Binance’s warning concerned a September 2024 surge in clipper malware—not evidence that Binance itself or a blockchain had been hacked. The malware runs on a user’s phone or computer, watches the clipboard for cryptocurrency addresses, and silently replaces the intended destination with one controlled by an attacker. The threat remains relevant: Binance Academy’s guidance, updated June 26, 2026, continues to warn that confirmed blockchain transfers are generally irreversible.

Before sending cryptocurrency, compare the entire recipient address and the correct network with a trusted source. Checking only the first and last few characters is not enough.

What Binance warned about

Binance identified a notable spike in clipper-malware activity on August 27, 2024, then issued the advisory reported on September 13, 2024. Security outlets reported the warning on September 16–18. Binance described the problem as global, said it was identifying and blocklisting suspicious addresses, and said it had notified affected users where possible.

The available reporting attributed significant losses to the activity but did not establish a verified victim count or total dollar loss. The warning also did not establish that Binance’s exchange infrastructure had been breached. In this type of attack, the user’s device, browser, extension, application, or installer is the likely point of compromise.

Although the headline refers to a 2024 advisory, the underlying risk is current. Binance Academy’s current mobile-security guidance still describes clipper apps that replace copied cryptocurrency addresses.

What is clipper malware?

“Clipper malware,” “clipboard hijacker,” and “ClipBanker” commonly refer to malware that monitors clipboard contents and looks for strings resembling cryptocurrency addresses. When it finds one, it substitutes an attacker-controlled address.

  1. You copy the recipient’s legitimate wallet address.
  2. The malware detects the address in the clipboard.
  3. It replaces that address with the attacker’s address.
  4. You paste the altered address into Binance, a wallet, or another transaction interface and confirm the transfer.

Microsoft has used the broader term cryware for malware with cryptocurrency-stealing capabilities, including clipboard monitoring and address replacement. This technique does not require the attacker to steal your seed phrase or defeat wallet cryptography. It exploits a familiar copy-and-paste habit at the precise moment a payment is prepared.

How a transfer is hijacked

Imagine that the intended address is A. You copy A from a trusted recipient. Malware changes the clipboard to attacker address B. When you paste, the exchange or wallet receives B and displays B as the withdrawal destination. If you approve the transfer without comparing it with the original source, the blockchain processes a valid transaction to B.

Your Binance login, two-factor authentication, and a legitimate Binance website may all be functioning normally. Those controls help protect access to the account; they do not necessarily detect an address changed locally before the exchange receives it.

Which devices and software are at risk?

The 2024 reporting emphasized Android devices, unofficial applications, browser extensions, web applications, and plugins installed outside trusted channels. Binance also advised iOS users to remain vigilant, so iPhones should not be treated as immune.

Desktop Windows and macOS systems can likewise be exposed through malicious browser extensions, pirated software, compromised installers, or other malware. The available evidence does not support a reliable infection-rate comparison between Android, iOS, Windows, and macOS. The practical rule is broader: any device or software layer that can observe or alter clipboard data deserves attention.

Mobile clipboard behavior and permissions vary by operating system, application, and version. A clean-looking device is not proof that it is safe; a clipper can remain quiet until it detects an address-like string.

The safest way to verify a crypto transfer

Address verification is the most important defense because it works regardless of which platform or malware variant is involved.

  1. Paste the address into the withdrawal or send screen.
  2. Compare the full pasted address with the trusted address supplied by the recipient, exchange, wallet, or saved record.
  3. Verify the network separately. A correct-looking address sent over the wrong blockchain network can still result in loss.
  4. Check the asset, amount, and recipient name or label.
  5. Review the address on a hardware-wallet screen when using one, and compare it rather than automatically approving it.
  6. Send a small test amount for a new recipient or a high-value transfer, then wait for the expected result before sending the balance.

Do not rely only on the first and last four characters. Binance Academy recommends verifying the full address because sophisticated variants may use matching prefixes or suffixes. Address formats differ between blockchains, and visual similarity can be deliberately engineered or arise through address-poisoning tactics.

QR codes can reduce manual typing, but they are not a complete defense. A malicious application or compromised workflow could still substitute the destination. Always verify the address that appears in the final transaction screen.

