Barclaycard Precisionpay Go was a UK business-expense platform announced on 15 December 2020—not a new 2026 launch. It let employers with a Barclaycard corporate account issue purpose-specific virtual Visa cards to employees, contractors and other approved users. Cards could be used online and, subject to the product phase and device eligibility, added to Apple Wallet for contactless payments.

The aim was to replace some “pay personally, then reclaim” transactions with employer-authorised payment at the point of purchase. The concept can reduce out-of-pocket spending and improve visibility, but it does not automatically remove approvals, receipts, accounting or policy checks.

What Barclaycard Precisionpay Go was

Barclaycard’s 2020 announcement described Precisionpay Go as a Visa-powered, app-based virtual-card service for UK businesses. An employer needed the relevant Barclaycard corporate arrangement; downloading the app alone did not create an account.

The service was intended for staff, contractors and other approved users. The App Store description says users could obtain a virtual card for business spending, pay online and add the card to Apple Wallet. The launch report described wallet-based contactless payments as part of a planned second phase for early 2021, so the timing and availability of every feature should not be assumed.

Examples of intended spending included hotel bookings, flights, office stationery and other approved business purchases. The launch coverage mentioned GBP, USD and EUR, but that does not establish support for every currency, merchant or customer configuration.

Barclaycard’s launch report said physical cards took an average of eight days to arrive and cited Barclaycard research claiming that 63% of employees filed their own expenses. Those are Barclaycard figures, not independently verified industry statistics.

The expense problem it was designed to address

A conventional expense process often works like this:

  1. An employee pays with personal money or waits for a physical corporate card.
  2. They retain receipts and submit a claim.
  3. Finance reviews the claim and reimburses the employee.
  4. The business reconciles the payment and assigns it to a project, cost centre or account.

That process can create cash-flow pressure for employees, receipt chasing for finance and a delay between the purchase and the employer seeing it. A digital card moves payment authority to the business before—or during—the purchase. It can therefore reduce personal funding, reimbursement delays and some manual claim administration.

It is not an expense-policy bypass. A company may still need a manager’s approval, a receipt, a business explanation, tax coding and a reconciliation step after the transaction.

How the employee workflow was intended to work

  1. The employer maintained a Barclaycard Precisionpay Go account.
  2. An eligible employee, contractor or approved user was invited.
  3. The user installed the app and connected to the employer’s account.
  4. A virtual card was requested or generated for an approved purpose.
  5. The user paid online or used a supported mobile wallet for an in-person transaction.
  6. The employer reviewed the transaction and matched it to the relevant expense or accounting record.

The available sources do not establish the exact approval screens, spending-limit rules, receipt workflow, operating-system requirements or wallet eligibility. Businesses should confirm those details with Barclaycard rather than rely on assumptions based on the app listing.

Potential benefits for employers

  • Earlier visibility: finance can see a payment closer to the time it occurs instead of waiting for a reimbursement claim.
  • Purpose-based control: a card can be issued for a trip, project or other defined need rather than giving every user a broad, permanent card.
  • Less employee cash exposure: staff do not have to lend the business their own money for approved purchases.
  • Faster issuance: digital credentials avoid the production and postal delay associated with plastic.
  • Potentially easier reconciliation: a transaction linked to a user or purpose may be simpler to match than a later receipt submitted without context.
  • Reduced physical administration: there may be less dependence on paper receipts and physical cards, although records and controls are still required.

These are intended advantages, not guaranteed savings. They depend on how well the employer configures approvals, coding, limits and accounting processes. Visa’s current virtual-card materials describe general capabilities such as controls by amount, time or merchant category, instant issuance and accounting integration; those general Visa features should not be treated as confirmed historical Precisionpay Go specifications (Visa business virtual cards; Visa corporate virtual-card information).

Potential benefits for employees

  • No need to use personal funds for an approved hotel, flight or office purchase.
  • Immediate digital access rather than waiting for a card in the post.
  • Online payment and, where supported, mobile-wallet contactless payment.
  • Clearer separation between personal and business spending.
  • Less dependence on reimbursement forms for the payment itself.

Employees may still have to submit a receipt, select a cost centre, explain the purchase or follow a travel policy. “Virtual” changes the payment credential; it does not remove the employer’s record-keeping obligations.

