There was no single best business security system in 2022: the right choice depended on the size of the premises, whether the business needed professional monitoring, and how much installation and contract flexibility mattered. In the 2022 comparison, SimpliSafe was positioned for very small businesses, ADT for professionally installed commercial protection, Vivint for video, Frontpoint for DIY flexibility, and Lorex for local-recording-oriented surveillance without a monthly monitoring fee.
This is a historical comparison, not a list of current prices or guaranteed product specifications. Plans and equipment change. For readers choosing a system now, the article also explains what to verify with providers and how to match a system to a business’s actual risks.

The comparison’s introduction refers to six providers, but its named comparison and review sections identify five; this article covers those five rather than guessing at a sixth.

First decide what the business needs protected
A security system is a set of separate capabilities, not one interchangeable product. An intrusion alarm can detect an opened door or movement and signal a monitoring center. Cameras record or stream video. Access control manages who can enter and when. Environmental sensors can flag smoke, heat, water, temperature, or power problems. Buying cameras alone does not provide a monitored alarm, and an alarm panel alone does not provide video storage or employee entry logs.

- Small office or home-based business: Start with exterior-door contacts, appropriate motion detection, and cameras covering entrances and valuable equipment. Consider whether remote staff need individual access rather than a shared code.
- Retail store: Map entrances, back doors, cash-handling areas, and inventory. Video may help investigate incidents, but it should complement—not replace—an alarm and a clear closing procedure.
- Restaurant or food business: Alongside intrusion protection, consider temperature or freezer alerts, water detection, and smoke or heat protection. Applicable fire and food-safety requirements depend on location and premises; confirm them with the relevant authority and insurer.
- Warehouse or workshop: Larger footprints, roll-up doors, loading bays, and low-traffic areas may need multiple alarm zones, outdoor-rated cameras, lighting, and professional site planning.
- Office with sensitive records or restricted rooms: Individual credentials and entry logs may matter more than another camera. Add access control where the business needs to know who entered a particular area.
- Multiple locations: Check whether administrators can manage sites, users, alerts, and video centrally. A residential-style hub may not scale well to many doors, users, or premises.
The 2022 review notes that a small storefront may need only entry sensors and cameras, while larger premises can require motion and glass-break detectors, intercoms, keycard readers, smoke and heat sensors, smart locks, and other equipment. Plan for the building and operating model, not just the number of devices in a starter kit.
What a business security system can include
- Intrusion detection: A control panel, siren, door and window contacts, roll-up-door sensors, motion detectors, glass-break sensors, and panic or hold-up buttons.
- Video surveillance: Indoor, outdoor, or specialty cameras; a recorder or cloud service; and features such as night vision, event alerts, analytics, or two-way audio.
- Access control: Keypads, cards, fobs, mobile credentials, or smart locks, with different permissions by person, door, or time.
- Life-safety and environmental sensors: Smoke, heat, carbon monoxide, water, temperature, and power-loss alerts, where supported and suitable for the premises.
- Connectivity and administration: App-based alerts, remote user management, internet or cellular communication, backup power, and system-health notifications.
- Monitoring: Self-monitoring, professional alarm monitoring, video verification, or staffed video monitoring. These services are not the same and should be compared separately.
DIY or professional installation?
DIY installation can reduce installation cost, speed up deployment, and make relocation easier. It is often attractive for a small, straightforward site. In the 2022 comparison, SimpliSafe and Frontpoint were the DIY-friendly choices. But self-installation transfers responsibility for sensor placement, camera views, Wi-Fi coverage, testing, and maintenance to the business. Poorly placed sensors can miss activity or trigger false alarms; weak wireless coverage can leave cameras or devices offline.
Professional installation can include a site survey, wiring and network planning, equipment placement, and help integrating cameras, alarms, or access control. ADT and Vivint were generally presented as professionally installed options in the 2022 review. This route is more suitable for larger or complex premises, but can mean installation charges, scheduling delays, financing or a contract, and less flexibility if the business moves.
Before choosing, ask who tests each sensor, who maintains it, whether the business owns the equipment, and whether the system will still operate if monitoring ends. For a complex site, get a written scope showing device locations, coverage assumptions, network requirements, and any work excluded from the quote.
Self-monitoring, alarm monitoring, and video monitoring
With self-monitoring, alerts go to the business or designated staff, who decide what to do. That may be workable for a low-risk site with reliable, on-call coverage. It is a weak fit if nobody can respond overnight or if the premises hold high-value inventory.

