Tom’s Hardware reported that ASUS planned only 1,000 units for the limited-edition launch, although ASUS’s main announcement does not confirm that as a worldwide lifetime production total.
The Matrix is aimed at collectors and serious overclockers—not buyers seeking ordinary gaming value. Its standout features include four fans, liquid-metal thermal compound, a copper vapor chamber, a reinforced copper PCB and support for up to 800 watts in a specific ASUS BTF dual-power configuration.

Availability checked August 18, 2026: ASUS’s U.S. listing showed the ROG Matrix RTX 5090 at $3,999.99, while the ROG availability filter indicated “temporarily out of stock.” Inventory can change quickly, so verify the live ASUS listing before purchasing.
ASUS first unveiled the card at Gamescom on August 19, 2025, then officially launched it in November 2025. It is a standalone retail graphics card, not merely a concept design, but it is positioned as a 30th Anniversary limited edition rather than a normal high-volume RTX 5090 model.

Tom’s Hardware reported that ASUS made just 1,000 units available for the limited-edition launch. That should be read as an attributed launch or production figure—not as a confirmed ASUS statement that exactly 1,000 cards exist worldwide for all time.
The $3,999.99 price is specifically the U.S. ASUS eShop price. Taxes, warranty terms, distribution and availability vary by country. Third-party marketplace listings may also include scalper premiums, incorrect descriptions or used hardware.
What makes the ROG Matrix different?
The full name is ASUS ROG Matrix Platinum GeForce RTX 5090—ASUS Graphics Cards 30th Anniversary Edition. It uses the same RTX 5090 class of NVIDIA GPU as other RTX 5090 cards, but ASUS builds the surrounding product for thermal capacity, power headroom and collectability.
- Quad-fan cooler: Four fans push air through the large heatsink to increase airflow and static pressure.
- Copper vapor chamber: The cooler is designed to spread heat across the heatsink more effectively.
- Liquid-metal GPU thermal compound: This is intended to improve heat transfer compared with conventional paste.
- Three-ounce copper PCB: The heavier copper construction supports power delivery and thermal management.
- Memory Defroster: A feature aimed primarily at extreme overclockers, including liquid-nitrogen users.
- Factory tuning: ASUS lists a 2,730MHz default boost clock and a 2,760MHz OC-mode boost clock.
Four fans do not mean four times the cooling performance. Actual temperatures and noise depend on fan size, heatsink design, fan curves, case airflow, ambient temperature and power draw. ASUS’s specifications establish what hardware is included, but they do not replace independent testing of acoustics, sustained clocks or gaming performance.
Liquid-metal application has also received attention in independent coverage. Tom’s Hardware reported that retail cards used a revised application compared with earlier examples. That does not establish that every card had a defect or that a recall occurred.
What “800 watts” actually means
The Matrix supports up to 800 watts only in the specified dual-input configuration. It is not a card that ordinarily consumes 800 watts during every gaming session.
The intended arrangement combines:
- An Advanced BTF motherboard with the appropriate concealed graphics-card high-power connection.
- A direct 12V-2×6 connection from the power supply to the card.
- A suitable high-capacity, high-quality power supply and correct cabling.
ASUS says this configuration can provide up to 800 watts and deliver up to 10% more performance potential or overclocking headroom. That is a manufacturer claim, not a guaranteed 10% improvement in every game.
BTF is therefore not necessarily mandatory for every form of card operation. ASUS lists a conventional 16-pin graphics-card power connection and a BTF adapter accessory. However, a buyer with a conventional motherboard should not assume that the complete advertised 800-watt dual-input mode is available. Do not improvise adapters or combine unsuitable modular PSU cables.
More power also means greater heat, electrical load, system complexity and potentially more noise. The full mode makes sense mainly in a deliberately engineered extreme-overclocking or showcase system.

Check the official specifications against your exact system before ordering. A nearly four-slot GPU can block neighboring expansion slots and interfere with a front radiator, drive cage, side-mounted fan or CPU cooler.
Compatibility checklist
- Measure GPU length, height and side-panel clearance—not just the case’s advertised maximum length.
- Confirm that 3.9-slot thickness will not block required expansion slots.
- Allow room for the 12V-2×6 cable and its bend radius.
- Use a reputable PSU rated at 1200W or more if following ASUS’s recommendation for a fully overclocked system.
- Confirm the PSU has appropriate native high-power GPU support.
- Verify Advanced BTF compatibility if you want the full dual-input 800-watt configuration.
- Consider front-radiator and airflow placement before choosing a case.
Is it meaningfully faster than cheaper RTX 5090 cards?
Not proportionally to its price. The Matrix’s main advantages are its cooler, power delivery, factory tuning, overclocking headroom, physical design and rarity. Those features may help it sustain higher clocks or achieve stronger overclocking results, but a higher boost specification alone does not prove a large gaming uplift.

Treat that as a platform claim rather than an expected average across all games. To establish a real advantage, independent tests would need to compare stock and overclocked performance, sustained clocks, temperatures, noise, power consumption and performance per watt against the Founders Edition and less expensive partner cards.
The price is roughly twice NVIDIA’s original $1,999 RTX 5090 Founders Edition MSRP, but that does not mean the Matrix is twice as fast. Much of the premium pays for the extreme cooler, specialized PCB and power design, anniversary accessories, low production volume and collector appeal.

Do not treat the limited quantity as an investment guarantee. Scarcity can increase collector interest, but future resale value is not assured. Also remember that a listed price does not mean the card is currently orderable: ASUS showed the model as temporarily out of stock when checked.

The ASUS ROG Matrix RTX 5090 is a technically extravagant and genuinely scarce graphics card. Its $3,999.99 U.S. price buys an extreme cooling and power platform, collector status and overclocking potential—not a proportional increase in everyday gaming performance. For a collector, showcase builder or serious overclocker with a spacious case, suitable PSU and compatible BTF plans, it is one of the most distinctive RTX 5090 options. For everyone else, a cheaper RTX 5090 is likely the more sensible purchase.
