AWS missed analysts’ revenue estimate for the quarter ended March 31, 2025, but it did not report falling sales or a profit problem. Revenue reached $29.27 billion, up about 17% year over year, while operating income rose to $11.55 billion. The tension was between AWS’s strong profitability and growth that had slowed just as investors were looking for cloud providers to capture more of the generative-AI boom.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy’s optimism rested on AWS’s investment in AI infrastructure, custom chips and services such as Bedrock—not on the claim that the quarter had met expectations. Subsequent results showed a sharp acceleration in AWS growth, making the Q1 miss look more like a warning about near-term momentum than proof of structural decline.
What AWS missed—and what it did not
Amazon announced its first-quarter results on May 1, 2025. AWS reported $29.267 billion in revenue for the quarter, compared with an analyst estimate of about $29.42 billion cited in contemporary coverage. That is a shortfall of roughly $150 million, or about half a percent of the estimate. AWS revenue was still up approximately 17% from a year earlier.
AWS also generated $11.547 billion in operating income, equivalent to an operating margin of about 39.5%. That was a substantial increase from $9.421 billion in Q1 2024. The revenue estimate miss, in other words, was not a sign that AWS had stopped growing or had become unprofitable. It was a disappointment against a forecast, alongside very strong segment earnings.

| Q1 2025 AWS measure | Result | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $29.267 billion | Up about 17% year over year |
| Analyst estimate cited at the time | About $29.42 billion | A shortfall of roughly $150 million |
| Operating income | $11.547 billion | Up from $9.421 billion in Q1 2024 |
| Operating margin | About 39.5% | Operating income divided by AWS revenue |
| Growth in Q4 2024 | 18.9% | Growth slowed to about 16.9% in Q1 2025 |
Amazon’s official Q1 2025 earnings release supplies the reported revenue and operating-income figures. Analyst estimates are not company guidance or official Amazon statistics; the roughly $29.42 billion comparison comes from contemporary reporting. That coverage described the quarter as AWS’s third consecutive revenue miss against analyst expectations. Treat that streak as an estimate comparison, not as a figure Amazon reported.
Amazon as a whole reported net sales of $155.667 billion, up 9%, and operating income of $18.405 billion. AWS remained a major source of profit, but its growth rate—not its ability to make money—was the part investors were scrutinizing.
Why a small miss drew attention
A miss of about $150 million is modest relative to quarterly AWS revenue. Its significance came from the context. AWS growth eased from 18.9% in Q4 2024 to about 16.9% in Q1 2025, while Microsoft and Google were reporting faster growth in their cloud businesses. Investors had also been looking for AI demand to drive faster cloud expansion.

That does not establish a single reason for the slowdown. Customers’ efforts to optimize cloud spending had weighed on comparisons in the broader industry; AI workloads were increasing demand but also required data-center capacity and specialized chips; and large customers could distribute workloads among AWS, Azure, Google Cloud and specialist providers. Contract timing, foreign exchange and comparison periods can also affect a quarter. The available results show the slowdown, but do not isolate one cause for it.
Contemporary reporting put Azure and other cloud-services growth at 33% and Google Cloud growth at 28%, versus AWS at about 17%. These figures suggest rivals were growing faster, but they are not a perfectly comparable scorecard: AWS is a separately reported segment, Google Cloud includes infrastructure, platform and applications, and Microsoft’s Azure growth measure is distinct from its broader Intelligent Cloud segment. A growth-rate comparison does not by itself show that AWS lost market leadership or share.
| Provider | Metric reported in contemporary coverage | Growth | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| AWS | AWS segment revenue | About 17% | Separately disclosed Amazon segment |
| Microsoft | Azure and other cloud services | 33% | Azure growth is not the same as Intelligent Cloud segment growth |
| Google Cloud revenue | 28% | Segment includes multiple cloud products and services |
The market concern was therefore not simply “AWS missed.” It was whether AWS could turn the surge of interest in AI into revenue quickly enough to sustain its competitive pace. A high growth rate can still disappoint when expectations are higher.

