AXS, MANA, SAND, ENJ, and GALA can support blockchain-game and virtual-world economies, but none creates virtual reality by itself. A token may pay for an in-game action, support governance, or help an ecosystem issue and trade digital assets. The headset, graphics, tracking, servers, and gameplay are separate. And while NFTs can sometimes be sold or used in a game, that is not a promise of income.
This is best read as a critical update to a 2022-era list—not a ranking of the best tokens to buy or proof that all five projects offer headset-based VR.
First, what “blockchain Pokémon” means
“Blockchain Pokémon” is a comparison to creature-collecting games, not an official Pokémon blockchain product. Axie Infinity, for example, features collectible creatures called Axies and has been described as Pokémon-inspired. Players can collect and use digital creatures in gameplay; some game assets are represented by NFTs. The comparison does not imply a connection to Pokémon or its rights holders. Nasdaq’s 2022 coverage describes the inspiration, while Ethereum.org’s gaming overview explains how tokens and NFTs can be used in games.

It does not automatically give the holder copyright, control over game rules, access if a developer shuts down its servers, or the right to use the asset in unrelated games. Portability only exists when other games and their technical systems choose to support an asset.

Tokens, NFTs, blockchain, and VR are different layers
- Fungible token: Interchangeable units of a cryptocurrency, such as AXS, MANA, SAND, ENJ, or GALA. A project may use them for payments, governance, staking, or rewards.
- NFT: A distinct token that can represent an item such as a creature, parcel of virtual land, wearable, or weapon. It is separate from the project’s fungible currency.
- Blockchain: A system for recording transactions, ownership, and selected data. It does not run every part of a game.
- VR: A headset-based interface involving displays, tracking, and interaction. A 3D virtual world can be used on a regular screen and still be called a “metaverse.”
In practice, a VR experience relies on a headset and tracking, plus a game engine and servers for graphics, physics, and real-time play. Blockchain may record asset ownership or transactions; tokens may facilitate a virtual economy. Neither replaces the technical work needed to make a playable VR world.
The source article named in the headline was published on May 1, 2022. Its currently visible page does not expose the full article body, so its exact original ranking and claims cannot be confirmed. The five-token set below is a period-era reconstruction, not an objective or current “top five.” The original page establishes the title and date; contemporaneous coverage grouped AXS, MANA, SAND, ENJ, and GALA among metaverse-related assets. That grouping is historical context, not an investment ranking.
What the five tokens do—and what they do not prove
| Token | Associated ecosystem | Role to understand | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| AXS | Axie Infinity | Game ecosystem token associated with governance, staking, and certain game or marketplace activity | Not an Axie NFT, not a VR token, and not the only asset historically used in the game economy |
| MANA | Decentraland | Fungible currency associated with a virtual-world economy | Buying MANA does not mean owning Decentraland, LAND, or a claim on platform revenue |
| SAND | The Sandbox | Token associated with payments, LAND-related activity, staking, and governance | LAND and user-created items are separate assets; their demand can change |
| ENJ | Enjin | Infrastructure-oriented token associated with blockchain gaming and digital assets | Not a universal metaverse currency; current asset mechanics depend on the relevant Enjin products and network |
| GALA | Gala Games | Token associated with a multi-game entertainment ecosystem | Utility may differ by title; GALA does not make every game VR-enabled or require every game to use it |
AXS: a game-linked ecosystem token
AXS is associated with Axie Infinity, whose collectible creatures are often compared with Pokémon-style collecting and battling. Historical descriptions identify AXS uses including staking, governance, and certain marketplace or breeding-related activity. Axies themselves are separate digital assets; AXS is not the creature. Axie’s economy has changed over time, and the game has also used separate reward assets such as Smooth Love Potion. Do not assume any particular breeding payment, reward, marketplace rule, or staking arrangement remains active without checking current official documentation. Start with Axie Infinity’s official site for current product information.

What it illustrates: A token can be tied closely to a game ecosystem without being a VR-enabling technology. The value of any game-linked asset also depends on continued play, the rules developers set, and whether buyers and sellers remain active.
MANA: currency associated with a virtual world
MANA is the fungible currency associated with Decentraland. The ecosystem also has distinct assets such as LAND parcels and wearables. A virtual-world currency and a land NFT are not interchangeable: holding MANA does not itself grant ownership of LAND or control of the platform. Decentraland is a virtual-world project, but the word “metaverse” alone does not establish that a particular experience requires a VR headset. Check the current experience and supported hardware rather than inferring VR support from the project label. Decentraland’s official site is the appropriate place to check its current offerings.
SAND: a creator and virtual-land economy
SAND is the fungible token associated with The Sandbox. Historical descriptions identify uses around payments for games and assets, LAND-related activity, staking, and governance. LAND and creator-made items are separate digital assets; the token is not itself a parcel or a user-created NFT. Nasdaq’s 2022 account describes a model in which users can create content and monetize some assets as NFTs, but that describes an economic mechanism—not a guarantee that an asset will sell or retain value. Check The Sandbox’s official site for current products and marketplace terms.

