Arm has already announced its own data-center processor. The Arm AGI CPU was unveiled on March 24, 2026, with Meta serving as its lead partner, co-developer and initial customer. Arm expects production by the end of calendar 2026.

This is a major strategic shift, but not an abandonment of Arm’s licensing business. The company is adding a finished, Arm-designed processor to its established model of licensing CPU technology to chipmakers and cloud companies.

What Arm actually launched

The Arm AGI CPU is a data-center CPU designed for artificial-intelligence and “agentic” workloads. It is not a graphics processor or a direct replacement for NVIDIA GPUs, AMD accelerators or Meta’s MTIA chips.

Its intended role is to handle the general-purpose work surrounding AI acceleration: coordinating services, moving data, accessing memory, managing networking and storage, and running inference or orchestration tasks. Accelerators can perform specialized AI calculations while the CPU manages the broader system.

Arm describes the processor as its first production-silicon product. Arm has designed and licensed processor intellectual property for decades, but the AGI CPU represents a move toward offering a complete Arm-designed chip that customers can deploy directly.

Why this changes Arm’s business

Arm’s traditional model is built around licensing CPU architecture and related intellectual property. Chip designers pay licensing fees and, in many cases, royalties when they sell products incorporating Arm technology. Arm also offers platforms such as Neoverse and Compute Subsystems that customers can use when developing their own processors.

The AGI CPU adds a different route: customers can adopt a finished Arm-designed processor rather than build every part of a server CPU themselves. That could make Arm more useful to infrastructure operators that want Arm performance and efficiency without undertaking a full custom-chip program.

It also creates a potential conflict. Some of Arm’s customers design and sell their own Arm-based server processors. In its filings, Arm acknowledges that its silicon products can put it in competition with existing licensees. The company nevertheless presents the AGI CPU as an additional product alongside, not a replacement for, its licensing, platform and royalty businesses. Arm’s filing and its risk disclosures are important context for investors assessing that tension.

Meta is more than a conventional customer

Meta is the most significant part of the announcement. It is the AGI CPU’s lead partner, co-developer and initial customer, rather than simply a buyer receiving a finished merchant chip.

Meta contributed infrastructure expertise and workload requirements to the design and plans to deploy the processor alongside its own MTIA AI accelerators. Meta has said the companies are working on multiple CPU generations for large-scale AI and general-purpose data-center workloads. It also plans to release board and rack designs through the Open Compute Project later in 2026.

The commercial distinction matters. “Meta is a customer” does not necessarily mean it is buying a standard retail processor through an ordinary procurement channel. The arrangement is a co-development and infrastructure-deployment relationship, and the companies have not publicly disclosed commercial terms.

Meta’s strategy is increasingly portfolio-based. Its infrastructure includes MTIA custom accelerators, Arm-based CPUs, AWS Graviton processors, and systems using NVIDIA and AMD technology. The Arm AGI CPU can therefore complement Meta’s custom silicon rather than replace it.

Meta explains its MTIA strategy here, while its broader infrastructure approach includes partnerships involving AWS Graviton.

Published specifications

Arm’s published materials describe several configurations and maximum specifications:

Specification Published detail
CPU cores Up to 136 Arm Neoverse V3 cores; 128-core and 64-core variants are also listed
Thermal design power Up to 300 watts
Memory Twelve DDR5 memory channels, with speeds up to 8,800 MT/s
Expansion PCIe Gen6, with supporting material specifying up to 96 lanes
System design Support for dense 1U systems
Density claim Arm says up to 8,160 cores per air-cooled rack and more than 45,000 cores per liquid-cooled rack

Arm’s product page and technical material cite approximately 6 to 6.3 GB/s of memory bandwidth per core, depending on the material, and a sub-100-nanosecond latency target. These are product specifications or targets, not independent performance results. See the launch announcement, the Red Hat technical overview and the official product page.

What Arm’s “more than 2× performance per rack” claim means

Arm says the AGI CPU can deliver more than twice the performance per rack of x86 platforms and links its density claims to potential data-center capital-expenditure savings of up to $10 billion per gigawatt.