Virtual card versus physical employee card

Issue Virtual card Physical card
Issuance Digital and potentially immediate Requires production and delivery
Best fit One-off, online, travel, contractor or purpose-specific spending Recurring access and broad in-person use
Controls Can potentially be limited by purpose, value or duration Usually managed at cardholder or account level
Dependencies Compatible app or wallet, charged device and merchant support Plastic card acceptance; risk of loss or theft
Travel edge cases May require special handling for deposits and pre-authorisations Often more familiar to hotels and rental companies

Virtual cards are not a universal replacement. A physical card may be preferable for frequent travellers, offline terminals, hotel guarantees, car-rental deposits or situations where phone and wallet compatibility cannot be guaranteed.

Security and operational limits

Virtual credentials can improve control by separating a payment number from the underlying account and allowing limits, expiry dates or merchant restrictions. They can also be deactivated quickly. That can reduce exposure, but it is not fraud-proof.

Common failure points include:

  • False declines: a legitimate purchase may exceed a limit or fall outside a merchant-category rule.
  • Merchant incompatibility: some websites require a physical-card verification step, while some terminals or offline merchants do not accept a wallet credential.
  • Travel pre-authorisations: hotels and car-rental companies may place deposits or add incidental charges that exceed the initial amount.
  • Refund complications: a refund may be harder to match after a single-use or expired card. Keep the original transaction reference.
  • Device dependence: a dead battery, lost phone, app problem or wallet restriction can prevent payment.
  • Account compromise: a compromised user account or device can still be abused before access is revoked.

When an invitation does not arrive, the employer should verify the user’s email and approval status. If a card request is declined, check policy, available credit, limits, merchant category and approval state. If a wallet cannot be added, confirm device, region and whether the relevant wallet phase was actually enabled.

What can be verified about availability in 2026?

The original launch is verified as a 15 December 2020 UK announcement. The App Store listing remains evidence that an app page exists and describes the employer-controlled virtual-card model. It is not proof that Barclaycard is accepting new employer customers, that support is active, or that pricing and eligibility are unchanged.

The available evidence does not independently confirm current onboarding, supported countries, iOS or Android compatibility, the completion of the planned wallet phase, or whether Barclaycard has replaced Precisionpay Go with another expense-management product. A business considering it should verify the product name, contract terms, support channel, fees and integration options directly with Barclaycard.

Questions to ask before adopting any virtual-card system

  1. Controls: Can cards be limited by amount, date, merchant category, trip or project?
  2. Approvals: Can a manager approve a request before credentials are issued?
  3. Accounting: Do transactions flow into the company’s ERP, accounting or expense platform?
  4. Receipts: Is receipt capture integrated, and how are missing receipts handled?
  5. Acceptance: Will users pay online, in person and with a wallet in the countries where they travel?
  6. Travel: Are hotel deposits, car-rental pre-authorisations, tips and incremental charges supported?
  7. Refunds: How are refunds handled if a card expires or is single-use?
  8. Lifecycle: Can access be revoked immediately when an employee leaves or a contractor’s assignment ends?
  9. Total cost: Check platform, card, foreign-exchange, credit, late-payment and minimum-account charges.
  10. Continuity and data: Confirm support, service status, data access, retention and dispute procedures.

Alternatives

Traditional corporate cards remain practical for employees who spend frequently and need dependable in-person acceptance. Reimbursement can be cheaper for very small businesses with occasional expenses, though it shifts cash-flow and administration to employees and finance. Dedicated expense platforms may combine virtual cards, approvals, receipt capture and accounting integrations. Bank-issued virtual cards can suit companies wanting centralised credit and statements, while procurement or accounts-payable cards are generally better for suppliers, subscriptions and purchase orders than for ad hoc employee travel.

Visa’s network-level virtual-card products are not a direct substitute for Barclaycard: a business may still need an issuing bank, expense platform or integration partner. Other issuers, such as American Express, have their own eligibility and acceptance limits, so comparisons should be made on geography, employee-card support, integrations and total cost—not on the word “virtual” alone.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Precisionpay Go’s 2020 proposition was straightforward: give employees controlled digital payment credentials when they need them instead of making them pay first and reclaim later. That can improve cash flow and visibility, but its practical value depends on current availability, merchant and wallet acceptance, travel handling, accounting integration, controls and cost. Treat the app listing as a product description—not confirmation that the service is still open to new UK customers in 2026.