- Secure element (EAL6+ certified) and passphrase protection for bullet-proof physical security
- Two-button pad device interface, designed for user-friendly operation
- Bright OLED display for easy & secure hands-on verification
- PIN & passphrase enabled for on-device protection
- Fully open-source design for transparent security
What it illustrates: A creator economy can give a token a practical role, but potential demand still depends on people using the platform and wanting its assets.
Recommended Free Tools
ENJ: gaming and NFT infrastructure
ENJ is associated with Enjin’s blockchain gaming and NFT infrastructure rather than one flagship game in the way AXS is associated with Axie Infinity. That makes it an example of an infrastructure-oriented approach: tools and systems for game assets, instead of a single virtual world’s currency. The precise relationship among ENJ, particular assets, wallets, marketplaces, and Enjin’s network can depend on current product architecture. Older descriptions of how ENJ backs, supports, or is embedded in NFTs should not be assumed to apply unchanged today. Check Enjin’s current documentation; do not treat ENJ as a universal payment token accepted throughout games or the metaverse.
GALA: a token across a multi-game ecosystem
GALA is associated with Gala’s collection of games and entertainment products. A shared ecosystem token is not necessarily required by every title, and the function of a token or NFT can vary from one game to another. Past launches, planned features, game-specific rewards, and older descriptions of nodes or governance do not establish what is currently available. Verify a specific game’s current rules, supported chain, and payment options on Gala Games’ official site before acquiring an asset.

Can players make money from these ecosystems?
Sometimes users can sell an NFT, receive a game reward, create an item, or participate in a staking program. Those possibilities are not the same as dependable earnings. A sale requires a buyer willing to pay; a reward can lose value; and staking terms, lockups, eligibility, and risks can change. A token’s in-game utility does not establish a floor price, sustainable yield, right to profits, or claim on a company’s assets.
Ask where the money or token value comes from. It may come from players buying useful items, marketplace activity, game spending, or event-related demand. It may instead rely substantially on new token issuance, promotional subsidies, or new buyers paying more for assets. If rewards depend mainly on a continual flow of new entrants, the model can weaken when growth slows. “Play-to-earn” describes a pitch or mechanism, not proof that most players will earn more than they spend.
There are also practical costs and risks: network and marketplace fees, price volatility, failed transactions, limited liquidity, withdrawal restrictions, bridge exposure, and taxes or reporting obligations. Tax treatment depends on jurisdiction and transaction type; seek qualified local advice rather than assuming game rewards or NFT sales are tax-free.

Risks that remain even when an NFT is in your wallet
- Game dependence: A wallet-held NFT may be difficult or impossible to use if servers close, the client changes, or the developer stops supporting it.
- Metadata and contract dependence: The image or item details may rely on off-chain systems, and a smart contract may be upgradeable or otherwise governed by project decisions.
- Liquidity: A listed price is not a sale. There may be few buyers, high fees, or no practical way to withdraw or transfer an asset.
- Wallet and phishing risk: Fake contract addresses, deceptive websites, malicious approvals, and compromised seed phrases can lead to irreversible loss.
- Bridge and custody risk: Bridges can fail or be exploited; exchanges hold assets on users’ behalf and bring separate counterparty risks.
- Rules and availability: Developers may change rewards, marketplace terms, supported chains, or access by region. Verify current terms before committing funds.
Blockchain transferability is not the same as universal portability. An NFT may be transferable under its contract yet unsupported by other games, marketplaces, or clients. Ethereum.org’s overview explains how NFTs and tokens can function in games; it does not promise that a particular asset will work across unrelated products.
How to assess a blockchain-game token before buying or using it
- Find the official source. Navigate from the project’s official website to its documentation and marketplace. Independently verify contract addresses; do not trust search ads, direct messages, or a token name alone.
- Identify the exact asset and chain. Confirm whether you are dealing with a fungible token or NFT, which network it is on, and whether the wallet and marketplace you plan to use support it.
- Test whether the token is necessary. Is it required for a core game action, or merely optional? Can you play or use the product without buying it?
- Check current utility, not old claims. Read current rules for gameplay, rewards, staking, governance, and withdrawals. Treat a 2022 description or roadmap as historical until confirmed.
- Look for real use and a source of demand. Ask who buys the token or assets and why. Distinguish active gameplay and creator use from rewards funded by issuance or expectations of resale.
- Assess liquidity and costs. Review actual completed trading where available, spreads, marketplace fees, network costs, withdrawal limits, and bridge dependencies. A quoted floor price is not guaranteed cash value.
- Understand custody and recovery. Decide whether you are using a self-custody wallet or a custodian, protect recovery credentials, and understand that mistaken or malicious blockchain transactions may not be reversible.
- Consider downside and local rules. Be prepared for loss of the full amount spent. Check local tax and legal obligations, and do not treat staking or game rewards as guaranteed income.
For Axie, Decentraland, The Sandbox, Enjin, or Gala, begin with the project’s official information—Axie, Decentraland, The Sandbox, Enjin, and Gala Games—then verify the specific game, token, contract, and marketplace rather than assuming ecosystem-wide support.
The practical distinction
AXS is best understood as a game-linked ecosystem token; MANA as a virtual-world currency; SAND as a creator and virtual-land economy token; ENJ as infrastructure-oriented; and GALA as a multi-game ecosystem token. These labels describe broad roles, not guaranteed current functions in every product. The title’s “enabling VR” language is too broad if read literally: blockchain tokens can support digital economies, but they do not supply the headset experience, guarantee a playable VR product, or turn an NFT into reliable income.
