Is Audien an OTC hearing aid or just an amplifier?
The answer depends on the exact model and its labeling. The FDA distinguishes over-the-counter hearing aids from personal sound amplification products, or PSAPs. OTC hearing aids are medical devices intended for adults 18 and older with perceived mild-to-moderate hearing loss. PSAPs are not hearing aids and are not FDA-regulated as hearing aids.

Who may be a reasonable candidate?
An OTC device such as the Ion Pro 2 may be worth considering for an adult who believes they have mild-to-moderate hearing loss and wants a lower-cost, self-directed option. Typical difficulties can include:
- following conversations in groups;
- hearing speech in noisy places;
- using the telephone; or

Prescription hearing aids and audiologist care are also the stronger route for severe or profound loss, significant tinnitus or dizziness, asymmetric hearing problems, poor results with an OTC device, or anyone needing detailed programming and continuing follow-up. “Most powerful” in Audien’s marketing does not establish adequate output for severe or profound loss.
