Best Buy did report a broad workforce restructuring in early 2024, and contemporaneous reporting identified Geek Squad field agents among the affected employees. The company recorded $169 million in fourth-quarter fiscal 2024 restructuring charges, primarily for employee termination benefits. However, Best Buy did not publish a Geek Squad-specific headcount or say that artificial intelligence directly caused the field-agent cuts. Its later AI announcement describes a parallel move toward self-service support, not a one-for-one replacement of technicians.
What happened to Geek Squad field agents?
Best Buy disclosed an enterprise-wide restructuring when it reported fourth-quarter fiscal 2024 results on February 29, 2024. The company said it was aligning field-labor resources with where customers shop, redirecting corporate resources toward its strategy, and right-sizing the business for its fiscal 2025 revenue outlook. It recorded $169 million in restructuring charges, primarily employee termination benefits.
An April 12, 2024 report from Tech Times, citing the Star Tribune, said Geek Squad field agents were among the employees affected. That field-agent detail came from contemporaneous reporting rather than a Geek Squad-specific headcount in Best Buy’s earnings release. Best Buy did not disclose how many field agents lost their jobs.
According to that reporting, affected workers were offered severance, while some could transfer, reapply, or seek other positions at Best Buy. The available public material does not establish that every employee received the same package.

How large was the job reduction?
The $169 million figure is a financial charge, not a worker count. It covered an enterprise-wide restructuring, primarily termination benefits, and cannot be converted into a reliable number of layoffs. Best Buy expected another approximately $10 million to $30 million in fiscal 2025 restructuring charges and said it could pay up to $135 million of employee termination benefits during fiscal 2025, with the remainder in fiscal 2026.
- No official source cited here gives the number of Geek Squad field agents dismissed.
- The charge does not show how many jobs were eliminated, relocated, consolidated, or filled through internal transfers.
- “Field agents” refers to Geek Squad workers who travel to customers’ homes or businesses; it does not mean every Geek Squad employee, in-store Agent, or remote-support worker.
What reason did Best Buy give?
Best Buy’s stated explanation was operational and financial rather than an announcement that AI had taken over a particular job category. The company pointed to:

- matching field labor to customer shopping behavior and locations;
- redirecting corporate resources toward its strategy;
- right-sizing resources for the fiscal 2025 revenue outlook; and
- optimizing the customer experience.
That language supports a broader labor and cost realignment. It does not identify AI as the sole cause of the field-agent changes.

Where AI fits—and where the evidence stops
On July 23, 2024, Best Buy announced a Google Cloud partnership that included a generative-AI virtual assistant for customers who prefer self-service. The company presented the assistant as part of a wider effort to provide personalized support to customers and employees. The announcement is available at Best Buy’s technology and customer-support update.
What an AI assistant can handle
- basic troubleshooting and product-support navigation;
- routine order, membership, or account questions; and
- common requests that can be completed digitally without an appointment.
What it does not do by itself
- install or mount equipment in a customer’s home;
- diagnose wiring, networking, or hardware in person;
- set up appliances or a home-theater system on site; or
- perform physical repair and configuration work.
Therefore, the strongest supported conclusion is that Best Buy was pursuing automation and field-labor changes at the same time. The public evidence does not prove that the virtual assistant replaced the dismissed agents, eliminated a particular number of jobs, or ended Geek Squad’s field-service model.
Was Geek Squad being eliminated?
No such elimination was announced in the cited material. In the July communication, Best Buy continued to describe Geek Squad agents and Blue Shirts as important customer-facing experts. It also said it was adding dedicated teams in computing, appliances, and home theater, and identified more than 30,000 team members prepared to support the Copilot+ launch.
That combination points to a hybrid model: digital self-service for routine questions, specialized store staffing, and human technicians for work that requires judgment or physical access. A reduction in some field positions can occur without removing every Geek Squad service.

What customers should expect
The 2024 workforce disclosures do not establish that Geek Squad services disappeared nationwide. Availability can differ by market, appointment capacity, product, and service category. Customers should check the current Best Buy services hub for the specific installation, repair, setup, or in-home appointment they need rather than infer availability from the 2024 restructuring.
Choosing an alternative for a specific problem
- Warranty or brand-specific diagnosis: Start with the manufacturer’s support channel, such as Microsoft Support, Apple Support, Google Pixel Help, or Samsung Support.
- Phone, tablet, or computer repair: Check model eligibility at uBreakiFix by Asurion or Asurion Tech Repair & Solutions.
- Mounting, installation, wiring, or smart-home setup: Compare local providers through Angi or Taskrabbit, checking credentials, insurance, scope, and total price.
- Recurring help across several devices: Review the current terms of My Best Buy Membership before enrolling. Its value depends on current benefits, price, and how often support is needed.
No alternative is a universal substitute. Manufacturer support is usually strongest for warranty and account issues; repair chains focus on supported devices; marketplaces vary by individual provider; and a retailer service plan may be better for multi-brand, in-home needs.

The later AI-support initiative is important context: Best Buy was adding self-service automation while reshaping where and how human expertise was deployed.