Why Jassy remained confident
Jassy’s comments in Amazon’s earnings release emphasized continued product development and customer adoption. His optimism reflected a longer-term thesis: AWS could sell not only computing capacity for AI, but also chips, model access, development tools and services that help businesses put AI applications into operation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →That strategy spans several layers:
- Infrastructure: data centers, networking and compute capacity to train and run models.
- Custom chips: Trainium accelerators for AI workloads and Graviton processors for other cloud computing tasks.
- Model access and development: Amazon Bedrock for using foundation models and building applications, and SageMaker for developing and managing machine-learning work.
- Applications and operations: tools such as Amazon Q and QuickSight that bring AI into software development, analytics and business workflows, alongside security and monitoring services.
The business case is that customers may spend across this stack rather than buying raw compute alone. AWS can also draw on its large existing customer base and the strong operating income from its cloud business to fund capacity and product investment. But a broad product offering is not proof that AI revenue already explains AWS’s results: Amazon did not disclose AI revenue as a directly comparable line item in this quarter.
Bedrock, Trainium2 and the economics of the AI bet
Bedrock offers model choice, not one Amazon model
Amazon Bedrock is a managed platform for accessing foundation models and building applications with them. Around the time of the Q1 results, Amazon highlighted models including Anthropic Claude 3.7 Sonnet, DeepSeek R1, Meta’s Llama 4 family and Mistral AI’s Pixtral Large. Availability can vary by region and product terms, so the list should be understood as the lineup Amazon highlighted at the time—not a guarantee that every model is available everywhere today.

For an AWS customer, Bedrock can reduce the work of setting up and operating model-serving infrastructure and offer options from multiple model providers. That choice may reduce reliance on any one model, but it does not eliminate platform dependence: integrations with AWS data, security, identity and application services can make workloads more tied to AWS over time.
Trainium2 could improve costs for suitable workloads
Trainium2 is Amazon’s custom AI accelerator, intended to support model training and inference. Custom silicon can help a cloud provider improve capacity or economics for workloads that fit its hardware and software. Amazon has made price-performance claims for Trainium; those are vendor claims, not a universal or independently measured result for every workload.

The trade-off is practical as well as financial. Customers may need to adapt code, tune workloads or acquire new operational expertise. Results depend on chip availability, software maturity, model compatibility and the shape of the job. NVIDIA-based systems may remain preferable where teams rely on established software, portability or existing expertise. A lower claimed cost per unit of performance matters only if the workload can use the chip effectively and the full migration and operating costs make sense.

The same caution applies to AWS’s larger investment. Building data centers and buying or developing accelerators can enable future sales, but it also requires capital and adds costs such as depreciation. If capacity arrives before demand, returns can disappoint; if demand is strong but capacity is constrained, revenue may lag customers’ needs. Strong growth can therefore coexist with pressure on cash generation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the Q1 numbers say about AWS’s financial position
The clearest Q1 signal was a split between growth and profitability. AWS’s roughly 17% revenue growth was slower than in the prior quarter and behind the rates cited for Azure and Google Cloud. Its nearly 40% operating margin, however, showed that the segment remained highly profitable. Those are different measures, and neither should be used as a substitute for the other.
- Growth: positive, but decelerating and below the market’s apparent appetite.
- Profitability: very strong, with operating income rising year over year.
- Investment capacity: substantial, although expansion of AI infrastructure requires heavy spending.
- Competitive position: AWS remained a large cloud business, while faster rival growth raised questions about momentum—not, by itself, proof of lost leadership.
What happened after the headline
The subsequent results make the Q1 2025 miss easier to interpret, though they do not change what investors knew at the time. AWS revenue was $30.873 billion in Q2 2025, up 17.5% year over year. By Q1 2026, it had reached $37.6 billion, up 28%. Amazon’s Q2 2026 release reported AWS growth of 36.7% year over year and said its AI and chips businesses each exceeded $25 billion in run-rate terms. See Amazon’s Q2 2025, Q1 2026 and Q2 2026 releases for those later results.
The acceleration supports Jassy’s argument that AI infrastructure and services could become a significant growth engine. It does not prove that every investment paid off, that the Q1 concerns were unfounded, or that competitive pressure disappeared. Later Amazon disclosures also point to heavy capital spending for AI, making cash generation and returns on infrastructure important alongside revenue growth.
For a cloud customer, the business results are not a reason on their own to choose a provider. Compare platforms against workload requirements, regional availability, software compatibility, security and governance needs, and the full cost of compute, storage, data transfer, managed services and support. The AI strategy matters commercially only when its tools and economics fit the customer’s actual use case.