Professional alarm monitoring means a monitoring center receives alarm signals and follows a response procedure, often attempting to contact designated people and, where appropriate, requesting police, fire, or medical response. Dispatch depends on the event, verification steps, jurisdiction, permits, and local policy; monitoring is not a guarantee of immediate emergency response.
Video storage or camera alerts do not necessarily include human review. Video verification and staffed video monitoring are distinct services, and a camera does not automatically summon responders. Ask what event is reviewed, whether a person intervenes or merely records, what escalation follows, and whether the service is included in the quoted plan.

Provider comparison: what each 2022 option was for
SimpliSafe: a flexible starting point for a very small site
The 2022 review favored SimpliSafe for small businesses because of its preconfigured kits, self-installation, app control, optional professional monitoring, and no-long-term-contract positioning at that time. It can make sense for a small office, studio, or storefront that needs basic intrusion protection without a complex installation. The cited review also reported component availability issues, and a basic kit is not a substitute for enterprise access control or specialized multi-site administration.
Current check: SimpliSafe’s business page says its systems are designed without long-term contracts and that professional monitoring is optional. It also advertises cameras, live-agent interaction through selected cameras and plans, multi-camera livestreaming, and up to 30-day cloud storage for up to 10 cameras on qualifying plans. These capabilities depend on the equipment and plan; check the current terms and checkout price.

ADT: professional deployment for broader commercial needs
ADT was the 2022 comparison’s choice for medium and larger businesses, citing risk assessments, industry-specific solutions, professional installation and monitoring, access control, and a broader equipment range. It is a more natural candidate when the business wants a vendor to design and install a system rather than assemble a basic kit. The trade-offs are price opacity and the possibility of a long agreement; it is a poor match for owners who prioritize DIY installation or minimal commitment.
Current check: ADT’s business page describes intrusion protection, video, access control, and other commercial options. A displayed offer observed on August 18, 2026 listed a minimum $349 installation charge, monitoring starting at $54.99 per month, and a 36-month monitoring agreement, with early-cancellation fees applying. These are offer-specific figures, not universal pricing. Obtain a written, location-specific quote and confirm contract length, equipment ownership, cancellation terms, service calls, and what the quoted monitoring includes.
Vivint: a video-led professionally installed option
The 2022 reviewer identified Vivint as its video-surveillance pick, citing cameras, mobile-app control, monitoring, and proactive outdoor-camera features. That is an editorial characterization, not an independently verified camera test. The approach may suit a small business seeking professionally installed video integrated with alarms or smart locks. It is less suitable for a buyer wanting DIY installation or a hardware-only local-recording system.
Current check: Vivint’s business security page markets indoor and outdoor cameras, mobile access, 24/7 monitoring, and remote control. It emphasizes requesting information or a quote rather than publishing a universal business price. Do not treat the 2022 $39.99 monthly figure as current; ask for an itemized quote, including installation, video storage, contract, relocation, and cancellation details.
Frontpoint: the DIY alternative with more equipment choice
Frontpoint was positioned in 2022 as a self-install option with customizable packages and a wider equipment selection than a basic alarm kit. It may work for a small or medium site whose owner is comfortable planning and maintaining the setup. The historical review warned that costs can rise and its commercial offering was less comprehensive than a dedicated large-site deployment. Confirm current business availability, equipment, monitoring, and contract details directly with Frontpoint before comparing it with current offers.

Lorex: local-recording-oriented cameras, without included alarm dispatch
The 2022 comparison presented Lorex as a budget-conscious camera and recorder option with no monthly fee, making it potentially suitable where staff can review footage and manage equipment. That is not equivalent to a professionally monitored alarm. Businesses needing dependable overnight response or alarm dispatch should not treat a camera recorder as a substitute. “No monthly fee” in the historical review does not promise every cloud, storage, support, or monitoring feature is free today. Check current products, subscriptions, warranty terms, and any business services through Lorex.

