LibreOffice is the best free offline replacement for Microsoft Office. Choose Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides for real-time collaboration, ONLYOFFICE when you exchange Microsoft files frequently, WPS Office for a familiar interface, or Microsoft 365 for the web if browser-based Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are enough.
The right choice depends on whether you value offline access, Microsoft-format compatibility, collaboration, privacy, or broad device support more than the others.

Important: “Free” can mean free software, a free cloud service, or a limited tier alongside paid features. Those are different propositions.
1. LibreOffice: best fully free offline suite
LibreOffice is the strongest default choice for students, home users, Linux users, and anyone who wants to avoid a recurring subscription. It is free, open source, and designed to run locally rather than requiring an online account.

Where LibreOffice works well
- Writing letters, reports, essays, and resumes.
- Everyday budgets, lists, calculations, and charts.
- Basic presentations.
- Local file storage with no required vendor account.
- Windows, macOS, and Linux desktop workflows.
Limitations
LibreOffice is not a perfect drop-in replacement for Excel or PowerPoint. Complex DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX files can change when opened or saved. Page breaks, fonts, tracked changes, charts, formulas, animations, embedded objects, and specialist features deserve particular attention.
It is also not the best choice for teams that need several people editing the same document simultaneously. For new documents that will remain in LibreOffice or be exported to PDF, however, it is often the most economical option.

2. Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides: best for collaboration
Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides are the best free choice when multiple people need to work together in a browser. A Google Account provides access to the free consumer versions, with sharing permissions, comments, revision history, and simultaneous editing.

Google’s tools can directly edit Word files, so collaboration does not always require converting the original file into a Google-native format. Nevertheless, complex Microsoft documents should be checked after import and export.

- Browser access on most desktop operating systems.
- Mobile apps for common editing tasks.
- Useful for shared plans, schoolwork, meeting notes, and lightweight spreadsheets.
Trade-offs
This is a cloud-first option. Your account, browser, and online storage become part of the workflow. Google states that free accounts receive up to 15 GB of storage shared across Drive, Gmail, and Photos; see the current Google One storage information.

Google’s free consumer tools should also not be confused with paid Google Workspace business plans, which add administration, business email, storage, and organizational controls.
3. ONLYOFFICE: best for frequent DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX exchange
ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors are a strong middle ground: you get free local desktop applications for Windows, macOS, and Linux, while the product family also supports collaborative and self-hosted deployments.
ONLYOFFICE emphasizes Microsoft formats and supports DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, along with formats such as ODT, ODS, CSV, and ODP. Its product pages also describe document, spreadsheet, presentation, form, and PDF-related tools.

Why choose it
- Local offline editing without a subscription for the desktop editors.
- A modern, Office-like interface.
- Strong focus on Microsoft file formats.
- Real-time co-editing, comments, tracked changes, version restoration, and chat through connected collaboration services.
- Integration options involving services such as Nextcloud and ownCloud.
- Desktop and mobile applications, with iOS and Android support listed by the vendor.
For organizations, ONLYOFFICE Docs and related DocSpace or self-hosted options can provide more control over deployment. But self-hosting is not maintenance-free: hosting, updates, backups, monitoring, and security become your responsibility. Commercial administration and support features may also apply.

4. WPS Office Free: best for a familiar interface
WPS Office Free bundles word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, PDF tools, online products, and mobile apps. Its interface is aimed at users who want something visually familiar to Microsoft Office, and it lists support for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, and iPad.
It can be attractive if you want one application family across several devices and prefer a feature-heavy product. However, WPS is a freemium service rather than a straightforward open-source local suite.
Check before relying on it
- Which features are free on your specific platform.
- Whether cloud storage or collaboration requires an account.
- Whether advertisements, templates, AI tools, or PDF functions are restricted or monetized.
- Whether your country and operating system show the same pricing and feature boundaries.
WPS promotes broad Microsoft compatibility, but marketing claims are not a substitute for testing. Keep the original file untouched and verify important DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX documents after editing.