Those figures should be treated as Arm estimates, not universal benchmarks. The public material does not establish a fully independent comparison against a specified Intel or AMD configuration. A meaningful evaluation would need to identify:

  • the exact x86 processors used as the baseline;
  • the workload and software stack;
  • whether performance means throughput, latency, power efficiency, total cost or a composite measure;
  • whether accelerators, memory, networking and storage are included; and
  • whether the comparison concerns CPU-only systems or complete CPU-plus-accelerator racks.

A rack-level advantage does not mean the CPU is universally twice as fast. AI infrastructure performance depends on memory, networking, cooling, storage, software and accelerators as well as the processor. The relevant comparison for buyers is the cost and output of the complete system.

When will the chip be available?

The key dates are:

  • March 24, 2026: Arm announced the AGI CPU.
  • By the end of calendar 2026: Arm expects production.
  • Second half of 2026: Arm and hardware partners have been working toward deployments, but availability and volumes can differ by customer and system vendor.

Announcement, sampling, production and broad commercial shipment are different milestones. The available company filing supports production by the end of 2026; it does not by itself establish broad volume shipments or a public list price. The Arm filing is the clearest source for the production qualification.

Who else is involved?

Arm has identified a wider ecosystem that includes Meta, OpenAI, Cerebras, Cloudflare, F5, Positron, Rebellions, SAP, SK Telecom, Verda, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, Supermicro, Lenovo, Quanta and ASRock Rack.

These organizations do not necessarily have the same relationship with Arm. They may be deployment partners, cloud providers, system vendors, design partners or broader ecosystem participants. It would be inaccurate to describe every named company as a confirmed purchaser.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and Supermicro have been separately associated with the platform, while Arm’s broader filing lists the wider ecosystem.

How the processor fits against alternatives

Existing x86 servers

Intel and AMD server platforms retain advantages in software compatibility, established procurement and operational familiarity. Arm’s opportunity is strongest where high CPU density, memory bandwidth, power efficiency and AI-oriented system design matter more than legacy compatibility.

Custom Arm CPUs

AWS Graviton and other custom Arm processors give large infrastructure operators control over their own designs. The AGI CPU could appeal to organizations that want Arm-based infrastructure without investing the time and engineering resources required to develop a server CPU internally.

GPUs and AI accelerators

The AGI CPU is not a substitute for NVIDIA or AMD AI accelerators, nor for Meta’s MTIA silicon. It is closer to a high-density host and orchestration processor for AI infrastructure. The strongest systems may combine CPUs and accelerators rather than select one category exclusively.

The main commercial risks

  • Channel conflict: Arm may compete with licensees that previously represented its route into the server market.
  • Execution: Production timing, manufacturing coordination, system validation and supply volume will determine whether the announcement becomes a meaningful business.
  • Software support: Firmware, operating systems, compilers, containers and application compatibility can matter as much as core counts.
  • System economics: Buyers optimize complete racks, not isolated CPUs. Cooling, memory, networking and accelerators can change the economics.
  • Customer concentration: Meta’s involvement is strategically important, but it does not guarantee that other hyperscalers will adopt the product at scale.
  • Revenue conversion: Reported demand or commitments are not the same as purchase orders, production volume or recognized revenue.

Arm has reported more than $2 billion across fiscal 2027 and fiscal 2028 in later company materials, but that figure should be interpreted using the company’s own definitions. It should not automatically be treated as booked revenue or guaranteed shipments. Arm’s filing provides the relevant disclosure.

What investors and infrastructure buyers should watch

  1. End-of-2026 production: Whether Arm meets its stated timing and at what volume.
  2. Meta deployment details: The scale, workloads and rack designs Meta actually uses.
  3. Independent benchmarks: Results that disclose the baseline, workload, software and full-system configuration.
  4. System availability: Pricing, delivery schedules and support from OEMs and cloud providers.
  5. Licensee reaction: Whether Arm’s existing partners continue licensing its technology while competing with the finished product.
  6. Financial conversion: Evidence that ecosystem interest becomes orders, shipments and revenue.

The commercial opportunity is real, but the investment case depends on execution. Arm has moved beyond a purely licensing-based headline; it still has to prove that a finished processor can scale without undermining the customer relationships that built its core business.