In 2022, the comparison estimated hardware at roughly $1,000–$3,000 for typical systems, with larger deployments potentially reaching $10,000; installation at about $40–$500; and monitoring at around $10–$200 per month. These are historical editorial estimates, not current quotes. Costs vary with device count, site complexity, equipment ownership, and services included.
Compare a like-for-like written scope rather than a starter-kit price against a professionally installed package. Include:
- Equipment and any financing, lease, or activation charge.
- Installation, wiring, network upgrades, and service visits.
- Monthly alarm monitoring and any video-storage or analytics subscription.
- Cellular backup, batteries, replacement devices, and warranty exclusions.
- Permit, false-alarm, and local service fees.
- Contract length, early-termination cost, and relocation terms.
- Additional doors, cameras, users, sites, and administrator accounts.
- What happens to equipment, recordings, and account access if service is canceled.
A five-year comparison can expose the cost of a low introductory price. For example, a plan at $55 per month costs $3,300 in monitoring over five years before installation, equipment, taxes, storage add-ons, or cancellation charges. This is simple arithmetic, not an ADT quote; actual charges and contract terms vary. Ask each provider to show recurring and one-time charges over your expected ownership period.
What to verify before signing or buying
- Scope and capacity: Confirm the maximum number of doors, sensors, cameras, users, and locations the proposed system supports.
- Ownership and cancellation: Ask whether devices are purchased, leased, or financed; what continues to work after monitoring ends; and whether recordings remain accessible.
- Monitoring details: Identify the signal types monitored, the contact sequence, verification process, dispatch conditions, and responsibility for keeping contacts current.
- Video performance and retention: Check resolution, low-light performance, field of view, continuous versus event recording, retention period, export tools, tamper alerts, and outage behavior.
- Connectivity: Test Wi-Fi and cellular signal at device locations. Ask what still works during internet, power, or broadband outages and whether battery or cellular backup costs extra.
- Access control: Confirm individual credentials, door- and time-based permissions, entry logs, temporary contractor access, and immediate revocation when an employee leaves. Ask whether emergency egress and fail-safe or fail-secure behavior meet local requirements.
- Privacy and cybersecurity: Require unique administrator credentials, multi-factor authentication where available, separate staff permissions, firmware updates, and a clear process for retaining and deleting footage. Tell employees about monitoring and check applicable workplace and audio-recording rules.
- Insurance and compliance: Confirm any insurer, landlord, fire-code, or industry requirement directly with the relevant party. Do not assume a product or installation automatically satisfies a regulation or earns an insurance discount.
Current buying context (checked August 18, 2026)
The provider pages remain useful for understanding broad product categories, but 2022 prices and configurations should not guide a current purchase. ADT currently advertises professionally installed commercial options; SimpliSafe presents a flexible small-business option with optional monitoring; Vivint markets professionally installed cameras and monitoring. Those descriptions are vendor claims, and plans, equipment, availability, pricing, and service terms can vary. Get a current written quote or checkout total and compare the exact services, not the headline monthly price.
For needs beyond a small single-site setup, consider category alternatives rather than assuming the five historical providers cover every commercial requirement. Alarm.com works through authorized dealers and can be relevant to dealer-supported integrations; Axis Communications is a commercial network-video option often suited to organizations with IT or integrator support; and Johnson Controls or Securitas Technology may be more appropriate for larger integrated commercial deployments. These are not direct apples-to-apples substitutes for a small DIY kit.
Installation and maintenance checklist
- Walk the site and map doors, windows, loading points, high-value areas, and likely camera blind spots.
- Check internet, Wi-Fi, power, and cellular coverage where equipment will be installed.
- Set video retention to cover the likely interval between an incident and its discovery.
- Create unique credentials for staff and revoke access promptly when roles change or employment ends.
- Train employees to arm and disarm the system, respond to alerts, and use panic functions appropriately.
- Test sensors, alarm escalation, camera alerts, backups, and outage behavior after installation and after material system changes.
- Keep monitoring contacts and operating schedules current; document who handles alerts after hours.
- Schedule battery replacement, equipment inspection, and firmware and app updates.
- Review access logs and permissions periodically, and confirm that the system still meets insurer, landlord, and local requirements.
No system is foolproof. Equipment failures, missed maintenance, poor placement, outdated contact lists, weak network coverage, shared employee PINs, or untrained staff can undermine even a well-chosen deployment. Treat security as an operating process as well as a purchase.