5. Microsoft 365 for the web: the overlooked free option
If you only need basic browser versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Microsoft’s free web apps may be the most practical answer. The free offering includes web versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, a Microsoft account, and 5 GB of OneDrive storage.
This is not the same as Microsoft 365 Personal or Family and does not provide the full Windows or Mac desktop applications. Advanced desktop features, macros, add-ins, offline depth, and specialist workflows can differ.
It is best for someone who wants maximum familiarity and Microsoft-format continuity without installing software. It is a poor fit if your priority is leaving Microsoft, avoiding cloud storage, or working entirely offline.

Zoho Workplace combines products such as Writer, Sheet, Show, WorkDrive, Mail, Calendar, Cliq, and Meeting. That makes it relevant to small organizations considering a broader business ecosystem.

But its currently highlighted “Forever Free” offer should not be described as an unrestricted free replacement for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Zoho’s pricing page describes free email hosting for one domain and up to five users, with 5 GB of mail storage per user, and notes that availability is limited to selected data centers.

Choose Zoho when business email and collaboration are part of the requirement. For a free local office suite, LibreOffice or ONLYOFFICE is a more direct answer.
What “compatible with Microsoft Office” really means
Opening a DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX file successfully proves very little. The meaningful test is:
Open → edit → save → reopen in Microsoft Office → compare the result.
Check complex styles, tables of contents, section breaks, page numbers, footnotes, tracked changes, comments, fonts, charts, formulas, named ranges, pivot tables, macros, animations, embedded objects, linked data, and page breaks.
Spreadsheet formulas may behave differently when they use specialized functions, external links, macros, or add-ins. Presentations deserve extra scrutiny because fonts, animations, media, and slide layouts can change. A missing font on another computer can also alter document pagination.
A safer file-sharing workflow
- Keep the original Microsoft file unchanged.
- Save an editable working copy in the format your chosen application handles best.
- Reopen the exported DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX in Microsoft Office when the recipient’s formatting matters.
- Inspect formulas, comments, tracked changes, page breaks, and presentation media.
- For a final document intended mainly for viewing or printing, export a PDF and retain the editable source separately.
Best choice by workflow
- Students: LibreOffice for offline work; Google Docs for group assignments.
- Small teams: Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides for simple browser collaboration; consider a paid business platform if administration and compliance matter.
- Linux users: LibreOffice for the broadest local-first option, or ONLYOFFICE for a more Microsoft-oriented interface.
- No account and no cloud: LibreOffice.
- Frequent DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX exchange: ONLYOFFICE first; Microsoft 365 for the web if staying in Microsoft’s ecosystem is acceptable.
- Chromebook users: Google’s browser tools or another browser-based editor.
- Phone and tablet users: Compare Google’s mobile apps, WPS, and ONLYOFFICE for your platform; mobile support is not equivalent to desktop feature parity.
- Privacy and local control: Start with LibreOffice or ONLYOFFICE Desktop. Local-first does not automatically mean that every optional online feature is disabled.
- Organization-wide collaboration: Evaluate Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Zoho Workplace, or a hosted/self-managed ONLYOFFICE deployment rather than relying only on a free desktop download.
When Microsoft Office is still worth paying for
Free alternatives become risky when your income or organization depends on VBA macros, Power Query, Power Pivot, advanced Excel add-ins, SharePoint or Teams integration, enterprise identity and compliance controls, exact PowerPoint rendering, or legal and regulatory templates that must round-trip perfectly.
A hybrid approach can be cheaper than moving everything: use LibreOffice or Google tools for ordinary work, while retaining Microsoft 365 access for the files and workflows that genuinely require it.
Final decision tree
- Need a local, free desktop suite? Choose LibreOffice.
- Need local editing with a stronger Microsoft-format emphasis? Choose ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors.
- Need several people editing together in a browser? Choose Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides.
- Want a familiar interface and bundled PDF or AI-related features? Consider WPS Office, after checking the free-tier limits.
- Want Microsoft’s own browser versions without paying? Use Microsoft 365 for the web.
- Need business email and a wider hosted ecosystem? Evaluate Zoho Workplace, but verify the regional plan rather than assuming its free tier includes the complete suite.
Other options worth considering
FreeOffice, Apple iWork, Apache OpenOffice, Collabora Office/Online, CryptPad, and a Nextcloud installation paired with ONLYOFFICE or Collabora can all fit particular workflows. They should be treated as specialist alternatives: current feature limits, platform support, format fidelity, hosting requirements, and free-tier rules vary.