How to reduce the chance of infection

  • Download exchange apps, wallets, extensions, and plugins only from the vendor’s official website or an official app store.
  • Check the developer or publisher name, domain, reviews, permissions, and provenance before installing.
  • Remove cracked, pirated, unofficial, or “localized” substitute applications.
  • Keep the operating system, browser, wallet, exchange app, and security software updated.
  • Keep browser extensions to a minimum and remove extensions you no longer need.
  • Be suspicious of unexpected support messages, installation instructions, “verification” tools, and requests to install remote-access software.
  • Use reputable security software for detection and scanning, but do not treat any scanner as guaranteed to find every clipper variant.

For recurring transfers, an exchange or wallet address book and withdrawal-whitelist feature can reduce repeated copying. Add the address only after independently confirming it. Whitelisting does not defeat every clipper attack and can preserve a wrong address if it is configured while the device is compromised.

A hardware wallet can provide an independent screen for checking transaction details. It is useful only if you compare the address shown on the device before approving. It cannot protect against a user knowingly or accidentally confirming the wrong address.

Warning signs of a clipboard hijacker

  • The address you paste differs from the address you copied.
  • A recipient address changes repeatedly or unexpectedly.
  • An exchange or wallet shows an unfamiliar destination.
  • A recently installed app, extension, plugin, or installer has unexplained permissions.
  • Security software reports clipboard monitoring, a stealer, or a suspicious cryptocurrency application.
  • The device develops unusual battery use, CPU activity, network traffic, or browser behavior.

An altered paste is not proof of one specific cause. Malware, malicious browser code, address poisoning, and user error can produce similar symptoms. Treat any mismatch as a security incident until the device and transaction path have been checked.

What to do when the address changes

  1. Stop. Do not confirm the transaction.
  2. Clear the clipboard.
  3. Do not immediately copy the same address again from the potentially compromised device and retry.
  4. If malware is suspected, disconnect the device from the network while preserving relevant evidence.
  5. Use a separate, trusted device to change exchange passwords and review account activity. Changing a password on an infected device could expose the new password as well.
  6. Revoke suspicious browser-extension, application, or wallet permissions where relevant.
  7. Run a reputable security scan. If necessary, perform a clean reset or reinstall of the operating system and browser profile; reinstalling only a wallet app may not remove an operating-system or browser compromise.
  8. Contact Binance or the relevant wallet provider through its official support channel.
  9. Record the suspicious app or extension name, permissions, device details, timestamps, intended address, substituted address, and any transaction details.

What to do if funds have already been sent

Record the transaction hash, asset, blockchain network, destination address, time, and platform used to send it. Contact Binance, the sending exchange, or the wallet provider immediately through an official channel. Also report the destination address and transaction to appropriate blockchain-security or law-enforcement channels.

Recovery depends on the transaction’s status:

  • Pending exchange withdrawal: The platform may still be able to stop, hold, or review it.
  • Confirmed on-chain transfer: It is generally irreversible.
  • Funds sent to an address later identified by an exchange: An exchange or investigator may sometimes freeze funds that reach a controlled platform, but this is not guaranteed.

Do not pay anyone who promises guaranteed recovery in exchange for an upfront cryptocurrency fee. Victims of crypto theft are frequently targeted by secondary “recovery” scams. Binance may be able to assist an investigation or act if funds reach a platform it controls, but it cannot promise that a confirmed blockchain transfer will be reversed.

Clipper malware versus related crypto threats

Threat What it does
Clipper malware Replaces a copied or pasted wallet address with an attacker-controlled address.
Address poisoning Sends small transactions from a lookalike address so a victim later copies the wrong address from transaction history.
Phishing Tricks users into disclosing passwords, seed phrases, or approving a fraudulent action.
Wallet drainer Uses a malicious website or contract interaction to obtain a harmful approval or transfer when the victim signs.
Keylogger or infostealer Steals passwords, seed phrases, session tokens, or other sensitive information.
SIM swap Takes over a phone number to intercept calls or SMS authentication codes.

These threats can overlap. For example, a compromised device might steal credentials as well as alter addresses. A transfer can also be correctly addressed but still dangerous if the user is signing a malicious smart-contract approval rather than making a simple payment.

What Binance can and cannot do

Binance can screen activity, identify suspicious addresses, block or flag addresses within its systems, notify users where possible, and investigate funds that reach accounts it controls. Those measures may help, but exchange-side screening cannot necessarily detect every malicious destination before a withdrawal.

Binance cannot control every device, wallet, browser extension, or blockchain transaction. The strongest protection remains a combination of trusted-device hygiene and complete verification of the destination and network immediately before confirmation.
