Snapdragon X launched despite Arm’s legal challenge, and Qualcomm later won the central Nuvia-related case. The dispute did not establish that Snapdragon X PCs were illegal or require their shutdown. It was a fight over licensing contracts: whether Qualcomm could use technology developed under Nuvia’s separate Arm license after acquiring Nuvia, or whether Qualcomm’s own Arm agreements covered the resulting custom Oryon CPU. Arm appealed the final judgment, and separate litigation meant the wider commercial relationship was not necessarily settled.
The dispute in brief
Arm licenses CPU technology; Qualcomm designs Snapdragon processors using Arm-compatible technology. Qualcomm acquired CPU-design startup Nuvia in 2021 and used Nuvia’s technology and engineers in developing Oryon, the custom CPU at the heart of the Snapdragon X PC platform.
Nuvia had its own Architecture License Agreement (ALA) with Arm. Arm argued that Nuvia could not transfer or assign that agreement to Qualcomm without consent and that Qualcomm could not simply use Nuvia-derived work under its own separate licenses. Qualcomm said its existing agreements with Arm covered its custom CPU cores and products, including work developed after the acquisition.

It concerned the rights and obligations in particular agreements and the use of technology developed under Nuvia’s license.

Why Nuvia mattered to Snapdragon X
Oryon is a Qualcomm-designed CPU microarchitecture compatible with the Arm instruction-set environment. “Custom” does not mean independent of Arm: the dispute was over contractual rights to develop and use the design, not a claim that Oryon had no relationship to Arm technology.
Qualcomm made Oryon the CPU foundation of Snapdragon X, its return to high-performance Windows PCs. The Snapdragon X Elite platform, for example, is listed by Qualcomm with a 12-core Oryon CPU, integrated Adreno graphics and a Hexagon NPU rated up to 45 TOPS. Specifications vary by chip and laptop, and a laptop’s performance also depends on cooling, memory, firmware and power settings. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite specifications are platform-level claims, not a guarantee that every laptop configuration performs identically.
What each company argued
Arm said it terminated Nuvia’s ALA in March 2022 after Nuvia did not obtain consent for its assignment to Qualcomm. Arm’s claims included alleged breaches of termination obligations and disputes about whether Nuvia-derived technology could be used in Qualcomm products under Qualcomm’s separate agreements. Arm’s court filing sets out its account of the license and termination.

Qualcomm argued that its own Arm Architecture License Agreement and Technology License Agreement covered its architected cores and products. It maintained that the Nuvia acquisition did not cancel Qualcomm’s independent rights. Qualcomm also brought separate claims alleging Arm had breached agreements involving matters such as technical deliverables and licensing terms. These were distinct legal issues, not all resolved by the Nuvia jury trial.
Why the timing threatened the launch
When the dispute arose, Qualcomm was preparing to make Oryon the centerpiece of Snapdragon X and a broader Windows-on-Arm push. A court ruling against Qualcomm could have created uncertainty for laptop makers, raised the prospect of renegotiated licensing terms, or forced costly design changes if Qualcomm had been required to stop using disputed technology. Even without an injunction, uncertainty could have made OEMs and enterprise customers cautious about committing to a new platform.
Those were risks, not proof that Snapdragon X was about to be canceled. The platform launched, laptop makers sold Snapdragon X systems, and Qualcomm’s product catalog later expanded to include Snapdragon X2 products. The lawsuit did not itself prevent the launch.

What happened in court
- 2021: Qualcomm acquired Nuvia, bringing its CPU technology and personnel into Qualcomm.
- March 2022: Arm said it terminated Nuvia’s ALA after objecting to its assignment.
- August 2022: Arm sued Qualcomm and Nuvia in Delaware.
- April 18, 2024: Qualcomm filed a separate action against Arm.
- December 16–20, 2024: The central Nuvia dispute went to trial. Qualcomm’s filings say the jury found that Qualcomm had not breached the Nuvia ALA and that the relevant use was licensed under Qualcomm’s own agreement.
- September 30, 2025: The court entered final judgment for Qualcomm and Nuvia, dismissing Arm’s remaining claim, according to the companies’ filings.
- October 1, 2025: Arm filed a notice of appeal to the Third Circuit, according to Qualcomm’s 2025 Form 10-K.
The judgment is a significant win for Qualcomm in the central Nuvia-related case. It should not be confused with every other Arm–Qualcomm proceeding. An earlier judgment and appeal mentioned in company filings concerned separate procedural matters, and Qualcomm’s separate claims against Arm were not the same case as the Nuvia jury trial.
What remains unresolved
Qualcomm’s separate action raised other contractual and commercial issues. Company filings described a trial schedule in 2026, but the available record does not establish a definitive final outcome for that separate proceeding. Likewise, Arm’s appeal means the central judgment was not necessarily the last word in the appellate process. The exact status of each case can change, so the September 2025 judgment should not be represented as resolving every disagreement between the companies.
The dispute also illustrates commercial dependence beyond a single chip. Arm remains central to the architecture ecosystem, while Qualcomm is using Oryon across an expanding family of products. A favorable ruling on specific claims does not by itself establish that every future Oryon product is covered by every agreement or eliminate the possibility of future licensing disputes.

What this means if you are buying a Snapdragon X laptop
For a buyer, the lawsuit is not a strong standalone reason to avoid an existing Snapdragon X PC. The central Nuvia judgment favored Qualcomm, and the case did not order a consumer recall or make laptop owners parties to the dispute. The more immediate question is whether the laptop works well with the software and devices you rely on.
Check software and driver compatibility
- Confirm that essential applications have native Arm64 versions or run acceptably under Windows emulation.
- Check specialized hardware and its drivers, including printers, scanners, audio interfaces and scientific or industrial equipment.
- Ask your organization’s IT team about VPN, endpoint-security, virtualization and device-management support.
- For games, verify the specific title, graphics drivers and anti-cheat compatibility rather than assuming that Windows compatibility guarantees it will run.
- If Linux is central to your work, check current support for the exact laptop and platform. Qualcomm says Linux enablement is evolving and points users to WSL2 on Windows 11 for a more seamless experience. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X FAQ describes that qualification.
Assess the actual laptop, not just the processor family
Battery life, noise and performance vary with screen type and size, battery capacity, cooling, memory, brightness, modem use, background tasks and power settings. Treat vendor battery and benchmark figures as configuration- and test-dependent, not as guaranteed results for every model. Compare the specific laptop’s ports, display, memory, warranty and return policy alongside its processor.
Snapdragon X can be worth considering if you prioritize an efficient thin-and-light Windows laptop and mainly use compatible productivity, browser and communication apps. Intel or AMD may be a safer fit when legacy Windows software, broad peripheral support, gaming or x86-specific development is essential. A MacBook may suit buyers who do not need Windows-only software and are comfortable with macOS. Compare complete systems at comparable prices and configurations rather than choosing on brand or architecture alone.
For an organization, a compatibility pilot is more prudent than a fleet-wide purchase based solely on processor specifications or the outcome of this lawsuit. For an individual buyer, test critical apps and peripherals during the return window.
The takeaway
Arm’s challenge put Qualcomm’s use of Nuvia-derived technology—and therefore the legal foundation of its custom-PC CPU strategy—under scrutiny as Snapdragon X approached launch. The launch went ahead, and Qualcomm won the central Nuvia-related case in the trial court. Arm appealed, while separate claims remained distinct. For buyers, that history is useful context, but software, drivers and the merits of the specific laptop are usually the more practical decision points.
