Adam Selipsky stepped down as CEO of Amazon Web Services effective June 3, 2024. Amazon announced the leadership change on May 14, naming Matt Garman—then AWS’s senior vice president for sales, marketing, and global services—as his successor. Amazon described the move as a planned leadership transition, not a publicly confirmed dismissal.
What happened at AWS?
Amazon announced that Adam Selipsky would leave the AWS CEO role on May 14, 2024. The transition became effective on June 3, 2024, when Matt Garman became CEO of AWS.
The dates matter: the succession was announced in May, but the change in leadership took place in June. Andy Jassy remained CEO of Amazon; this was a change at Amazon’s cloud-computing business, not at the parent company.
Why did Selipsky step down?
Amazon’s official announcement characterized the move as a planned succession. Selipsky said the timing was appropriate given the condition of the business and its leadership team, and that he wanted to spend more time with his family, take a respite, and consider future possibilities.

Andy Jassy thanked Selipsky and said he had helped prepare AWS’s next generation of leaders. The public announcement did not say that Selipsky was fired or forced out.
AWS was facing significant strategic pressure in 2024, including competition from Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud, tighter customer scrutiny of cloud spending, and an accelerating generative-artificial-intelligence race. Those issues help explain the importance of the transition, but Amazon did not identify AI performance, internal conflict, or missed opportunities as the official reason for Selipsky’s departure.
Who is Adam Selipsky?
Selipsky was one of the early vice presidents hired into AWS in 2005. He spent 11 years leading AWS sales, marketing, and support before leaving Amazon in 2016 to become CEO of Tableau.

He returned to Amazon in 2021 and became AWS CEO after Jassy moved from leading AWS to becoming Amazon’s corporate CEO. Selipsky therefore led AWS for roughly three years, from 2021 until June 2024.
During his tenure, AWS continued expanding its cloud infrastructure and generative-AI portfolio. Products such as Amazon Bedrock and Amazon Q became important parts of the company’s effort to provide businesses with model-hosting, application-development, and AI-assistance tools.
Jassy’s announcement said AWS had reached a $100 billion annual revenue run rate in the quarter before the succession announcement and that year-over-year growth had accelerated. For historical context, Reuters reporting cited AWS revenue of $45.4 billion in 2020 and $90.8 billion in 2023, with 2023 operating income of $24.6 billion. Those figures describe the period through 2023, not current AWS results.

Who replaced Selipsky?
Matt Garman became AWS CEO on June 3, 2024. Before the promotion, he was senior vice president of AWS Sales, Marketing, and Global Services.

That background made Garman an internal continuity candidate with both technical and commercial experience. Jassy emphasized his AWS knowledge, customer focus, product expertise, and ability to continue growing the business.

Garman should not be confused with Amazon’s corporate CEO. He is CEO of AWS, while Andy Jassy remains CEO of Amazon.
Why the succession mattered
AWS is strategically important to Amazon because it is the company’s central cloud business and a major source of operating income. Its performance affects Amazon’s overall profitability, investment capacity, and competitive position.

Garman inherited several major challenges:
- Generative AI competition: AWS had to compete with Microsoft’s close relationship with OpenAI and Google’s AI infrastructure and models while promoting its own chips, services, and model ecosystem.
- Customer cost controls: Businesses were reviewing cloud workloads and optimizing spending after the rapid expansion of cloud use during the pandemic period.
- Product integration: AWS needed to connect infrastructure, custom chips, model-hosting services, and enterprise AI tools into a clear offering for customers.
- Sales execution: Garman’s previous responsibility for sales, marketing, and global services gave him direct exposure to customer demand and competitive pressure.
These were strategic circumstances surrounding the handoff, not proof that they caused Selipsky’s departure. Contemporary reports discussed AWS’s AI position and competitive pressures, but those interpretations should not be presented as Amazon’s stated explanation.

What changed for AWS customers?
The immediate change was AWS leadership. The announcement did not disclose broad service cancellations, customer-contract changes, or a restructuring of the entire AWS business.
For customers, the longer-term question was whether Garman would change priorities involving cloud pricing, infrastructure investment, AI services, account management, or product development. His appointment suggested continuity through an experienced internal leader rather than an outside executive brought in to reset the business.
Did Selipsky leave Amazon?
The confirmed event is that Selipsky stepped down from the AWS CEO position. Amazon’s announcement said he was moving on to his next challenge, but it did not announce a new job or clearly establish that he had permanently left Amazon in June 2024.
It is therefore more accurate to say that Selipsky left the AWS CEO role than to state without qualification that he left Amazon entirely. Similarly, “retired” is not supported by the cited announcement.
Current status of the AWS CEO role
As of August 18, 2026, Amazon’s investor-relations officer listing continued to identify Matt Garman as CEO of AWS, a position he has held since June 2024.
Bottom line
Adam Selipsky did step down as AWS CEO on June 3, 2024, after Amazon announced the transition on May 14. Matt Garman succeeded him. Based on Amazon’s public explanation, the change is best understood as a planned internal handoff at a strategically important moment—not as a publicly confirmed ousting over AI or AWS performance.
