The price calculation is correct: $1,499 minus $1,234 equals $265. The advertised figure would generally be before sales tax and could exclude AppleCare+, accessories, or delivery charges. Retailer stock, colors, seller information, return terms, and membership requirements could also have varied.
AppleInsider reported the original offer as a Black Friday deal from Amazon and Best Buy. Because retailer listings and affiliate links can change, that report should not be treated as proof of present-day inventory.
Which MacBook Air did the deal cover?
The headline is easy to misread. It did not refer to every 2024 MacBook Air with an M3 chip or every model with 512GB storage. It referred specifically to the larger 15-inch MacBook Air with 16GB of unified memory and a 512GB SSD.

That distinction matters because Apple also sold a 13-inch M3 MacBook Air, and listings could pair the M3 chip with different memory and storage combinations. “M3 512GB” alone does not confirm the screen size or RAM.
Apple’s official specifications identify the 15-inch M3 Air as a 2024 model with a 15.3-inch Liquid Retina display, an 8-core CPU, up to a 10-core GPU, and support for 512GB storage configurations. Finish options included Midnight, Starlight, Silver, and Space Gray, subject to retailer stock.

Apple rated this model for up to 18 hours of Apple TV app movie playback and up to 15 hours of wireless web use. Those are controlled-test “up to” figures, not guaranteed everyday battery results; brightness, applications, wireless activity, and workload all affect runtime.

Why the configuration was attractive
The appeal was the combination rather than any single specification. The 15.3-inch screen offered more workspace than the 13-inch Air, while 16GB of memory was better suited to browser-heavy multitasking, office applications, coding environments, and moderate creative work than an 8GB configuration.
The 512GB SSD also provided more practical room for applications, documents, photos, and local project files than the 256GB base storage option. Since memory and storage are not user-upgradeable after purchase, getting the configuration right at checkout was important.
The M3 Air also delivered Apple’s lightweight, fanless design and hardware features such as accelerated ray tracing and AV1 decoding. Those capabilities made it a flexible general-purpose laptop, but they do not make it a substitute for every MacBook Pro or workstation-class computer.

Who would have benefited from the deal?
At $1,234, the laptop was a particularly sensible fit for buyers who valued screen size and wanted more than the base configuration without moving to a MacBook Pro.
- Students: The larger display is useful for split-screen reading, writing, research, and video calls.
- Office and remote workers: 16GB of memory supports multiple browser tabs, documents, meetings, and productivity apps.

Who should have chosen something else?

Apple documents the M3 model’s external-display behavior in its technical specifications. The second external display requires the MacBook Air’s built-in display to be turned off by closing the lid.

What to check in an archived or replacement listing
Retail product pages can change silently. A link that once showed the deal may redirect to a newer MacBook Air, a different color, an open-box unit, or a generic search page. Before paying, check every key field:
- Screen size: Confirm it says 15-inch or 15.3-inch, not 13-inch.
- Chip: Verify the processor is M3 if that is the model being compared.

Should you buy an M3 Air now?
Do not use the old $1,234 price as the only reason to buy. The right comparison is the current price of a matching M3 unit against a current-generation 15-inch Air, an Apple Certified Refurbished model, and—if portability matters—a 13-inch Air.

Apple’s 2025 M4 MacBook Air introduced a 10-core CPU, 16GB starting memory, Apple Intelligence support, and a lower U.S. launch price for the 15-inch model than the original M3 launch price. That does not automatically make every M3 unit a bad purchase, but it raises the bar for an older model. The M3 is more defensible when it is meaningfully cheaper, has the desired 16GB/512GB configuration, and comes with reliable warranty and return protection.

For readers considering refurbished hardware, Apple’s Certified Refurbished Mac store is one option. Apple says its certified refurbished products include a one-year limited warranty, a 14-day return policy, and AppleCare eligibility, although available models and prices change. Independent refurbished sellers may cost less, but compare battery disclosures, cosmetic grading, seller reputation, included accessories, warranty length, and returns.
The current MacBook Air buying page is the appropriate starting point for a new model. Amazon and Best Buy can also be useful, but shoppers should use a precisely matched listing rather than relying on a generic “MacBook Air” search result.
