements and costs before making a buying or rollout decision.
